For a first ascension in the browser or Steam version, aim for at least 365 prestige and Heavenly Chips. That is the current Cookie Clicker wiki’s recommended first-ascension minimum, not a mandatory threshold: ascend earlier only if you deliberately want a reset to unlock Legacy, or wait longer if you want enough chips for more upgrades. Before confirming, check the Legacy number and the heavenly upgrades you can afford; ascending resets your current run.
What ascension does—and what it resets
Ascension ends your current run and starts another with permanent progression. Your cookies, buildings, and ordinary upgrades are reset. Your prestige levels, Heavenly Chips, heavenly upgrades, and achievements persist. The prestige you gain also supplies a permanent CpS bonus of 1% per prestige level, stacking additively.
In the browser or Steam client, use Info near the top of the game, then select Legacy. The official browser client currently shows the top-level labels Options, Stats, Info, and Legacy; its page displays “Live version,” “Try the beta!,” “v. 1.0466,” and “Classic.” Open the official Cookie Clicker web client.
On the Legacy screen, View Prestige previews the heavenly-upgrade tree; it does not ascend or let you spend chips. To commit, use Ascend, then confirm with the second Ascend control on the ascension screen. See the Cookie Clicker wiki’s Ascension page.

How to tell when you can ascend
The number beside Legacy is the new prestige and Heavenly Chips you would gain by ascending now. It is not your total lifetime prestige. Use it to decide whether the reset is worth taking and which upgrades it would fund.
The gain is determined by total cookies baked all time, in trillions:

- Game Play Games Leaderboards
- Bake bake bake... tap tap tap...
new prestige = floor((total cookies baked all time / 1,000,000,000,000)^(1/3)) − current prestige
The resulting prestige gain is also the number of Heavenly Chips gained. The progression uses a cube root, not the square root sometimes repeated in older or inaccurate guides. The current formula is documented on the Ascension page; a conflicting square-root claim appears in this older guide.

When to make your first ascension
The current community wiki recommends waiting until you can gain at least 365 prestige/Heavenly Chips, which corresponds to approximately 48.627 quintillion cookies baked all time. Its first-ascension package spends all 365 chips on nine upgrades. These figures are the guide’s milestone values, not a requirement imposed by the game.
| Upgrade | Cost in Heavenly Chips |
|---|---|
| Legacy | 1 |
| Heavenly Cookies | 3 |
| How to Bake Your Dragon | 9 |
| Box of Brand Biscuits | 25 |
| Tin of British Tea Biscuits | 25 |
| Box of Macarons | 25 |
| Heavenly Luck | 77 |
| Permanent Upgrade Slot 1 | 100 |
| Heralds | 100 |
| Total | 365 |
This is a recommended package, not a rule that you must ascend at exactly 365. The guide calls its thresholds ascension minimums and recommends buying from two or more consecutive ascension tiers when your chip balance allows it. If your next useful purchases are within reach by waiting, you can keep baking; if you can already afford a worthwhile package and want the next run’s permanent benefits, you can ascend.

- A great Game That is Made on Patient and Adjust your game for best performance
Ascending at one chip is technically possible, but it resets the run for only one prestige level and one Heavenly Chip. The wiki FAQ recommends 365 or more unless the run has stalled and you intentionally want an early reset to unlock Legacy. See the FAQ and Ascension guide.
Later ascensions: use milestones, not a fixed schedule
There is no need to ascend after a particular amount of time. Compare the chips available now with the next package you want to buy; the guide’s listed later milestones illustrate how sharply the targets grow.

These are the current Ascension guide’s values for those listed packages, not universal deadlines or an instruction to reset as soon as a number appears. Your practical decision is whether the available chips buy upgrades you want now or whether continued progress is worth the delay.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ascend safely: a short checklist
- Check the client. This guide’s Legacy path and advice describe the browser/PC system. The official web client links to the Android and Steam editions, but ascension differs on mobile: mobile has 100% offline production with no time limit by default, while PC has a different offline-production heavenly-upgrade branch and uses Power clicks and related upgrades. Consult the Ascension page for edition-specific details rather than applying mobile advice to browser or Steam.
- Open the Legacy screen. In the web/PC client, select Info, then Legacy.
- Read the available gain. Treat the Legacy number as the new prestige and chip gain from ascending now, not your lifetime total.
- Preview and plan purchases. Use View Prestige to inspect the tree, then decide whether the upgrades affordable with your gain justify resetting.
- Confirm deliberately. Use Ascend and then the second Ascend confirmation. If you meant only to view the tree, do not confirm.
Options and mistakes to avoid
Challenge Mode changes the next run
You can choose Challenge Mode before reincarnating; the next run begins as though a new game had started. Reincarnating again returns the game to normal mode. Choose it only if you want that altered run, rather than treating it as a routine part of ascending. Details are on the Ascension page.
Wipe Save is not ascension
Wipe Save is a separate action that erases permanent progress ordinary ascension preserves. Do not use it as a way to perform a normal reset. See the ascension guide’s distinction.
Console edits are not persistent legitimate progress
Assigning Game.prestige or Game.prestige['Heavenly chips'] through the JavaScript console does not create persistent legitimate progress; the cited reference says refreshing restores the normal Heavenly Chip amount. See Cookie Clicker’s Cheating page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line: choose the reset by the upgrades it buys
For a first browser/PC ascension, use 365 chips as the current wiki’s practical target, then check the available package and whether waiting has a meaningful payoff. Ascend through Legacy only when you intend to end the run, and confirm only after reviewing the reset and purchases.
