Roblox does not have one universal error called a “runtime error.” The right fix depends on the exact message or code, whether the failure happens in Player or Studio, and whether Roblox fails to launch, join an experience, or connect on a particular network. Start by recording the message, then use the matching steps below rather than downloading a supposed error-fix tool.

Start with these quick checks

  1. Record what happened. Write down the exact wording or error number, whether it appeared at launch, login, or while joining, your device and operating-system version, and any recent Roblox, system, driver, antivirus, or router changes. Roblox’s connection troubleshooting guidance requests details about the problem and device when contacting support.
  2. Restart Roblox and the device. Close Roblox completely, restart the computer, phone, tablet, or Chromebook, then try again. Restarting is an initial step in Roblox’s desktop and Mac troubleshooting instructions.
  3. Close other game utilities. Exit overlays, auto-clickers, macro tools, emulators, alternate launchers, injectors, screen-monitoring utilities, and game boosters before starting Roblox again. These programs can interfere with the client or trigger anti-cheat messages.
  4. Try another experience. If only one experience fails, test a different one before changing your installation.
  5. Check Roblox’s error-code guide. Roblox documents distinct launch, connection, anti-cheat, and library errors; their fixes are not interchangeable. See the Roblox error-code reference.

First identify where the failure occurs

Player, Studio, or both?

Roblox Player is used to join and play experiences. Roblox Studio is used to create, test, and edit experiences, including Team Create work. If only Studio fails, note what you were doing in Studio and check its logs; Roblox Creator Hub documents Studio debugging and log locations at Studio debugging. Windows logs are under %LOCALAPPDATA%Robloxlogs; macOS logs are in the Roblox logs directory.

If Player and Studio both fail on the same device, a system, security-software, or operating-system issue becomes more plausible than a fault limited to one experience. That is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee.

One experience or every experience?

  • One experience fails: Its server, assets, or experience-specific behavior may be the issue. Reinstalling Roblox cannot repair a problem inside an individual experience.
  • Every experience fails on one device: Check the local client, device support, security software, and network.
  • The same account fails on multiple devices: The account, experience, or a Roblox-side issue may be involved. Test another experience and network before repeating a reinstall.

If Roblox opens and immediately closes

Check support and security software

Confirm that the device and operating system meet Roblox’s published requirements. As of September 29, 2026, Roblox lists 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, macOS 10.13 High Sierra or newer, and ChromeOS 53 or newer with the Google Play Store enabled. Linux is not supported. Roblox lists DirectX 10 or higher feature-level support for Windows graphics, and recommends at least 300 MB of Windows storage and 1 GB of memory. Its household internet recommendation is 4–8 Mbps minimum for a single-use household. These are published requirements or recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth performance; Roblox also cautions that new or prerelease operating systems may not be supported immediately. Check the current hardware and operating-system requirements if your setup is near a minimum.

Firewall or security software can block Roblox files or communication, but it is only one possible cause. Update the security software, check its quarantine and block history, and allow the legitimate Roblox installation through its controls. Roblox identifies the Windows client folder as C:Users<Your Windows Username>AppDataLocalRoblox. Restore a quarantined file only when the security product identifies it as a false positive. If you briefly disable protection for a test, turn it back on immediately afterward. See Roblox’s guidance on third-party applications and antivirus restrictions.

Try a clean reinstall or the other official installer

Roblox’s usual reinstall process does not always require uninstalling first. If the client still crashes, or a recent update or installation may have been interrupted, use a clean reinstall: uninstall Roblox, restart Windows, remove the remaining local Roblox folder, then install it again from Roblox’s website or Microsoft Store. For “Failed to load library,” Roblox recommends testing the other official installation channel: uninstall the Microsoft Store version and try the desktop version, or vice versa. This is a compatibility test, not an indication that one channel is always better. See Roblox’s reinstall instructions.

Use only the official Roblox website or official app stores. Roblox advises removing unofficial versions and reinstalling an official copy when addressing anti-cheat issues.

If the message says “Failed to load library” or names a missing DLL

This message can mean Roblox cannot access a required Windows system file because it is missing, damaged, outdated, or blocked. Roblox describes “Failed to load library” as a client-side issue, not a server fault. Follow this order, using the Roblox library-error guidance for the current steps.

1. Clean the Roblox installation

Uninstall Roblox, then in File Explorer enter %LOCALAPPDATA% in the address bar and delete the Roblox folder. Its full path is usually C:Users<Your Windows Username>AppDataLocalRoblox. Restart Windows and reinstall from Roblox’s official website or the Microsoft Store. Deleting this local folder can remove local client data and settings; it should not ordinarily remove Studio places saved elsewhere. Check that you are not deleting a project you manually saved inside that folder. Roblox’s uninstall instructions explain the folder removal.

2. Repair Windows component files

If a clean reinstall does not help and the error points to a Windows library or system file, open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator. Run the first command, wait for it to finish, then run the second:

Restart Windows afterward and test Roblox. Roblox says DISM may take about 10–20 minutes, though actual time varies with the computer and system condition.

