Yes—Final Fantasy XI is playable on Ubuntu, but there is no native Linux client. The practical route is the Windows release running in Wine, managed by Lutris. This community-maintained setup can run the retail game, while Windower and Ashita remain unofficial and less predictable than the unmodified client.
What you need before installing
- A 64-bit Ubuntu desktop with working graphics drivers and reliable internet.
- At least 16 GB of free storage as a sensible baseline from Square Enix’s Windows requirements; this is not an Ubuntu-certified minimum. See Square Enix’s requirements.
- A Square Enix account, an active FFXI service account and registered expansions if you intend to play retail content. The client download is free, but it does not grant a registration code.
- A keyboard and mouse. Square Enix’s reference setup includes a numeric keypad; a gamepad is optional but useful.
- The installer matching your account’s region: US, EU or Japanese.
Ubuntu release, desktop session (X11 or Wayland), GPU driver, Lutris packaging method and Wine runner can all change results. Linux support is therefore best described as playable through Wine with community tooling, not officially supported.

Download the official files
Use Square Enix’s official Windows client download, not a repackaged executable. The US download consists of five files:
FFXIFullSetup_US.part1.exeFFXIFullSetup_US.part2.rarFFXIFullSetup_US.part3.rarFFXIFullSetup_US.part4.rarFFXIFullSetup_US.part5.rar
Place every part in one directory before extraction; the resulting folder contains FFXISetup.exe. EU and JP downloads use their own files and Lutris scripts.

Client versus service entitlement
On the US site, prices observed on August 18, 2026 were $29.99 for the Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition and $9.99 for individual expansion registration codes. Square Enix lists these current US service fees (each covers 30 days):
| Item | US price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Basic service | $11.95 | Per 30 days |
| Character | $1.00 | Per character, per 30 days |
| Mog Wardrobe | $2.00 | Per 30 days |
| Free trial | 30 days | As stated on the US service-fee page |

Why Lutris is the best starting point
Lutris provides FFXI-specific scripts for US, EU and JP releases, creates a dedicated Wine prefix and can expose separate entries for PlayOnline configuration, FFXI configuration and the game. Its FFXI listings include D8VK and dgVoodoo-plus-DXVK variants. Windower’s documentation also points Linux users toward Lutris.

- Massively multiplayer online roleplaying Final Fantasy game
- Experience missions by yourself or join up with other party members to form alliances
- Explore the incredibly vast environments that make up Vana'diel
- Connect and communicate with thousands of other gamers
- Note: this online-only game requires an Internet connection and charges a monthly fee payable by credit card
Install Lutris using the current method for your Ubuntu release from Lutris; package and Flatpak availability changes between releases. In Lutris, open runner management and install a current stable Lutris Wine or Wine-GE runner. Do not mix prefixes created by native and Flatpak Lutris unless you know their locations and permissions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Install the vanilla game through Lutris
- Open the FFXI page. Search Lutris for FINAL FANTASY XI Online and choose the script for your region. The US full installer is documented at this installer entry; EU and JP entries are EU and JP.
- Select the full installer and files. When prompted, point Lutris to the downloaded parts and let it create a new, dedicated prefix.
- Allow extraction to finish. Disk-space calculation or archive extraction can appear idle for several minutes. Do not terminate it immediately.
- Install PlayOnline and FFXI. The official installer installs the DirectX runtime, PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY XI. Lutris installs the associated MSI packages into the prefix.
- Open the configuration entries. Use Lutris’s PlayOnline Configuration and FFXI Configuration entries instead of hunting through hidden prefix folders. The US utility is typically at
C:Program Files (x86)PlayOnlineSquareEnixFINAL FANTASY XIToolsUSFINAL FANTASY XI Config.exe; EU and JP paths differ. - Start conservatively. Try 1280×720, leave enhancements off, launch PlayOnline and log in. Confirm that the game reaches character selection or gameplay, then close and launch once more to verify the prefix persists.
- Patch the installation. The initial files are not necessarily the final patched client. Let PlayOnline and FFXI update before adding any third-party launcher.
Lutris records a known US configuration issue where the opening movie can be black. Press Esc to continue.
Rendering choices: D8VK or dgVoodoo/DXVK
D8VK translates older Direct3D 8 calls through Vulkan. The dgVoodoo-plus-DXVK variant uses a different compatibility path and is listed by Lutris as useful for third-party tools that cannot insert into the older D3D8 path. Neither is universally faster or more compatible.

