Best overall: MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Suprim X, if it fits your case and costs no more than its cooling and build justify. The RTX 4090 remains a powerful 4K gaming and creator GPU, but it is no longer NVIDIA’s flagship: the RTX 5090 has taken that spot. Among 4090 models, the GPU performance differences are usually modest, so prioritize price, cooler, noise, dimensions, warranty and condition over a small factory-overclock advantage.
Is the RTX 4090 still worth buying in 2026?
It can be—especially for 4K gaming, demanding ray tracing, rendering and other work that benefits from 24GB of VRAM. NVIDIA lists the RTX 4090 with 16,384 CUDA cores, 24GB of GDDR6X on a 384-bit interface, a 2.52GHz reference boost clock and 450W total graphics power. Those specifications remain formidable, but they describe an Ada Lovelace card, not the current generation. NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 specifications and its RTX 5090 product page show the generational shift: the 5090 uses Blackwell, has 32GB of GDDR7 and supports newer DLSS and frame-generation features.

Judge a 4090 by the price and condition of the specific card, not its October 2022 U.S. launch MSRP of $1,599. That launch figure is historical context, not a current price; NVIDIA announced it when the card went on sale in October 2022 (NVIDIA launch announcement). There is no reliable, stable 2026 price established here for the 4090 models below. Stock and seller prices can change quickly, so compare live listings on the day you buy. NVIDIA’s marketplace showed a $1,999 RTX 5090 listing marked out of stock when checked for the August 16, 2026 pricing snapshot; that is a dated availability signal, not a guaranteed price or an in-stock offer (NVIDIA marketplace listing).
- Consider a 4090 when a tested card with a suitable cooler and credible return protection is substantially cheaper than a 5090, and its 24GB of VRAM and performance meet your needs.
- Consider a 5090 when the real price gap is small, or when its newer architecture, 32GB memory and newer AI and frame-generation features matter to you.
- Consider neither yet if your main target is 1080p gaming on a basic display or your CPU is likely to limit performance: the 4090’s cost and power draw may not translate into a useful improvement for that setup.
There is no single price threshold that makes the 4090 the better buy in every region or condition. Compare the actual asking prices, warranty and seller protections, then decide whether the savings compensate for buying the older generation.

How RTX 4090 models differ
Every RTX 4090 uses the same NVIDIA GPU, but partner cards can differ in factory boost clock, power limits and BIOS behavior, PCB and power-delivery design, cooler and fan profile, dimensions, display outputs, dual-BIOS support, warranty and included accessories. NVIDIA notes that add-in-card specifications vary by manufacturer. A model name alone cannot establish whether an individual card will be quiet or free of coil whine: that can vary by unit, power supply, frame rate and electrical environment.
The reference card’s 2.52GHz boost is a useful comparison point, not a promise that every partner card will sustain exactly that clock. For example, MSI lists the Suprim X’s 2,640MHz Extreme Performance mode, while Gigabyte lists a 2,550MHz boost for the Aorus Master. Those are manufacturer-listed specifications, not proof of a proportional frame-rate advantage. Published testing of the ROG Strix OC and Gaming OC likewise finds that factory overclocks are modest compared with the potential price differences (Tom’s Hardware ROG Strix review).
A premium card may offer a larger heatsink, lower temperatures, less noise, higher sustained clocks or more tuning headroom. It usually does not deliver gaming performance in proportion to its premium. Pay extra for a benefit you value—such as acoustics, cooling, warranty or appearance—not just for the highest advertised boost clock. An undervolt can also be worth exploring for efficiency, but results vary with the individual GPU and workload.
Best RTX 4090 models by use case
Best overall: MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Suprim X
The Suprim X is the best-balanced premium air-cooled pick here when its price is sensible and your case has room for it. MSI lists 24GB of GDDR6X and a 2,640MHz Extreme Performance mode, alongside its high-end cooler and construction (MSI product page; MSI specifications). It is a large, premium card, so compare its dimensions and price with less expensive 4090s and the current 5090 before choosing it. Its clock specification alone does not justify a large premium.

