What is the ASUS ROG Ally?
The ROG Ally is a handheld gaming PC rather than a closed console. It runs Windows 11 Home, so it can install Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Xbox Game Pass and other Windows software. Compatibility still depends on each game’s launcher, anti-cheat system, controller support and settings.
The name covers more than one configuration. ROG Ally (2023) is the original white handheld. Its launch flagship is the Ryzen Z1 Extreme version; ASUS later introduced a less powerful Ryzen Z1 version. The 2024 ROG Ally X, 2025 ROG Xbox Ally models and 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20 bundle are newer products, not revisions of the original white model.

The Ryzen Z1 Extreme model launched at $699.99 in the United States. ASUS introduced the Ryzen Z1 model later as a cheaper configuration; its exact launch price should be checked against the original regional retailer announcement rather than assumed from the Extreme model’s MSRP.
ASUS’s US support/store page showed a $499.99 listing signal for the original Z1 Extreme RC71L configuration when checked, but that is not a universal current price. Stock, promotions, retailer margin, taxes, shipping and region can change the amount. See the official support/store page for current availability.

Ryzen Z1 versus Ryzen Z1 Extreme
The processor choice is the most important distinction in used and clearance listings. Both chips use the Zen 4/RDNA 3 family and support a 9–30W range, but the integrated graphics are dramatically different.
| Specification | Ryzen Z1 | Ryzen Z1 Extreme |
|---|---|---|
| CPU cores / threads | 6 / 12 | 8 / 16 |
| Maximum CPU boost | Up to 4.9GHz | Up to 5.1GHz |
| GPU compute units | 4 RDNA 3 CUs | 12 RDNA 3 CUs |
| Maximum graphics clock | Up to 2.5GHz | Up to 2.7GHz |
| Theoretical graphics performance | Up to 2.8 teraflops | Up to 8.6 teraflops |
| TDP range | 9–30W | 9–30W |
The Extreme version has three times as many graphics compute units, so it is not merely a modest CPU upgrade. Require the exact processor or model number before comparing a listing. ASUS identifies original-family configurations such as RC71L-ALLY.Z1X_512 (Z1 Extreme) and RC71L-ALLY.Z1_512 (Ryzen Z1).
Display, controls and everyday hardware
120Hz 1080p touchscreen
The 7-inch panel runs at 1920×1080, reaches a rated 500 nits, supports 10-point touch and uses AMD FreeSync Premium variable refresh rate. A 120Hz refresh rate does not guarantee 120 frames per second: demanding games may need lower settings, a lower internal render resolution, upscaling or a frame-rate cap. Display resolution, internal rendering resolution, output resolution and actual frame rate are separate things.

- Stunningly Beautiful Visuals – On the Ally, games are crisp and clear thanks to its 7” Full HD touchscreen display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync Premium technology.
Controls and motion input
Full-size sticks, Hall-effect triggers, a D-pad, standard face buttons, two rear assignable grips and a six-axis gyro provide console-style input options. Windows itself remains desktop software, however, so some setup, launcher or troubleshooting tasks are easier with the touchscreen, a dock, keyboard or mouse.
Ports and external graphics
The single USB-C connector combines USB 3.2 Gen 2, DisplayPort 1.4, USB Power Delivery and ASUS’s proprietary ROG XG Mobile external-GPU interface. It is not simply a Thunderbolt port, and ordinary USB-C eGPU enclosures should not be assumed to work in the same way. Charging, a display, wired accessories and docking may compete for this one connector.
The handheld also has a UHS-II microSD slot and a 3.5mm headset jack. It supports Wi-Fi 6E; ASUS notes that Bluetooth specifications can vary by operating-system version and model.

The original Ally includes a 512GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD in the smaller M.2 2230 form factor. The drive is replaceable, but confirm that 2230 size before buying an upgrade. The 2024 Ally X moved to the more spacious M.2 2280 layout.
- Windows, recovery data and formatting reduce the usable space below the advertised 512GB.
- Modern PC games can consume much of the internal drive quickly.
- A reputable UHS-rated microSD card is convenient for expanding a library, but internal SSD storage is preferable for demanding games and system upgrades.
- Back up recovery data and verify the exact replacement form factor before opening the device.
Battery life and performance expectations
The battery is rated at 40Wh. There is no honest single runtime figure for every game: results change with the 9W, 15W, 25W and 30W operating modes, brightness, refresh rate, Wi-Fi activity, frame-rate caps, background Windows processes and battery health.

The Ryzen Z1 Extreme is a powerful integrated APU for a 2023 handheld, but the 9–30W envelope forces trade-offs among frame rate, heat, fan noise and unplugged time. It can target 1080p in suitable games; demanding modern titles may need reduced settings, lower internal resolution or upscaling. ASUS’s “up to 8.6 teraflops” figure is a theoretical specification, not a game benchmark.

ASUS’s current lineup includes the 2024 ROG Ally X, the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, and a 2026 ROG Xbox Ally X20 bundle. Check the current ROG Ally family listing rather than treating every product labeled “ROG Ally” as the 2023 device.
- RC71L: original ROG Ally family.
- RC72LA: ROG Ally X (2024).
- RC73YA / RC73XA: 2025 ROG Xbox Ally family.
Listings that omit the processor or model number are risky: “ROG Ally” can refer to either the much stronger Z1 Extreme or the substantially weaker Ryzen Z1 configuration.
Is the original ROG Ally still worth buying in 2026?
It makes sense when
- You find the Z1 Extreme version at a substantial discount or attractive refurbished price.
- You want a lightweight 608g Windows handheld with a sharp 1080p/120Hz VRR display.
- You use several PC launchers and accept Windows maintenance, updates and occasional troubleshooting.
- You are comfortable adding storage or using a dock to work around the single USB-C port.
Choose newer hardware when
- Battery life is a priority: the Ally X has an 80Wh battery, twice the original’s rated capacity.
- You need more shared system/graphics memory, more storage headroom or easier docking.
- You frequently connect displays, storage and peripherals at the same time.
- The original unit costs close to newer Ally-family hardware.
ASUS’s product information shows a support-period date through December 30, 2026 for the original product-page configuration. That is a published support-period indication, not a guarantee that every driver or Windows application stops working on that date. Used buyers should also inspect battery health, microSD operation, sticks, triggers, display, charger and proof of ownership.
Quick Recap
Useful accessories for the original Ally
- USB-C dock or hub: solves the one-port limitation when charging while using a display, Ethernet, keyboard, mouse or storage.
- 65W USB-C charger: useful as a replacement or travel charger; verify USB Power Delivery output and regional plug requirements.
- microSD card: expands the game library, though it is not equivalent to internal SSD performance for every workload.
- 2230 NVMe SSD: enables internal expansion when the replacement is confirmed compatible and recovery data is backed up.
- ROG XG Mobile: works through the original proprietary interface, but its cost, size and connector lock-in make it a specialized choice rather than a universal USB-C eGPU solution.
