Start by updating Windows and MCC, repairing the installation, then launch once with Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) disabled. If that works, restore unmodified files and relaunch the normal EAC-enabled version; disabled mode cannot use public matchmaking.
Quick fix
- Close MCC and Steam or the Xbox app completely, restart Windows, and install pending Windows and MCC updates.
- Verify or repair the game files using the storefront instructions below.
- Launch MCC once with EAC disabled. If it works, investigate modified files, injectors, or EAC initialization.
- Remove or restore mods and custom DLLs, then verify the installation again.
- Exit MCC fully and choose the normal Play Halo: The Master Chief Collection option.
Check the live MCC known-issues page before reinstalling. Its documented snapshot identifies build 1.3528.0.0 on February 26, 2026, but the list can change.

Identify when MCC crashes
Note the exact wording and stage: before the menu, at the Xbox or Microsoft logo, at “Press Enter,” during sign-in, after installing a mod, while entering matchmaking, or only on Steam Deck. These symptoms can have different causes.
Verify or repair the installation
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Halo: The Master Chief Collection and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files, wait for it to finish, and relaunch MCC with EAC enabled.
Xbox app or Microsoft Store
- Open the Xbox app and find MCC.
- Open the three-dot menu, choose Manage, then open Files.
- Select Verify and Repair, confirm the warning, and wait until the button returns to Play.

Test Easy Anti-Cheat
Steam
- In Steam, select MCC and click Play.
- Choose Play Halo: MCC Anti-Cheat Disabled (Mods and Limited Services).
Xbox app or Microsoft Store
- Search Windows for MCC.
- Choose Halo: MCC Anti-Cheat Disabled (Mods and Limited Services).
If disabled mode crashes too, EAC is less likely to be the sole cause. If it launches, close the game and restore original files before testing normal mode. EAC-disabled mode may support campaign, custom games, or modified content, but public matchmaking is unavailable.
Restore unmodified files and remove mods
Temporarily remove or move ReShade files, trainers, injectors, custom DLLs, overlays, and other third-party modifications. Back up legitimate mod work first. Do not delete random installation files. After restoring the original installation, run Steam verification or Xbox Verify and Repair, then launch with EAC enabled.
Update Windows for UE4 Critical Error
For the documented UE4 Critical Error, Halo Support advises updating Windows. Open Settings → Windows Update, install pending updates, restart the PC, update MCC, and test again. This is not proof that every fatal error is caused by Windows.
Reset local MCC data carefully
A successful file check does not repair damaged settings or stale preview data. Close MCC, back up the local folder, and rename it rather than deleting it. For former MCC flight participants, Halo identifies C:Users<UserName>AppDataLocalLowMCC as a possible source of leftover files. Rename it to MCC-backup, relaunch, and let MCC create fresh data. Expect graphics, controls, and accessibility preferences to reset.

Symptom-specific fixes
Steam sign-in crash
The known-issues list documents a crash when signing into MCC through Steam while the same profile is already signed in on an Xbox console. Sign out of that profile on the console, close MCC and Steam completely, restart Steam, and try again. This is a documented account-state issue, not necessarily damaged files.
NVIDIA crash during matchmaking
If campaign and custom games work but matchmaking crashes, do not begin with a reinstall. Check the live known-issues page and record the GPU model, mode, map, loading stage, and time. Submit those details to Halo Support.
Windows Narrator or settings crash
Temporarily disable Narrator if the crash occurs while rapidly cycling settings tabs or changing controller layouts. Launch MCC, avoid those actions until stable, then re-enable Narrator to test.
Secondary-monitor crash
Older patch notes describe launch crashes when MCC points to an unplugged secondary display. Reconnect the former monitor if possible, make the intended display primary, and temporarily remove docks or adapters. If the game launches but windowed dual-monitor rendering is faulty, use fullscreen. Back up local settings before resetting display configuration. See the April 2021 patch notes.

exFAT drive
A July 20, 2023 patch fixed a documented PC launch crash on exFAT. Do not treat moving MCC to NTFS as a universal current fix; update the game first. Consider storage-format testing only for an unusual, old, or compatibility-layer installation. See the July 2023 update notes.
Steam Deck
Use Steam Deck-specific guidance, not Windows paths. Official notes say launch-option labels have at times behaved opposite to their wording; a current known issue may require selecting Anti-Cheat Disabled for matchmaking and the Custom Game Browser. Campaign co-op and Spartan Ops also have compatibility limits with PC or Xbox players, and input-restricted matchmaking may require preferred input set to Gamepad. Reinstall only if verification repeatedly fails, repair cannot complete, core files remain damaged, or EAC is missing or broken after normal repair. Reinstalling does not remove local settings, flight data, account state, or a current game bug. Steam and Microsoft Store versions can also conflict: Halo Support warns that uninstalling Steam MCC while the Microsoft Store version remains installed can remove the EAC client and make the Store version unplayable. Avoid unofficial downgrades.
If nothing works
Submit a Halo Support ticket with the storefront, MCC build, Windows version, GPU and driver, exact error text, crash stage, whether EAC-disabled mode works, recent mods or hardware changes, and (for matchmaking) the map, mode, and timestamp. This lets support distinguish a local installation problem from a documented regression.

Can I play MCC with EAC disabled?
You can use supported campaign, custom, or modified-content scenarios, but public matchmaking is unavailable until you relaunch the normal EAC-enabled version.
Does verifying files delete saves?
File verification repairs installed content; it does not normally remove saves. A local-data reset can restore settings, so back up the MCC folder first.
Should I move MCC from an exFAT drive?
Not as a universal fix. The documented exFAT launch crash was fixed in the July 20, 2023 update; update and repair first.
Does this fix work on Xbox console?
This guide targets Windows PC storefronts and Steam Deck. Xbox console has different repair and diagnostic steps.