Best for enthusiast tuning: ASUS ROG Strix RTX 4090 OC
The ROG Strix OC suits buyers who specifically want an aggressive factory-overclocked model, a substantial cooler and premium construction. ASUS positions it as an enthusiast card with extensive cooling hardware (ASUS specifications; ASUS product page). It is extremely large and expensive, and there is no basis here to call it universally the fastest 4090. Check clearance carefully, and choose it over a cheaper card only if you value its cooler, tuning potential or design.
Best value-oriented air-cooled pick: Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC
Look at the Gaming OC when it is meaningfully cheaper than flagship models and you want a substantial triple-fan air cooler. Published review specifications list a 2,535MHz factory boost clock (Tom’s Hardware review; Gigabyte product page). Check the exact revision, dimensions, warranty and condition: those are not safely inferred from the Gaming OC name alone.
Best premium alternative: Gigabyte Aorus RTX 4090 Master
The Aorus Master is an option for buyers who want a premium cooler and styling. Gigabyte lists 24GB of GDDR6X, a 384-bit interface and a 2,550MHz boost clock (Gigabyte specifications). Its size and premium features, including an integrated display, do not materially change game frame rates. Prefer the Gaming OC or another reputable card if the Master costs substantially more and you do not specifically want its design or cooling.
Best liquid-cooled option: MSI RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X
Choose the Suprim Liquid X if your case supports its radiator and you value liquid cooling for sustained workloads. NVIDIA’s custom-card roundup describes a 240mm-radiator Suprim Liquid design (NVIDIA custom-card roundup). A radiator can help with GPU temperatures, but total noise also depends on the pump and radiator fans. Liquid cooling adds pump and tubing considerations, so it is a weaker fit if you prefer a simpler system or lack radiator clearance.

Best NVIDIA design option: RTX 4090 Founders Edition
The Founders Edition is for buyers who prefer NVIDIA’s own design and want to avoid some of the larger partner-card layouts. NVIDIA introduced a Founders Edition alongside partner cards (NVIDIA announcement). It is not guaranteed to be available new in 2026, and its dimensions still need to be checked against your case. Do not pay a large collector’s premium for the appearance alone.
RTX 4090 versus RTX 5090: which should you choose?
| Factor | RTX 4090 | RTX 5090 |
|---|---|---|
| Generation | Ada Lovelace; NVIDIA’s previous flagship generation. | Blackwell; NVIDIA’s current flagship product generation. |
| Memory | 24GB GDDR6X; 384-bit interface (NVIDIA). | 32GB GDDR7 (NVIDIA). |
| Features | NVIDIA lists DLSS 3.5 features on the 4090 page. | NVIDIA lists DLSS 4.5 and newer frame-generation features on the 5090 page. |
| Price signal | No reliable current price established; check the live listing and the specific card’s condition. | NVIDIA marketplace showed a $1,999 listing marked out of stock in the August 16, 2026 pricing snapshot; availability and price can change. |
| Best case | A substantially cheaper, tested card meets your performance and memory needs. | The price gap is small, or newer features and additional memory matter more than the savings. |
Specifications and feature positioning are from NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 pages. The $1,999 listing is a dated U.S. marketplace signal, not a current in-stock quote (NVIDIA marketplace). Use live prices in your region to make the comparison; do not treat either the 4090’s launch MSRP or the 5090 listing as today’s universal street price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check case fit, power and display before buying
A 4090’s listed length is only one part of fit. Exact dimensions differ by SKU and revision; check the manufacturer’s specification for the precise model rather than relying on a brand-wide estimate. No official manufacturer-published, complete set of dimensions for each recommendation is available here, so no length or slot figure is inferred here.
- Card clearance: Confirm length, height and thickness; leave room for the side panel and power cable. Many partner cards occupy roughly 3.5 to 4 slots, but verify the exact model.
- Nearby hardware: Check the top PCIe slot, drive cages, vertical mounts and front radiator. A card can fit in length but collide with a radiator, cage or side panel.
- Radiator: For a liquid model, verify the radiator’s mounting position and clearance for its fans and tubing. Check that a front radiator will not conflict with the GPU.
- PSU: NVIDIA specifies 450W total graphics power and an included 16-pin adapter intended to connect to three PCIe 8-pin PSU cables. A quality 850W PSU is a practical baseline for many systems; consider 1,000W for a high-end CPU, overclocking or extra headroom. These are system-level recommendations, not universal guarantees: account for PSU quality, age and the rest of your components.
- Cable: Use a native 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 cable if your PSU maker supplies one for your exact PSU. Do not assume a cable is compatible just because the plug fits.
- Monitor and CPU: Consider whether your display resolution and refresh rate can use the GPU’s capability. At 1080p, and sometimes high-refresh 1440p, a CPU limit can reduce the benefit of choosing among 4090 models.
NVIDIA’s reference specifications and adapter details are listed on its RTX 4090 page. Follow the documentation for your exact card and PSU when connecting power.

