Steam error E84 means Steam has temporarily rate-limited authentication requests. It commonly appears after repeated sign-in, password-reset, Steam Guard, or QR-login attempts, but it can also involve a shared or changing IP address, a VPN, local security software, or a temporary Steam-side problem. It is not, by itself, proof of a ban, a hacked account, or a wrong password.
Stop trying to sign in for now. Exit Steam, stop password-reset and verification requests, disable any VPN or proxy for the next test, wait several hours, then make one deliberate login attempt. Valve does not publish a universal E84 cooldown.
What Steam error E84 means
Steamworks identifies result 84 as k_EResultRateLimitExceeded, a temporary rate limit. It is distinct from Steam’s separate permanent-limit result. The documentation is the authoritative explanation of the code, but it does not state the exact number of attempts that triggers E84 or a fixed waiting period: Steamworks result-code documentation.
Typical triggers include repeated failed sign-ins, multiple password-reset requests, repeated Steam Guard or QR approvals, several devices retrying at once, and network traffic coming from a shared, changing, or suspicious-looking IP address. A VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus filter, or temporary Steam authentication problem can contribute. These are possible causes, not a guaranteed diagnosis for every E84 message.

The safest first fix
- Exit Steam completely. Closing the window may leave Steam running in the background; use the client’s exit command and confirm it is no longer active.
- Stop all authentication activity. Do not click Try Again, request another password reset, scan another QR code, or ask repeatedly for Steam Guard codes.
- Close other Steam sessions. Quit Steam on other computers and phones, and close third-party applications that may be retrying authentication.
- Disable a VPN or proxy temporarily. Use your normal trusted connection for the next test.
- Wait before trying again. Steam gives no universal E84 timer. If the service or your ISP is having trouble, its sign-in guidance says waiting several hours may be necessary: Steam sign-in troubleshooting.
- Retry once through the official Steam client or website. If E84 returns, stop rather than starting another cycle of attempts.
Find out whether the account or the client is failing
After the no-attempt waiting period, test the account in a browser at store.steampowered.com or help.steampowered.com. You can also test the official mobile app. Interpret the results as follows:

Steam notes that the desktop client reaches an account differently from a browser, so a successful web login does not completely rule out a client-specific problem. Its network FAQ is available at Steam network-connectivity troubleshooting.
If the browser works but the Steam client still shows E84
- Restart Windows, macOS, or Linux, then launch Steam once.
- Check that firewall and antivirus software are not blocking Steam. Temporarily pause one suspected filter only for diagnosis, then restore it.
- Close VPNs, proxies, traffic filters, download managers, overlays, hardware-monitoring tools, and similar software that injects into or monitors applications.
- Update Steam using its official installer. Reinstall only after the simpler checks; preserve your game-library folders and do not delete personal data unnecessarily.
Steam lists potentially interfering software categories in its official FAQ: software that can interfere with Steam.
If the login window is blank, frozen, or accompanied by steamwebhelper errors, use the separate webhelper guidance: Steamwebhelper troubleshooting. That advice, including graphics-acceleration checks, applies to a broken interface—not to a normal rate-limit message by itself.
Password resets and Steam Guard
Do not change the password merely because E84 appeared. If you genuinely forgot it, wait until you have stopped triggering the limit, then use Steam’s official recovery flow once. A reset can invalidate sessions and require a new Steam Guard check.
- Use the newest mobile or email code; older codes may no longer work.
- Mobile authenticator codes change every 30 seconds, so enter the current code promptly.
- Check spam and filtered folders for Steam messages. Steam recommends allowing
[email protected]and[email protected]. - If a verification email has not arrived after three hours, Steam says to contact support; three hours is guidance, not a guaranteed delivery deadline.
- During QR login, a new-device sign-in, a reinstall, or a post-password-change login, wait instead of requesting repeated approvals.

Check for maintenance or a wider Steam outage
Open the Store, Community, and account pages in a browser. If several Steam services are unavailable, ask whether other users are reporting authentication failures and try again later. Third-party outage trackers can indicate a pattern but are not Valve’s official status confirmation. Steam itself lists maintenance, ISP problems, local-network configuration, and conflicting software among possible causes of client connection failures: official sign-in help.
When to contact Steam Support
Use the official recovery and support flow if E84 continues after a long period with no attempts, if browser, mobile, and client access all fail, if recovery mail never arrives, or if you have lost the email address or Steam Guard device. Contact support immediately when you see unexpected password, email, or device-authorisation changes.

Protect yourself from fake support
Steam Support will not fix E84 through Discord, Steam Chat, Telegram, or unsolicited direct messages. Never give a stranger your password, Steam Guard code, recovery code, payment details, or Steam Guard files, and never install a purported “E84 fixer.” Use only these official domains: steampowered.com, store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com, and help.steampowered.com.
If you suspect compromise, secure the email account first, change passwords from official Steam pages, review authorised devices, remove anything unfamiliar, and scan the computer for malware. Steam’s security guidance is at Steam account-security information.

Practical decision guide
- E84 followed many failed attempts: treat it as a temporary throttle; stop and wait.
- E84 followed a password change: wait, then sign in once with the new password and expect Steam Guard.
- E84 only on one network: investigate that network, VPN, proxy, router, or ISP.
- E84 with a broken login window: add webhelper and software-conflict troubleshooting.
- E84 for days across devices and networks: stop experimenting and contact Steam Support with evidence.
