Yes—Heroic Games Launcher is generally safe to use when you download it from the official project or a trusted distribution channel. It is an open-source launcher for Epic, GOG, and Amazon Games, but that does not make every build or game launched through it safe. On Linux, the Flatpak can limit Heroic’s default access to your files; Wine and Proton are compatibility tools, not complete security barriers.
What Heroic Games Launcher does
Heroic is a free, open-source graphical launcher for games you own through Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon Games. It is available for Linux, Windows, and macOS, with Steam Deck support. It uses your existing store accounts and game entitlements; it is not a separate game store. On Linux, it can manage compatibility tools such as Wine and Proton to run some Windows games. The official site and the public project repository describe the project and its supported platforms.
Is Heroic malware or a scam?
The available primary-source evidence supports treating the official Heroic project as legitimate, not as malware or a scam. The project publishes its source code on GitHub, identifies itself as free and open source, and links its downloads from its official website. That makes the software more inspectable, but it does not independently verify every released binary, dependency, mirror, or update.
As checked on August 18, 2026, GitHub’s repository security page showed no published security advisories and no detected security policy. This is a point-in-time status, not proof that Heroic has no vulnerabilities or that it has undergone an independent security audit.

What happens to your store password and personal data?
Heroic’s FAQ says the launcher does not collect data from your computer or collect your username, password, or other personal information. Its described login flow sends you to the relevant store’s website; Heroic retains an authentication token to list, download, and launch games. Treat that token as sensitive: it represents an authenticated session even though it is not your password. These are the project’s own privacy statements, not the result of an independent audit.
The official site says anonymous analytics are off by default and that Heroic does not sell user data. For safer sign-in, use the login flow opened by the official application, check that the page is genuinely on the Epic, GOG, or Amazon domain before entering credentials, and enable multifactor authentication where available. Do not enter a store password into a third-party “fix” tool, unofficial launcher, or support link. A compromised device or malicious build can still put an account at risk.

Is the Linux Flatpak safer?
It can be, in a specific way: Flatpak is designed to limit an application’s default access to parts of the host filesystem and system. Heroic’s Linux guide documents the Flatpak route, and its Steam Deck guide recommends installing through Discover in Desktop Mode. This permission boundary can reduce what Heroic can reach by default, but it does not guarantee complete isolation or make every game safe.
The distinction matters when games run: Heroic may launch Windows software through Wine or Proton, which are compatibility technologies rather than hardened virtual machines. A game can interact with files that are visible inside its environment, and broad Flatpak permissions can expose more of the host. The Linux Flatpak’s containment should not be assumed for Heroic’s native Windows or macOS builds.

How to install Heroic from a trusted source
- Start at the project website: visit heroicgameslauncher.com and follow its platform download links instead of downloading an installer from an unfamiliar mirror.
- On Linux, consider the Flatpak: the documented application ID is
com.heroicgameslauncher.hgl. The project’s guide describes installing it through a software center; Flathub lists it at the Heroic application page. - On Steam Deck: switch to Desktop Mode, open Discover, search for Heroic Games Launcher, and install it. Use the project’s Steam Deck instructions for its permissions and setup steps.
- Keep the installation current: update Heroic through the same trusted channel you used to install it. Avoid modified builds and unofficial repacks.
How to keep Flatpak permissions narrow
A dedicated library folder, such as ~/Games/Heroic/, is easier to reason about than giving the launcher access to your entire home directory. Keep games there if it suits your setup. If Heroic needs another location—for example, an SD card, external drive, or separate partition—grant access only to the required directory. The Linux guide documents adding a specific path with flatpak override; for example:

flatpak override com.heroicgameslauncher.hgl --filesystem="/mnt/drive/My Games"You can manage access graphically with Flatseal: open it, select Heroic Games Launcher, find Filesystem, add the required directory, and restart Heroic. On KDE, including the Steam Deck desktop, use System Settings → Applications → Flatpak Permission Settings, select Heroic, then add the needed location under filesystem access. Grant read/write access only when required.

Giving Heroic access to the whole home directory or host filesystem is convenient, but it substantially reduces the value of the sandbox. Conversely, restricting access too aggressively can prevent games from seeing their installation directory, saving settings, or launching. If you need to undo a permission change, remove it in Flatseal or KDE’s Flatpak permission settings rather than copying a command from an uncertain example.

Heroic is a launcher, not a malware scanner. The risk depends in part on the game’s source and what it can access. An official installation from Epic, GOG, or Amazon is a better baseline than an executable from an unknown forum or file-sharing site, but storefront distribution is not the same as a security audit. Cracks, repacks, third-party installers, mods, trainers, patches, scripts, and bundled launchers add software whose provenance may be harder to establish.

Wine and Proton do not guarantee that Windows malware is contained. A malicious program may fail to run because it is incompatible, but that is not dependable protection. On Linux, the practical exposure also depends on the files available to the Wine prefix and the directories permitted to Heroic. On any platform, keep the operating system and launcher updated, and use caution with untrusted executables and add-ons.
What can go wrong when permissions are restricted?
A game failing to launch or save does not by itself indicate malware. A sandbox can block a legitimate game from reaching a library or save location it needs. Heroic’s issue reports document cases involving filesystem access, sideloaded applications, and temporary files: a filesystem restriction and game-save case, a sideloaded-app and document-portal path case, and a temporary-filesystem case.
- If a library on an external drive is missing, check whether Heroic has access to that specific mount or folder.
- If a sideloaded executable fails, check its path and required directory access before widening permissions.
- If saves or settings are not retained, confirm the game’s save location is accessible; back up saves before changing permissions, prefixes, or cloud-sync settings.
- If an installer uses an unexpected temporary location, investigate that behavior rather than granting unrestricted filesystem access by default.
These examples concern particular reported issues, not proof that every restricted installation will fail. Heroic’s FAQ also warns that some games may ban accounts when run on an unsupported operating system through Wine or Proton. That is a publisher-policy or compatibility risk, distinct from malware risk.