Take care with the 16-pin connection, particularly when installing a large card or inspecting a used one. A poor connection, damaged cable or forced bend can create a serious hardware risk.
- Insert the connector fully; do not leave it partially seated.
- Route the cable without a sharp bend or force directly beside the plug, and avoid pressure from the case panel.
- Use only cables or adapters rated for the specific PSU and GPU. Do not substitute a physically compatible but unverified cable.
- Do not install a loose, damaged, melted or discolored cable or adapter.
- For a used card, inspect the card-side connector and included adapter before powering it on.
How to inspect a used or refurbished RTX 4090
A working GPU can still have worn fans, damaged connectors or an uncertain history. Ask for clear photographs of the actual card, its serial label and the power connector; listings with stock photos alone leave key condition questions unanswered. Use a meaningful return window so you can test the specific unit.
- Identify the card: Confirm the exact model number, revision and serial label, and compare them with the seller’s listing and manufacturer information.
- Verify the hardware: Request a GPU-Z screenshot showing the expected RTX 4090 GPU and 24GB of VRAM. Treat a screenshot as a starting point, not a substitute for testing the actual card.
- Inspect the physical condition: Look for connector heat damage, missing screws, damaged fans, corrosion, stripped threads and signs of liquid exposure. Ask whether the card has been modified for water cooling, mining or BIOS flashing.
- Run a sustained test: If possible, test a demanding game or benchmark while observing clocks, temperatures, power and memory behavior. Stop if you see artifacts, crashes, abnormal fan behavior or other faults.
- Confirm protection: Check the return period and warranty terms with the seller and in your region. Do not assume a warranty transfers to a second owner.
- Assess the asking price: Compare it with other tested cards and the live price of a 5090. Scarcity and high prices can make fraudulent or incomplete listings more tempting; that is a reason to verify the seller and card, not evidence of a particular fraud rate.
Do not assume a card is reliable merely because it powers on, or that a particular brand is immune to coil whine. The specific card, its condition and your system all matter.
Quick Recap
How to choose between these models
- Choose the Suprim X for a premium air-cooled balance, provided it fits and is not priced far above a comparable 4090.
- Choose the ROG Strix OC if you specifically value enthusiast tuning, its cooler and its design enough to accept the size and price.
- Choose the Gaming OC or a comparable triple-fan model when it is substantially cheaper and has verified condition, suitable cooling and acceptable warranty terms.
- Choose the Suprim Liquid X only if radiator space is available and you accept pump and tubing complexity.
- Choose the Aorus Master or Founders Edition for their particular design or cooling characteristics, not because the name alone promises better gaming performance.
- Choose a 5090 instead when the actual price gap is small or its newer features and 32GB memory fit your workload better.
