In February 2023, Malwarebytes reported that some sites promising a cracked PC copy instead pushed an activation-key survey or a Trojanized installer that installed adware. A separate report from Kaspersky described fake downloads delivering unwanted software and malware. These reports establish a specific campaign, not that every crack is infected.
What the Hogwarts Legacy crack reports found
Malwarebytes published its warning on February 16, 2023. One route led visitors seeking an activation key into a survey that could request personal information, such as a phone number, or simply fail to provide a key. That was a survey scam even if the visitor never ran a file. Malwarebytes’ report described a separate route involving a download named Hogwarts_Legacy_Setup.exe. Malwarebytes said the file acted as a Trojan dropper that installed adware; its reported detections included Trojan.Dropper and Adware.Agent.Generic.

The name of a file is not proof of what it contains. Malwarebytes also described changing redirects and behavior: a download could initially resemble a legitimate archive or utility before the chain delivered a malicious component. Kaspersky independently reported on February 6, 2023, that fake Hogwarts Legacy download sites were distributing unwanted software and malware, including adware and Trojans capable of silently collecting information. The sites and samples were not necessarily identical, so their payloads should not be treated as one uniform file. Kaspersky’s warning likewise concerns fake downloads.
What the different threats can do
- Adware displays or injects unwanted advertising, redirects searches, changes browser behavior, or brings in other unwanted components. It may be less destructive than ransomware, but its presence can indicate that an untrusted installer ran unauthorized code.
- A Trojan or dropper is disguised as legitimate software. A dropper’s job is to install or launch another payload, so the visible program may not be the full threat.
- An infostealer may collect passwords, browser data, cookies, cryptocurrency-wallet information, or session tokens.
- A RAT or backdoor can give an attacker remote access or persistent control.
Those categories are not interchangeable. The 2023 Hogwarts-specific reports described adware and Trojan behavior; they do not establish that every file in that campaign stole credentials or provided remote access. However, Malwarebytes reported in June 2026 on a separate, broader campaign using pirated and repacked PC games to distribute password-stealing malware, including information stealers and remote-access malware. Why fake crack downloads work
A highly anticipated or expensive game attracts people searching for free copies, and those searchers may already expect archives, redirects, cracks, and activation steps. That gives scammers room to imitate release pages, scatter fake download buttons, or tell users to disable antivirus protection. A survey or request for a phone number can monetize a visitor without delivering any game; a Trojanized installer can monetize a computer through advertising, theft, fraud, or resale of access.
The security issue is not simply that a copy is unofficial. A legitimate storefront and publisher provide a chain of trust that an unknown download page does not. An archive utility that looks familiar, a convincing page, or a filename containing the game title does not establish that the full download is trustworthy.
Is the official Hogwarts Legacy game infected?
The reports cited here do not support that claim. They describe deceptive third-party sites, fake downloads, and modified or malicious installers—not evidence that the official Hogwarts Legacy release distributes adware. Nor do they prove that every crack, repack, or unofficial copy is malicious. The defensible conclusion is narrower: some fake sites used the game’s name to push survey scams and Trojanized downloads.
Red flags on a crack or download page
- The page demands a phone number, survey completion, payment, or “human verification” before revealing a key.
- It offers several competing “Download” buttons or sends you through unrelated domains.
- The download is an executable when the page promised an archive, or its publisher name is generic or unrelated.
- The page or readme tells you to disable Defender, SmartScreen, or another antivirus, or to add an antivirus exclusion.
- It asks you to run a command, paste PowerShell, install a browser extension, or grant administrator access without a clear legitimate reason.
- After opening the file, you see unexpected ads, browser redirects, a changed search engine, or unfamiliar extensions.
Microsoft describes Windows protections against malware and potentially unwanted applications, including Defender Antivirus and, where supported and configured, Smart App Control and Edge’s Defender SmartScreen. If you only visited the site
If you only opened a page and did not download or run anything, close it and do not follow its prompts. A survey can still collect information even when no malware executes.
- Do not provide payment details, passwords, phone numbers, or verification codes. Do not call a number shown in a pop-up.
- If you allowed site notifications, remove that permission in your browser’s site settings.
- Check the browser’s download history. Delete suspicious files without opening them.
- If you did download a file, ran anything, or notice unusual browser behavior, scan the PC using the steps below.

How far to escalate depends on what happened. Running a file—especially with administrator access, while antivirus was disabled, or after adding an exclusion—warrants more care than merely seeing a download link. A clean-looking desktop or normal game launch does not prove that no unwanted component ran.
Contain the computer and scan it
- Contain active risk. If you see signs of account abuse, remote control, or ongoing suspicious activity, disconnect the PC from the internet. Do not use it to sign in to email, banking, work, cryptocurrency, or password-manager accounts.
- Use a separate clean device for account recovery. Avoid changing passwords on the potentially compromised computer, where they could be captured again.
- Remove unfamiliar software. On current Windows versions, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall software you do not recognize. Removing a visible app alone may not remove every component.
- Update Defender and scan. Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence, then run a Full scan with Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
- Escalate if needed. If unwanted software persists, run Microsoft Defender Offline. Microsoft also provides a way to submit suspicious files. Exact availability and controls can vary by Windows edition and device configuration. Follow Microsoft’s unwanted-software guidance.
Do not restore an antivirus exclusion or disable protection to make the crack run. A scan is an important response, but it cannot undo information already exposed or guarantee that a compromised system is clean.

Protect accounts and payment details
If you ran the installer, treat credentials and active sessions on that computer as potentially exposed, especially if you signed in while it was running. Malwarebytes has reported other game-related and fake-software campaigns targeting browser passwords, cookies, Steam tokens, Telegram logins, saved card data, and other stored information. That history is a reason to check account security—not proof that the Hogwarts-themed samples collected every type of data. - From a clean device, change the password for your primary email first, then gaming accounts such as Microsoft, Steam, or Epic Games, plus social, banking, payment, work, or school accounts used on the PC.
- Change reused passwords anywhere else they were used. If a password manager was open or accessible on the affected PC, secure that account too.
- Sign out other sessions and revoke active sessions or application tokens wherever the service allows it. Password changes do not necessarily invalidate every existing session or token.
- Enable multifactor authentication and watch for unexpected sign-ins, password-reset messages, or messages sent from your accounts.
- If you entered card details or see suspicious transactions, contact the bank or payment provider promptly. If you entered a phone number, be alert to follow-up calls and messages asking for codes or payment.
When a clean Windows reinstall is the safer choice
A clean reinstall is not automatically necessary after every suspicious download. It is the more reliable recovery option when you can no longer trust the operating system, particularly if several scanners keep detecting malware; redirects, unknown startup items, or unexplained remote access persist; security tools have been disabled or blocked; or the file ran with administrator rights and you cannot establish that the system is clean. Consider it especially seriously if the PC holds sensitive personal, financial, school, or work information, or accounts keep being compromised after password resets.
What if antivirus flags a crack as a false positive?
Crack files may modify executables or bypass licensing checks, behavior that can trigger heuristic detections. A detection alone does not identify a specific malware family, but uncertainty is not a reason to disable protection and execute the file. The safest option is to obtain the game through an official storefront. Anyone who genuinely needs to analyze a suspicious file should use an isolated research environment, not a personal PC containing active accounts or credentials.
