A developer-era figure put Minecraft at about 80,000 lines around 2011. Later community measurements of decompiled Minecraft: Java Edition builds range into the several-hundred-thousand-line order of magnitude, including one rough estimate of 450,000–500,000 lines. Those figures are not directly comparable, and they say nothing reliable about Bedrock’s separate C++ codebase.
Why Minecraft does not have one exact number
“Minecraft” describes multiple editions, releases and products rather than one source tree. Java Edition and Bedrock are the most important distinction for this question: Java Edition is the Java-based PC edition, while Bedrock uses a separate C++ codebase, according to Microsoft’s franchise fact sheet (Microsoft’s Minecraft Franchise Fact Sheet).
A count also changes depending on whether it includes the client, server, shared classes, third-party libraries, comments, blank lines, generated files, tests, build tools, launcher code, resource data or platform-specific components. “Lines of code” is therefore a measurement definition, not a single standardized property of the game.
The strongest published figures

The most defensible summary for modern Java Edition is therefore “several hundred thousand lines of decompiled source,” not a precise official total.

What the 80,000-line figure means
The approximately 80,000-line number belongs to the development era around 2011. It is useful because it is a contemporary developer-era figure, but Minecraft has had more than a decade of updates, refactoring, new systems and platform changes since then. Treating it as today’s count is incorrect.
Why Java Edition estimates come from decompiled code
For much of Java Edition’s history, the distributed game was obfuscated. Modders reconstructed readable source-like files by decompiling bytecode and applying mappings. Mojang describes that history and its later move away from obfuscation in its obfuscation announcement.

Generated source is not identical to Mojang’s original source. A decompiler can choose different formatting, reconstruct compiler-generated structures, omit original comments and use different mappings or file organization. Two tools can therefore count different numbers from the same game build without either result being “the” official count.
Mojang has open-sourced selected standalone libraries, including the Brigadier command parser, but that is not the same as publishing the complete Minecraft client and server source code. The scope is explained in Mojang’s library announcement.

Java Edition and Bedrock cannot be added together
Java Edition
Java Edition has a publicly inspectable decompilation workflow, so researchers can produce version-specific estimates. Those estimates must identify the exact release, client/server scope, mappings, decompiler and counting rule.
Bedrock
Bedrock is implemented in a separate C++ codebase. No reliable public total for its source lines is established in the available evidence. A Java Edition estimate cannot be used as a Bedrock estimate, and adding the two would mix different codebases and counting methods.

Other Minecraft products
Education Edition, China Edition, legacy console editions and spin-offs such as Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Legends are separate products or branches. A number for Java Edition is not a line count for the Minecraft franchise.
How to measure a specific Java Edition version
You can make a reproducible local measurement, provided you describe it as lines in generated/decompiled source rather than Mojang’s official source count.

- Choose the target. Record the exact Java Edition version, and decide whether you want client, server or merged output.
- Generate the source locally. The MinecraftSourcesGenerator project documents downloading the relevant client and server JARs, applying mappings when needed, decompiling with Vineflower and filtering to Minecraft classes. Its example commands include:

Exclude bundled third-party libraries if your aim is Mojang’s Minecraft classes. The project’s merged output gives precedence to client classes when client and server files conflict, which is one methodological choice rather than a canonical total.
- Count the generated files. For a physical-line count on Linux or macOS:

Get-ChildItem -Recurse -Filter *.java sources<version> | Get-Content | Measure-Object -Line - Report the rules. State whether blank lines and comments are included, which decompiler and mappings were used, whether generated code is present, and the measurement date. For non-comment source lines, use a source-code measurement tool instead of
wc -l, which counts blanks and comments.
The tooling documentation says generated sources should remain local under the applicable EULA. Do not publish or redistribute a complete decompiled source tree. The Minecraft Wiki’s code-inspection guide provides additional local-inspection context.

- Edition: Java and Bedrock are different implementations.
- Version: code is added, removed, refactored and replaced; growth is not a simple cumulative total.
- Scope: client-only, server-only and merged trees produce different results.
- Package filters: counting only
net.minecraftis not counting every file in a distribution. - Libraries and tools: third-party dependencies, launchers, tests and build scripts may or may not be included.
- Counting rule: physical lines, nonblank lines, non-comment lines and executable statements are different measurements.
- Decompilation: mappings, formatting and reconstructed compiler structures change the generated line count.
- Assets are not source: JAR size and installation size include bytecode, native binaries, translations, metadata, shaders and data files, none of which converts cleanly into source lines.
Does a larger line count mean a better or more complex game?
Not by itself. Line count is a weak proxy for software complexity or engineering effort. Generated or repetitive code can inflate it; data-driven systems can move content out of code; concise abstractions can hide substantial behavior. Architecture, tooling, reuse, testing, performance constraints and maintainability are more informative than a raw total.
The defensible answer
If you need one sentence, use this: Minecraft has no official current line count; a historical figure reported about 80,000 lines around 2011, while modern community measurements of decompiled Java Edition builds suggest several hundred thousand lines. Bedrock is a separate C++ codebase with no publicly verified comparable total. Claims such as “Minecraft has four billion lines of code” have no credible support in the cited evidence.
