What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To copy a Steam screenshot saved on your Windows PC, open Steam’s screenshot browser, select the game, right-click the image, and choose Show on disk. For an image that exists only in your Steam Community gallery, open it in a browser and use Save image as…. These are different cases: a Community upload does not necessarily mean the original file is still on this PC.
Download a screenshot saved on your PC
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Choose View, then Recordings & Screenshots. If your client instead shows Screenshots, choose that.
- Select the game that contains the image.
- Select the screenshot, right-click it, and choose Show on disk.
- In File Explorer, select the image and press Ctrl+C. Open the folder where you want to keep it and press Ctrl+V.
The Steam screenshot browser is the best starting point because it opens the file’s actual location without requiring you to guess which Steam library, account folder, or game ID applies. Steam’s screenshot system is tied to the Steam Overlay; Valve documents the screenshot feature and its controls at Steamworks: Screenshots. The newer menu wording and Show on disk steps are reflected in Steam Community guidance.
Find the screenshot folder manually
Steam-managed screenshots are typically stored below the Steam installation folder in this pattern:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata<SteamUserID>760remote<GameAppID>screenshots
For example, if Steam is installed on another drive, the path may begin with D:Steam instead. Replace <SteamUserID> with the account’s numeric folder name and <GameAppID> with the game’s numeric App ID. Each game has its own folder. The path is typical, not universal; the Steam installation location can differ. A community discussion documents this folder pattern at Steam Community.

Once File Explorer is open to the folder, copy the images you need with Ctrl+C and paste them into your destination with Ctrl+V. For a backup, copy the whole game-specific screenshots folder. Check the file extensions in File Explorer rather than assuming every screenshot has the same format.
Save screenshots that are only in your Steam profile
If an image appears in your Steam Community gallery but is not on the current PC—for example, after moving computers or reinstalling Windows—save it from the gallery in a web browser:
- Sign in to Steam in your browser and open your profile.
- Open Screenshots or the relevant game gallery.
- Open the image so it is displayed at full size.
- Right-click the image and choose Save image as….
- Choose a folder on your PC and save the file.
This browser-based recovery method is community guidance, not a formal Valve support procedure; see the Steam Community discussion. It can recover an image available online, but it does not recreate a missing local original automatically.

Local screenshots, Community uploads, and Steam Cloud are different
A screenshot can be saved locally without being uploaded, or uploaded to your Community profile while its original local file is no longer on your current PC. Uploading and downloading are separate actions. Do not assume ordinary Steam Cloud synchronization will restore every screenshot to the normal local screenshot folder: Valve describes Steam Cloud data separately in its Steam Cloud FAQ, while screenshots use Steam’s screenshot and Community workflows.
Save future screenshots to an easy-to-find folder
To create an additional copy outside Steam’s managed screenshot directory, open Steam → Settings → In Game and find the screenshot options. Wording and layout can vary by client version. Enable the option for an external or uncompressed screenshot copy, then select a folder such as:
C:Users<YourName>PicturesSteam Screenshots
The external copy and the Steam-managed screenshot are separate files and may differ in compression or image quality. Merely choosing a custom folder may not put files there if external-copy saving is not enabled. A Steam Client Beta discussion describes this distinction between the custom external-copy folder and the managed userdata...760remote...screenshots location: Steam Client Beta discussion.

Take a Steam screenshot
F12 is Steam’s default screenshot shortcut when the Steam Overlay is active. To check or change it, open Steam → Settings → In Game and find Screenshot shortcut key. Valve’s Steamworks screenshot documentation describes the default key, Overlay requirement, and screenshot settings.
Steam may show the Screenshot Uploader after you close a game, where you can review and upload captures. A screenshot being taken does not by itself mean it has been uploaded publicly; uploader behavior can be controlled in Steam’s settings.

Troubleshoot missing Steam screenshots
F12 does nothing
- Confirm the Steam Overlay is active for the game and check that the screenshot shortcut has not been changed.
- On a laptop, try Fn+F12 if function-key mode intercepts F12.
- Another game binding, overlay, recording, or accessibility application may be using the key. Change Steam’s screenshot shortcut in Steam → Settings → In Game.
- If the game was launched outside Steam, or through a launcher setup that interferes with the Overlay, Steam’s integrated screenshot feature may not work as expected.
Show on disk opens an unexpected folder, or the manual path is empty
Check that the right Steam account and game are selected. A PC can have multiple Steam accounts or Steam installations, and each game uses a different App ID folder. Use Show on disk from the selected image to avoid guessing which location applies.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
The custom screenshot folder is empty
Check whether the external or uncompressed copy option is enabled. The custom folder is for that additional copy; the ordinary Steam-managed screenshot may remain under userdata<SteamUserID>760remote<GameAppID>screenshots.
The image is visible online but not on this PC
Use the browser gallery’s Save image as… option. The online image can be available even when the local file is absent.
You need to archive a large gallery
Steam’s standard browser save workflow is manageable for a few images but tedious for a large gallery. The available guidance does not establish a clearly documented official one-click export for an entire gallery. For a large archive, save images in batches through the browser; assess the provenance and security of any third-party downloader before using it.

Steam screenshots versus Windows and GPU captures
| Capture method | Where to look | Appears in Steam’s screenshot browser? |
|---|---|---|
| Steam screenshot | Steam-managed screenshot folder, or an optional external-copy folder | Yes, as a Steam screenshot |
| Windows Snipping Tool | The location selected when saving the capture | No; it is a separate Windows capture |
| Windows Game Bar | The location used by Game Bar | No; its capture controls and files are separate |
| NVIDIA or AMD capture software | The folder configured in that software | No; its captures are separate from Steam’s library |
For a Steam-linked game capture, use Steam’s screenshot system. For the desktop, menus, or an app outside Steam, Windows capture tools may be more appropriate; GPU software is another independent option.
