Wizard of Legend has an official Linux build, and Steam lists Ubuntu 16.04 or later. Install it through Steam for the simplest setup, or choose GOG for a DRM-free Linux copy with an offline installer. You do not need Proton for the game’s listed native build.
Is Wizard of Legend compatible with Ubuntu?
Yes. The original Wizard of Legend, released May 15, 2018, is listed for SteamOS + Linux, with Ubuntu 16.04+ specified in its minimum requirements. GOG also identifies Linux as supported. This is a native Linux release, not just a Windows game that must run through Proton. Steam’s product listing and GOG’s product page are the official store sources.

A listed minimum operating-system version is not a guarantee that every later Ubuntu release, graphics driver, desktop session, or hardware configuration will behave identically. The store listing also does not give a current Ubuntu-specific recommended GPU or driver matrix.
Install Wizard of Legend on Ubuntu through Steam
For an Ubuntu desktop user who already uses Steam, the client handles installation and updates in one place. Valve’s Ubuntu guidance points to the official Steam .deb package; use the Steam downloads page rather than an unofficial package mirror.

- Open the Steam downloads page and download the Linux/Ubuntu .deb package.
- Open the downloaded package in App Center, Ubuntu Software, or the package installer, then select Install.
- Launch Steam from the Applications menu, sign in, and let the client update and finish its first-run setup.
- Find Wizard of Legend in the store, then purchase it or redeem it if you already own it.
- Open Library → Wizard of Legend → Install. Select a drive with at least 1 GB free; extra space is useful for Steam files, updates, and user data.
- When installation finishes, select Play. Leave Proton disabled initially so Steam uses the native Linux build.
If you prefer the terminal, first download the .deb package. This command assumes it is in ~/Downloads; adjust the path if your browser saved it elsewhere:
sudo apt install ~/Downloads/steam*.deb
If APT reports unresolved dependencies, run sudo apt --fix-broken install, then retry installing the downloaded package. This is a general Ubuntu package-repair step, not a game-specific fix. Valve’s Ubuntu .deb guidance is the reference for that installation route.
Should you enable Proton?
Usually not. Proton is Steam’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux; it is intended to help with Windows-only titles, while Wizard of Legend already has a listed Linux build. Valve explains Steam Play and Proton in its Steam Play FAQ.
If the native version will not launch, you can test Proton as a troubleshooting comparison:
- In Steam Library, right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Keep Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool disabled at first.
- If the native build fails, enable the option and test the currently available Proton version shown in your client. Change one setting at a time.
- If Proton behaves worse, return to the native setting.
Using Proton can add variables such as different controller behavior, graphics issues, launch options, or save locations, so it is better treated as a fallback than as the default.
Install the GOG version
GOG is the alternative for players who want a DRM-free copy and a standalone offline installer. Its product page says Linux is supported, Galaxy is optional, and the game can be installed without the Galaxy client.

- Open the official GOG product page and buy the game or sign in to the account that owns it.
- Open your GOG library and download the Linux installer or offline installer offered for the game.
- Follow the installer’s instructions, then launch the game from the application menu or its installation directory.
If the downloaded installer needs executable permission, use the following pattern after replacing the illustrative name with the actual filename:
chmod +x ./<downloaded-installer>./<downloaded-installer>
The filename and packaging can vary, so do not assume a fixed command or installer name. GOG Galaxy is not required to play, although Galaxy features can provide services such as synchronization.
Minimum system requirements
These are the store-listed minimums for the Linux version, not a performance guarantee on every current Ubuntu setup.

The figures come from the Steam minimum requirements. OpenGL 2.0 is an older, broad baseline: outdated drivers, hybrid graphics, display scaling, permissions, or an unusual desktop setup can still cause trouble. The listing does not specify a modern recommended GPU or frame-rate target. Leave more than the listed 1 GB free when possible to accommodate Steam runtime files, updates, and user data.
What kind of game is it?
Wizard of Legend is a fast-action dungeon crawler built around repeated runs, movement, spell combinations, and learning enemy patterns. Its levels are procedurally generated, and the store lists more than 100 spells and items. It is better described as a replayable action roguelite than as a traditional, linear RPG.
Steam lists single-player and shared/split-screen cooperative play, local multiplayer, and full controller support. A gamepad can suit the quick combat, but support for a gamepad does not guarantee identical behavior across every controller model or Bluetooth adapter.

Fixes if the game does not launch or work properly
Steam installation fails
Check that the downloaded .deb is where the command expects it to be. If package setup was interrupted, update package lists and repair dependencies, then retry the official package installation:
sudo apt updatesudo apt --fix-broken install
If you installed Steam through a different package format, remember that the .deb steps above are for the official Ubuntu package route; they do not establish that every other Steam package format is unusable for this game.
The game opens to a black screen or exits
- In Steam, open the game’s properties and use the installed-files option to verify the game files.
- Install available Ubuntu updates and update graphics drivers using Ubuntu’s supported tools.
- If the issue appears tied to the desktop session, try an X11 session as a diagnostic comparison. This is not a claim that Wayland is categorically unsupported.
- Temporarily turn off unusual display scaling, compositor tweaks, or third-party overlays.
- Confirm the native build is selected before testing Proton, and change only one variable at a time.
- For persistent problems, consult Steam’s game-specific technical-support page.
A controller is not detected
- Connect or pair the controller before launching the game.
- Try Steam Input in the game’s controller properties; if input is incorrect, test with Steam Input disabled.
- Use a wired connection temporarily to distinguish a pairing or Bluetooth issue from game input behavior.
Audio, display, or performance trouble
- Check that Ubuntu has selected the intended audio output.
- Try windowed or borderless display mode if fullscreen presentation is the problem.
- Update Mesa or the proprietary GPU driver through Ubuntu’s supported tools.
- Temporarily disable third-party overlays and avoid launch options copied from unrelated games.
Moving saves between versions
Steam lists Steam Cloud for its edition, while GOG describes Galaxy as optional and associates it with synchronization features. Do not assume that saves synchronize between Steam and GOG installations. Back up save data before changing compatibility settings or switching editions; save locations can depend on the platform and configuration.

Steam lists Steam Cloud, Remote Play features, Family Sharing, and local/shared-screen co-op for its edition. Those Steam-specific services should not be assumed for GOG. GOG’s offline installer is the more direct choice when launcher independence matters.

Use the official Steam listing or GOG listing. The legitimate editions already provide Linux options; cracked downloads, repacks, torrents, and unknown .deb or .sh files add licensing and malware risks without being necessary for installation.
