The message usually means NVIDIA cannot find or apply an Optimal Playable Settings profile for the game—not necessarily that your GPU or installation is faulty. Start in the current NVIDIA App, update the game, launch it once, verify support, add the correct installation folder under Settings > Scan Locations, rescan, and update the driver. If NVIDIA has no profile for the title, manual tuning is the only solution.
Use NVIDIA App before troubleshooting GeForce Experience
NVIDIA is directing remaining GeForce Experience users to the NVIDIA App, which now provides driver updates, game optimization and graphics controls. Older GeForce Experience versions may not update automatically, and NVIDIA has warned that some legacy web services will eventually be switched off; no verified shutdown date is published. Download the current app from NVIDIA’s official NVIDIA App page.
Instructions that say Games > select a game tile > Optimize describe the legacy client, as shown in NVIDIA’s older GeForce Experience release notes. Labels and locations can differ in NVIDIA App.
What the error actually tells you
Optimization is a profile-based recommendation system. NVIDIA maintains settings for particular games and matches those recommendations to detected hardware, display and system configuration; it does not tune every Windows game automatically. NVIDIA describes the feature as a balance of image quality and performance, not a guarantee of maximum FPS. See its explanation of Optimal Playable Settings.

- Not detected: the app cannot see the installed game.
- Detected but unsupported: the title appears, but NVIDIA has no profile for it.
- Profile unavailable: the game is recognized, but the app cannot retrieve or apply its recommendations.
- Optimization applied, performance poor: the profile worked, but its compromise does not suit your resolution, laptop limits, mods, workload or preferences.
A game can work with the NVIDIA overlay and still lack an optimization profile. NVIDIA says profiles are supplied per game, primarily for widely played titles, rather than universally.
Follow this troubleshooting order
- Update the game. Use Steam, Epic, Xbox/Microsoft Store or the launcher that installed it. NVIDIA’s profile is intended for the latest official game version.
- Run the game once. Start it normally, wait for the main menu, let first-run setup or shader compilation finish, then quit through the game’s normal exit option. Many games create their graphics configuration only after this first launch.
- Open NVIDIA App and check the game list. Search for the title in its games or graphics area. If it is absent, continue with support and scan-location checks below.
- Confirm support. Check whether NVIDIA lists the title as supported. If no profile exists, no local reinstall, executable shortcut or registry edit can create one.
- Add the installation directory. In NVIDIA App open Settings > Scan Locations, add the folder containing the game installation, and start a rescan. Add the library folder—not merely a guessed executable path.
- Refresh the app. Reopen NVIDIA App or refresh its game list after scanning, then try the game again.
- Update the NVIDIA driver. Open the app’s Drivers page and install the current Game Ready or Studio driver appropriate to your use. NVIDIA recommends current drivers when optimization or resulting performance is problematic.
- Report a persistent profile error. Use NVIDIA App’s feedback control and include the game version, launcher, GPU, driver and the exact message.
NVIDIA’s official sequence is documented in its optimization-error support article and its missing-games guidance.
If the game is missing from NVIDIA App
First distinguish support from detection. A supported title installed on another internal drive, an external drive, a custom folder such as D:Games, an Epic library, or a second Steam library may simply be outside the app’s scan locations. Add the parent installation directory under Settings > Scan Locations and rescan.

Xbox/Microsoft Store installations can have different folder ownership and access rules from ordinary Steam or Epic folders. Portable copies, multiple launchers, mods and cloud-synchronized settings can also prevent a clean match. If the title remains absent after a correct scan and first launch, it may be unsupported or unavailable to the app rather than corrupted.

If the game is listed but Optimize is unavailable
Possible causes include a missing NVIDIA profile, a profile that has not caught up with a new game patch, configuration files that the app cannot match, or communication failure in the legacy GeForce Experience client. Updating, first-launch initialization and moving to NVIDIA App are the meaningful local checks. Adding a scan location only improves detection; it cannot manufacture an optimization profile.
When only one game fails, suspect title support, its patch or its configuration format. When every game fails, investigate the NVIDIA App/legacy-client transition, driver state and service communication rather than assuming every title is unsupported.

If optimization works but makes the game worse
Optimization targets NVIDIA’s balance, not your personal frame-rate target. Competitive players may prefer lower latency and higher FPS; visual-quality-focused players may accept lower FPS; laptop users may need settings that respect thermal and power limits. Mods, recording, streaming and CPU bottlenecks are not fully represented by a generic profile.
Before applying changes, note or screenshot the original settings. Use Revert if the current app offers it. If performance is still poor, NVIDIA recommends confirming the latest patch and driver and temporarily testing with third-party tools and background applications disabled. Its guidance is available at NVIDIA Support. Restore security software after any short diagnostic test.
Manual settings when no NVIDIA profile exists
You do not need an Optimize button to tune a game. Use an in-game benchmark where available and change one setting at a time:

- Set a frame-rate target that fits the monitor and workload.
- Reduce the most expensive effects first: ray tracing, reflections, volumetric effects, shadows, ambient occlusion, then crowd or foliage density.
- Keep texture quality as high as available VRAM permits; textures are not always the first useful cut.
- Measure FPS and frame time while watching GPU utilization, VRAM use and temperatures.
- Repeat tests after each change and keep the setting that meets the target without unnecessary image-quality loss.
NVIDIA’s graphics and performance guide illustrates the trade-offs among reflections, volumetric lighting, anti-aliasing and texture resolution. Its example gains are from Control, not universal results.
What not to try first
- Do not edit the Windows registry or delete random NVIDIA folders.
- Do not change DNS settings without evidence of a network-specific problem.
- Do not permanently disable Windows security or install unofficial configuration packs.
- Do not roll back a driver solely because one game has no profile.
- Do not assume manually adding an executable makes an unsupported game supported.
- Do not buy a new GPU until repeatable testing shows a hardware limit through utilization, VRAM, frame time or resolution scaling.
When there is no PC-side fix
NVIDIA cannot optimize a title it has not profiled, repair a broken game patch, fix corrupted game files or guarantee a particular FPS through this feature. After the ordered checks fail, report the title through NVIDIA App and use manual settings. That is a limitation of profile coverage, not proof that your GPU is defective.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does GeForce Experience say my game cannot be optimized?
The app cannot apply a supported NVIDIA profile. The game may be unsupported, not fully detected, uninitialized because it has never been launched, out of date, or affected by a profile-retrieval problem.

Does every Steam game support NVIDIA optimization?
No. Detection and optimization are separate; NVIDIA supplies profiles for selected titles, not every game.
Do I need to run a game before optimizing it?
Yes. Launch it to the main menu, finish first-run setup, exit normally, then retry so its configuration files exist.
Should I reinstall GeForce Experience?
Not as a first step. NVIDIA directs users toward NVIDIA App; update the game, initialize it, check support and scan locations, and update the driver first.
Can I optimize an unsupported game manually?
Yes. Set a frame-rate target and tune demanding effects such as ray tracing, reflections, volumetrics and shadows while monitoring frame time, VRAM and temperatures.