3. Check Windows N or KN editions

If the missing-file message names a media component such as MFPlat.dll and your Windows edition is N or KN, install the Media Feature Pack: open Start > Settings > Apps > Optional features > Add a feature, search for Media Feature Pack, install it, then restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Update Windows and graphics drivers

Check Windows Update and obtain graphics-driver updates from the relevant manufacturer’s official support channel, such as Microsoft, NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Avoid generic driver-download sites. Outdated Windows files or graphics drivers can contribute to library-loading problems.

If you see Error 279, ID 17, or “Could Not Connect”

These messages point to a connection failure rather than a generic launch problem. Roblox says Error 279 generally occurs when the client and servers cannot establish a network connection. Try these checks in order, following Roblox’s Error 279 / ID 17 guidance and connection troubleshooting:

  1. Restart Roblox and the device.
  2. Try a different Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. If Roblox works there, the original router, internet provider, school or workplace network, or parental-control policy may be blocking it.
  3. Check firewall and security-software rules for Roblox. Router behavior and firewall settings are covered in Roblox’s firewall and router guidance.
  4. Reinstall Roblox if local files may be corrupted.
  5. If the error is limited to one network, ask its administrator or your internet provider to investigate.

Do not start by forwarding ports. Roblox says the client selects outgoing ports dynamically; its router documentation also mentions UDP ports 49152–65535 in a router-functionality context, not as a universal port-forwarding fix. Unnecessary router changes can create security or connectivity problems.

Clean reinstall on Windows

  1. Close Roblox and other open programs.
  2. Uninstall Roblox through Windows’ installed-app controls.
  3. Open File Explorer and enter %LOCALAPPDATA% in its address bar.
  4. Delete the Roblox folder if it remains. Check that you are in your own user profile and that you have not manually saved a project there.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install Roblox from the official Roblox website or Microsoft Store, then test before reinstalling optional overlays or utilities.

Advanced Command Prompt option: Roblox documents the following commands after uninstalling. Run them only if you understand the current directory and have confirmed Command Prompt is in the intended user profile:

Fixes for macOS

  1. Restart the Mac, then uninstall and reinstall Roblox using its official installation flow.
  2. To reset Roblox logs, press Command + Space, enter ~/Library/Logs/Roblox/, and delete the contents.
  3. Check that Roblox is in Applications. If the website launch fails, try opening the app from the Dock instead.
  4. If the problem persists, open ~/Library/Preferences and delete Roblox-related com preference files so the app can recreate its settings. Take care not to remove unrelated preference files.
  5. Check macOS Privacy & Security settings if macOS says the application is blocked.

Roblox lists macOS 10.13 High Sierra and newer, including Apple Silicon/M1 support. For details on logs, preferences, and launch alternatives, see Roblox Mac troubleshooting.

Fixes for Android, iPhone, Fire tablets, and Chromebook

  • Force-close Roblox and restart the device.
  • Install available Roblox and operating-system updates.
  • Check that automatic date and time are enabled.
  • Check available storage, then uninstall and reinstall Roblox from the official app store or, on Chromebook, the Play Store.
  • Test on another network if the message indicates a connection problem.
  • Do not install modified APKs or unofficial Roblox builds.

Roblox’s Error 279 guidance includes platform-specific reboot, force-close, reinstall, date-and-time, and network checks.

If Roblox says it was stopped or third-party software is interfering

Close overlays, emulators, injectors, macro tools, auto-clickers, and other game utilities. Remove unofficial Roblox versions and reinstall an official one if needed. Roblox’s anti-cheat guidance recommends identifying software conflicts; if the message persists, use a Windows clean boot as a temporary diagnostic:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R, enter msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Open Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
  3. Open the Startup tab and select the option to open Task Manager.
  4. Disable startup items in Task Manager, then restart Windows and test Roblox.
  5. Restore normal startup settings and re-enable services and startup items gradually, testing Roblox as you go to identify a conflict.

A clean boot is for diagnosis, not a permanent setup. If Roblox works only with a particular application disabled, check that application’s official support guidance or leave it closed while playing.

When reinstalling is unlikely to help

  • Only one experience fails: The fault may be specific to that experience, its server, assets, or scripts.
  • Only one network fails: The router, ISP, school/work policy, or parental controls may be responsible.
  • The operating system is unsupported: A reinstall cannot make Roblox support an unsupported platform.
  • A third-party process triggers the message: Identify or close the conflicting software instead of reinstalling repeatedly.
  • Windows files or a driver are damaged: Repair Windows or update the driver when the error points to a system component.
  • Roblox itself may be affected: Avoid claiming a live outage based only on a local error. Check Roblox’s official status information or contact support if the failure persists across devices and networks.

These comparisons can help narrow the cause, but are diagnostic inferences rather than guarantees: another account on the same device tests account versus device; the same account on another device tests device versus account; another network tests network-specific blocking; and another experience tests whether the problem is experience-specific.
