Slay the Spire has official Linux releases and can be downloaded legally on Ubuntu from Steam or GOG. Steam is the simplest choice for most users; GOG is better if you want a DRM-free offline installer. You do not normally need Proton because Steam lists a native SteamOS + Linux build.
What kind of game is Slay the Spire?
Slay the Spire is a single-player, turn-based roguelike deckbuilder with RPG-style progression. It is not a conventional open-world or party-based RPG. Each run asks you to build a deck, manage limited energy in combat, choose a route through a procedurally varied tower, and adapt to relics, events and enemies.
- Choose one of the game’s four playable characters.
- Start a climb and fight using cards drawn from your deck.
- Add, remove or upgrade cards and collect gold and relics.
- Select branching paths containing fights, elite enemies, events, shops and rest sites.
- Defeat bosses, or begin a new run after death while retaining certain unlocks rather than the exact build.

Steam: the default recommendation
Use Steam if you want the easiest Ubuntu setup, automatic updates, Steam Cloud, achievements, Workshop access, controller integration and a single library across compatible devices. The product page identifies app ID 646570 as SteamOS + Linux. The US page displayed a regular price of $24.99 on August 18, 2026; regional prices, taxes and sales can differ.

GOG: the DRM-free alternative
GOG states that its Linux edition is DRM-free, works offline and does not require GOG Galaxy. You can keep the offline installer for later use. Galaxy may still be used as an optional library and update client. Availability and installer formats can change, so download from the official GOG product page.
Avoid cracked copies, torrents, random “free download” sites, unverified PPAs and standalone .deb packages. They add malware and version risks when legitimate Linux builds are available.
Install Slay the Spire through Steam
- Install Steam from Ubuntu’s software-management tools or from Valve’s official Linux package instructions.
- Launch Steam and sign in or create an account.
- Search for Slay the Spire and open the product with app ID
646570. - Buy it if it is not already owned, then open the game’s Library page.
- Select Install, choose a drive with at least 1 GB free for the game’s published minimum (more is advisable for Steam, updates and caches), and let the download finish.
- Select Play.
Because the store lists a native Linux build, leave Steam’s compatibility setting at its default first. If the native build has a specific problem, you can test a Proton version from the game’s Properties, but Proton is a fallback rather than a requirement and can change mod behavior, save locations or performance.

Optional command-line Steam package installation
Valve’s Steam-for-Linux documentation describes installing the downloaded official .deb package with:

sudo apt install gdebi-core
gdebi steam_latest.debDownload the package from Valve’s current official location, or double-click it to open Ubuntu Software. Do not rely on an old, hard-coded package URL.
Install the GOG version on Ubuntu
- Open the official GOG Slay the Spire page and buy or redeem the game.
- Download the Linux installer, or install it through optional GOG Galaxy.
- For an offline shell installer, open a terminal in the download folder and make the actual downloaded file executable:
chmod +x SlayTheSpire*.sh- Run the installer (replace the wildcard with the real filename if needed):
./SlayTheSpire*.sh- Follow the prompts, then launch the game from Ubuntu’s application menu or its installation directory.
The installer is officially Linux-compatible, but an old binary can still encounter dependency issues on a future distribution. Galaxy is not required for the offline route.

Ubuntu and hardware requirements
Steam’s product page lists these minimum requirements for the game:

Ubuntu 14.04 is an old game-listing minimum, not a guarantee that today’s Steam client will install there. Valve’s current Steam-for-Linux documentation requires a supported 64-bit x86 Ubuntu installation, current graphics support and both 64-bit and 32-bit graphics-driver components. It states that glibc 2.31 or newer is required from August 15, 2025, and warns that older Ubuntu LTS releases can stop working. Use a currently supported Ubuntu release and up-to-date drivers.

The game is lightweight by modern standards, but integrated-GPU performance, hybrid graphics, Wayland or X11, fractional scaling and driver quality can affect launch and display behavior. The 1 GB figure covers the game’s listed minimum, not Steam itself, shader caches, saves, updates or other installed content.

Does it run natively on Linux?
Yes. Steam labels the title SteamOS + Linux, and GOG explicitly lists Linux support. A native build is the logical first choice on Ubuntu because it avoids a Windows compatibility layer. Proton can be tested only when the native path has a concrete issue; it is not required simply because the computer runs Ubuntu.
Does it need an internet connection?
Steam needs internet for account authentication, downloading, installation and updates. Offline Mode may allow play after setup, but Steam’s client policies can change. GOG states that its DRM-free edition can be played offline, and its offline installer does not require Galaxy.
Troubleshoot a launch failure
- Restart Steam or your desktop session.
- Install Ubuntu updates, update the GPU driver and reboot after driver changes.
- In Steam, verify the game’s files.
- Disable Workshop and other mods, then test the unmodified game.
- Try windowed mode instead of fullscreen and temporarily disable overlays.
- On a hybrid laptop, confirm that the game is using the intended dedicated GPU.
- Run the game from a terminal to capture an error message.
- In Steam, open Help → System Information and compare the client and driver details with Valve’s Linux guidance.
Common causes
- Old Ubuntu: The 14.04 game minimum does not override current Steam-client requirements.
- Missing 32-bit graphics libraries: Steam and older Linux games may need both driver architectures.
- Hybrid graphics or display protocol differences: Wayland/X11, scaling and GPU selection can affect fullscreen, cursor and startup behavior.
- GOG permissions: Run
chmod +xon the downloaded installer. - Insufficient space: Leave room beyond the game’s 1 GB published minimum.
Is it worth downloading on Ubuntu?
It is a strong fit if you enjoy deliberate turn-based decisions, deck experimentation and replayable runs. Official Steam and GOG Linux releases, modest published requirements and GOG’s offline option make acquisition straightforward. It is a poor fit if you want persistent equipment, a traditional party RPG or a story campaign that plays the same way every time.
