Resident Evil Requiem Review

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resident Evil Requiem is worth playing if you want a single-player Resident Evil that alternates between vulnerable, puzzle-led horror and more forceful action. Grace Ashcroft and Leon S. Kennedy are deliberately different protagonists, and that contrast shapes the game’s pacing more than any single combat system. Professional reviews describe a compact, tightly paced campaign, although the balance between fear and firepower will depend on which character’s sections you prefer.

What is Resident Evil Requiem?

Capcom describes Resident Evil Requiem as the ninth mainline Resident Evil game and a survival-horror title built with the RE ENGINE. It launched on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

It is a single-player campaign centered on two leads: Grace Ashcroft, an FBI analyst, and Leon S. Kennedy, a veteran agent. The PlayStation Store presents their journeys as differing gameplay styles, while PC Gamer characterizes Leon’s chapters as action-led and Grace’s early chapters as more focused on stealth, horror and puzzles. That is a description of the structure, not a measured percentage of the campaign.

Capcom reported more than five million copies sold worldwide in an announcement dated March 4, 2026. The same announcement put total Resident Evil franchise sales above 183 million units as of December 31, 2025; those are dated publisher milestones rather than live sales totals.

How Grace and Leon change the game

Grace Ashcroft: vulnerability, stealth and investigation

Grace’s side of the campaign supplies the more traditional survival-horror pressure. PC Gamer’s review emphasizes stealth, puzzles and horror in her early sections, where limited agency and uncertainty make rooms feel threatening. The appeal is not simply enemy strength: it is the need to read spaces, solve problems and decide when avoiding danger is wiser than confronting it.

Leon S. Kennedy: combat confidence and forward momentum

Leon brings the action-led counterpoint. His experience and combat role make encounters feel more assertive, giving the campaign room to accelerate after Grace’s slower, more vulnerable sequences. The contrast is a central design idea rather than a choice between two separate campaigns.

This split also explains why reactions can differ. Players seeking the tension of older, less powerful protagonists may prefer Grace, while those wanting Leon’s combat momentum may find his chapters the more immediately satisfying.

Horror, stealth, puzzles and action

Requiem’s strongest structural feature is its movement between those four modes instead of treating survival horror as uninterrupted shooting. Grace’s sections use stealth and puzzles to delay confrontation and make exploration meaningful. Leon’s sections provide a release through combat and a clearer sense of offensive control.

GamesRadar+’s review discusses how familiarity with enemy locations and puzzle solutions can soften later horror runs. That observation matters for replay: the first run’s uncertainty is part of the fear, while subsequent runs can become more route- and combat-focused. It does not mean every scare disappears, but it does mean the game’s tension is partly knowledge-dependent.

First-person or third-person?

Capcom officially supports switching between first-person and third-person perspectives in real time. Multiple difficulty settings are also available, with Capcom presenting the range as suitable for new and experienced players.

The official feature description establishes availability, not identical results in every room or encounter. Perspective can change how close the camera feels to environmental details, how readable a threat is and how directly movement communicates your character’s position. Choose the view that best fits your tolerance for intimacy and spatial awareness, then switch when the other perspective better serves exploration or combat.

Is Resident Evil Requiem scary?

It is best understood as a variable-tension horror game rather than a nonstop jump-scare ride. Grace’s stealth, puzzles and reduced combat confidence create the most obvious vulnerability. Leon’s action sections trade some of that helplessness for weapons and momentum.

Because the campaign alternates between the two, the emotional rhythm changes by design. If you want every chapter to maintain the same level of dread, that variation may feel uneven. If you value a horror game that can build pressure, release it through action and then return to investigation, the contrast is one of Requiem’s main attractions.

Replay value and pacing

PC Gamer describes the experience as compact and tightly paced, rather than an oversized campaign padded with repetition. GamesRadar+ notes that repeat play can become less frightening once enemy positions and puzzle answers are known. Together, those observations suggest a game whose first run prioritizes controlled escalation, while later runs reward memory and cleaner execution.

Do not treat any reviewer’s playtime or pacing description as a universal completion-time promise. Your chosen difficulty, exploration and willingness to replay stealth sections will affect the experience. The most credible reason to return is not a wholly different story path established by the available reviews; it is trying another perspective, difficulty or route through spaces whose threats and solutions you now understand.

Who should play it?

Choose Requiem if you want

  • A single-player Resident Evil built around two contrasting protagonists.
  • Stealth, puzzles and investigation alongside more conventional action.
  • The option to use first-person or third-person perspective and select a difficulty level.
  • A relatively focused campaign whose tension changes as you learn its spaces.

Consider your expectations carefully if you want

  • Unbroken survival-horror vulnerability with little combat relief.
  • A campaign whose scares remain equally effective after you know enemy locations and puzzle solutions.
  • A platform recommendation based on verified frame-rate, resolution or control testing; the available reviews do not establish a complete cross-platform ranking.

Verdict

Resident Evil Requiem is a deliberately split survival-horror experience. Grace supplies the stealth, puzzle-solving and vulnerability; Leon supplies action and combat confidence. Capcom’s perspective switching and difficulty options make the presentation more flexible, while the reviewed campaign’s compact pacing keeps the contrast moving. It is a strong fit for players who want Resident Evil to shift between fear and force, but less certain for anyone seeking one unchanging horror mood or a thoroughly documented platform-performance comparison.
