What was rumored in October 2024?
Reports published around October 7, 2024 said Tencent and the Guillemot family were examining ways to stabilize Ubisoft and increase its value. A possible buyout was one scenario mentioned, but the reporting did not establish that a formal offer had been submitted or that negotiations had reached a definitive stage. Other possible structures could have included a transaction involving the Guillemot family’s control position, a larger Tencent investment, a restructuring, an asset-level deal or a take-private proposal.
The contemporaneous report and Ubisoft’s response are reproduced by HopZone. It should be read as reporting about possibilities, not proof that “Tencent is buying Ubisoft” was an agreed transaction.

Ubisoft issued a deliberately broad holding statement: it “regularly reviews all its strategic options in the interest of its stakeholders and will inform the market if and when appropriate.”

- “Regularly reviews” describes an ongoing corporate process, not a signed deal.
- “All its strategic options” does not identify Tencent, a bidder, a price or a transaction structure.
- “If and when appropriate” leaves open whether any announcement would follow.
That wording acknowledged that Ubisoft could consider major alternatives without confirming a buyout, a formal offer or completed negotiations.
Why Tencent was viewed as a plausible partner
Tencent already had a strategic relationship with Ubisoft before the rumor. Ubisoft’s shareholder materials describe Tencent as a minority strategic partner and record Tencent’s stake in Guillemot Brothers Limited. Ubisoft’s 2023 notice also said the expanded founder-related concert could increase its stake to as much as 29.9% of Ubisoft’s capital or voting rights, subject to the applicable arrangements. The relevant document is Ubisoft’s 2023 meeting brochure.
That background made Tencent a credible strategic or financial participant, but a minority investment or relationship with founder-related entities is not the same as control of Ubisoft Entertainment.

What happened after the rumor?
March 27, 2025: a subsidiary investment was announced
Ubisoft announced a binding agreement under which Tencent would invest €1.16 billion for an approximately 25% economic interest in a newly created subsidiary. Ubisoft said the subsidiary would be headquartered in France, initially be wholly owned by Ubisoft and remain exclusively controlled and consolidated by Ubisoft. Ubisoft said the structure was intended to strengthen its balance sheet, reduce consolidated net debt and support the long-term development and growth of those franchises. The terms were announced in Ubisoft’s March 27, 2025 press release.
November 21, 2025: the transaction closed
Ubisoft announced completion on November 21, 2025 and identified the subsidiary as Vantage Studios. Tencent became a minority investor while Ubisoft retained majority ownership, control and consolidation. The closing announcement is available in Ubisoft’s completion release.

What rights did Tencent receive?
The completed agreement gave Tencent customary protections for a minority investor, rather than unrestricted operational control. Ubisoft’s closing release describes:
- Minority-protection veto and specified consent rights, including over disposals of important subsidiary assets.
- A five-year lock-up on Tencent’s Vantage Studios securities, subject to stated exceptions.
- Transfer mechanisms including rights of first refusal, rights of first offer, tag-along rights and drag-along rights.
- Put and call arrangements that could apply if Ubisoft underwent a board-approved change of control.
These provisions can protect Tencent’s investment or affect a future change-of-control process, but they do not make Tencent the owner of Ubisoft or automatically give it day-to-day control of Vantage Studios.
What does Vantage Studios mean for the three franchises?
Ubisoft has described Vantage Studios as a separately structured business with dedicated leadership and a long-term focus on the three brands. The stated goals include faster development, more streamlined decisions and larger, longer-lived brand ecosystems. The structure does not establish that Tencent controls the creative direction of Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry or Rainbow Six. It gives Tencent an economic stake and negotiated protections while Ubisoft remains the controlling company.

No. The October 2024 statement did not confirm a buyout, and the transaction that eventually closed was not an acquisition of Ubisoft Entertainment. It was a minority investment in Vantage Studios, a Ubisoft-controlled subsidiary holding selected franchise operations.
The most accurate description is that the rumor about a possible broader transaction was followed by a substantial Tencent investment, but the completed deal was narrower than a takeover and left Ubisoft with majority ownership, control and consolidation.

What remains unknown about the 2024 reports?
The public materials cited here do not establish the valuation discussed in the rumor, whether Tencent submitted a formal offer for Ubisoft, whether the Guillemot family sought to take Ubisoft private, the exact share-price move on the day, or any confidential negotiations. Nor do they prove that the October rumor directly caused the Vantage Studios structure.