- Rise of the Zilart
- Chains of Promathia
- Treasures of Aht Urghan
- Wings of the Goddess
- Start with the region’s current Lutris default.
- If the game launches with rendering errors, test the other FFXI-specific variant.
- Change one variable at a time and record the working runner and renderer.
Do not assume identical results across AMD, Intel and NVIDIA drivers, or between X11 and Wayland.
Add Windower only after vanilla FFXI works
Windower 4 adds plugins, Lua addons and interface features, but its documentation says full Linux support is not guaranteed. Lutris lists a Wine Windower 4 Live installer and notes that it works best with the full US version using D8VK.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Install the Lutris Windower entry (or follow Windower’s current Linux instructions).
- Point it to the existing FFXI installation when requested and create a profile.
- Launch through Windower before installing addons.
- Add plugins and addons individually so a failure has an identifiable cause.
- Keep the vanilla PlayOnline entry as a permanent diagnostic baseline.
A Windower crash does not prove that FFXI or the Wine prefix is broken; game updates, runner changes, injection and individual addons can each be responsible.

Lumoria, Ashita and manual Wine
| Option | Best for | Advantage | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lutris vanilla | Most Ubuntu users | FFXI scripts and separate configuration entries | Unofficial Wine maintenance |
| Lutris + Windower | Addon and plugin users | Documented community route | Linux support explicitly not guaranteed |
| Lumoria | Users wanting an integrated Linux/Windower setup | Coordinates more of the setup | Community project; check its current release state |
| Ashita through Wine | Existing Ashita users | Familiar Windows-side toolset | Other operating systems are not directly supported |
| Manual Wine | Advanced users | Maximum control | Dependencies, prefixes, DLLs and repairs are your responsibility |
Lumoria is a GPL-licensed, community Linux installer and launcher, not a Square Enix product. Its documentation suggests Lutris for older hardware or Flatpak environments requiring 32-bit support.

Lutris cannot find the installer parts
Confirm that all five regional files are in the same directory, that names were not changed by the browser, and that you selected the matching US, EU or JP script. Re-download a damaged part from the official page rather than using a mirror.
The installer appears frozen
Wait through archive extraction and disk-space calculation. If it genuinely exits, retry in the same prefix before changing runners; check the Lutris log for the first error.

PlayOnline will not start or closes during an update
- Relaunch it with the runner that previously worked.
- Temporarily remove Windower, overlays and other injectors.
- Check the Lutris log and retry the update.
- If the problem began after a runner or driver change, revert that change.
- Keep the old prefix and test a new clean prefix before deleting anything.
Users have reported update-related crashes after Wine changes, but these are community experiences rather than an official compatibility statement.
Black opening video or black game window
Press Esc for the documented opening-cinematic issue. For a black game window, test windowed mode, then the alternate Lutris renderer, changing only one setting per attempt.
Window focus, resizing or controller problems
Use windowed mode while diagnosing focus loss between PlayOnline, Windower and FFXI. Map a gamepad through Ubuntu or Steam Input, and enable numeric-keypad emulation on compact keyboards when required by the game’s controls.
Windower or Ashita fails while vanilla works
Keep the base installation intact. Check the tool’s own Linux notes, remove addons and plugins, disable overlays, and test the renderer recommended by its installer. Add components back one at a time.
The prefix is corrupted
Do not overwrite your only copy. Record the working runner and renderer, create a fresh dedicated prefix with the same regional installer, and retain the old prefix until the new one completes login and an in-game test.
When Ubuntu is—and is not—the right choice
- Worth trying: You are comfortable with Lutris, staged testing and occasional maintenance.
- Less suitable: You require official Linux support, one-click setup or guaranteed compatibility with every addon.
- Practical fallback: Keep a Windows installation available if Windower/Ashita is essential or you cannot tolerate troubleshooting after game, driver or Wine updates.
Steam/Proton can be experimented with, including on Linux handhelds, but it is not the default recommendation here: separate compatibility prefixes can complicate PlayOnline and third-party launchers.
