FPS drops

Why Does My Laptop Lose FPS? Causes and Fixes

FPS drops are a symptom, not a diagnosis. Use timing, temperatures, clocks, power state, and GPU activity to identify what is limiting your laptop and apply the right fix.

A laptop usually loses FPS when it hits a limit: heat, power, the wrong GPU, a busy CPU or memory, a game setting, or a software problem. The timing of the drop is a useful clue. If performance falls after several minutes, check temperatures and clock speeds; if it is low from launch, check power mode, GPU selection, and settings. Measure what changes when the frames fall before applying fixes.

What kind of FPS problem are you seeing?

Low average FPS, a sudden drop, and uneven motion are different symptoms. FPS measures rendered frames; network latency affects how quickly online actions reach a server, not how many frames the laptop renders.

Symptom Likely causes to check
FPS is low from launch Wrong GPU, low-power mode, demanding settings, or hardware limits
FPS starts high and declines after 5–30 minutes Heat buildup, sustained power limits, or blocked cooling
Every game slowed after a driver update Driver regression, profile or installation issue
Only one game is affected Game patch, per-game settings, shader compilation, mods, or damaged files
FPS falls only on battery Battery power policy, OEM performance limits, or GPU switching
GPU usage is low while one or more CPU threads are heavily loaded CPU bottleneck, background work, or simulation-heavy settings
GPU usage stays near full while CPU load is moderate GPU or graphics-settings bottleneck
FPS counter is high but motion feels uneven Frame pacing, shader compilation, overlays, or V-Sync/VRR interaction
FPS changes when the charger is moved or unplugged Power profile, charger, charging port, or power-delivery problem
FPS stops at 30 or 60 Frame cap, V-Sync, battery or quiet profile, or display refresh-rate setting

These are clues, not proof. A high average FPS can coexist with poor 1% lows, the slowest frame times that reveal intermittent stutter.

Measure the drop before changing settings

Repeat the same scene at the same resolution and graphics preset. Record FPS or a frame-time graph, CPU and GPU usage and clock speeds, temperatures, RAM use, disk activity, charger status, and Windows and laptop-maker power modes. Compare the first five minutes with play after 20–30 minutes, plugged-in with battery operation, and one game with another. Change one variable at a time.

Task Manager, opened with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, shows CPU, memory, disk, and GPU activity. A sensor-monitoring utility can provide temperatures, clocks, and power readings; close monitoring utilities before installing graphics drivers. Do not treat a single utilization percentage or temperature as a diagnosis. Total CPU use can look moderate while one heavily loaded thread limits frame production, and temperature limits differ by hardware model.

  • If GPU use is near its maximum and lowering resolution substantially improves FPS, the game is probably GPU-limited.
  • If a CPU thread is heavily loaded and lowering resolution changes little, suspect a CPU limit or competing process.
  • If clocks fall as temperatures rise during the drop, thermal throttling is likely; clocks or power can also fall because of a power limit.
  • If GPU use suddenly falls while CPU, disk, or memory activity rises, look for a competing process or system event.
  • If GPU use is low and FPS is poor, check GPU selection, power mode, and frame caps.

Heat and thermal throttling

When a processor or graphics chip reaches its specified temperature limit, it can reduce power or clock speed to control heat. NVIDIA describes GPU throttling at the maximum specified operating temperature, and Intel lists thermal throttling among causes of reduced gaming performance. Neither source implies one safe or unsafe temperature for every laptop: limits vary by chip and system.

Heat is more likely when FPS starts well and declines over time, clocks fall during the decline, fans surge or fluctuate, or the problem worsens in a warm room. A hot chassis alone does not prove throttling; look for clock or power changes that coincide with the FPS drop.

  1. Shut down and let the laptop cool.
  2. Place it on a hard, flat surface, not a bed or blanket, and clear external intake and exhaust vents.
  3. Use the laptop maker’s fan or performance utility to compare profiles. A less aggressive mode may sustain steadier performance if maximum mode creates excessive heat.
  4. Clean internal fans only if you are comfortable opening the laptop and doing so will not affect warranty coverage; otherwise seek professional cleaning or service.

A cooling pad may help some laptop designs, particularly where it improves airflow into underside intakes, but it is not a guaranteed FPS fix. If the fans fail, make abnormal noises, or clocks continue to collapse under load after vents are clear, contact the laptop maker or a repair professional.

Power, charger, and performance modes

Gaming on battery commonly means less available power and shorter battery life; some supported systems deliberately throttle performance to save power. Windows power modes can affect CPU power behavior, while manufacturer utilities and firmware may control additional fan, thermal, and GPU settings. Higher-performance profiles may raise FPS, but can also increase heat, fan noise, and power use. See Microsoft’s Windows power-slider guidance.

  • Connect the laptop’s original charger or one with the correct rating. A low-wattage USB-C adapter may not support the laptop’s intended gaming performance.
  • For a controlled test, select a performance-oriented Windows mode and the maker’s Performance or Turbo profile, if available. Compare with Balanced or Quiet mode.
  • Check that the charger is recognized and does not disconnect when moved. A loose port, failing adapter, or degraded battery can trigger a power-state change.
  • If an external display is connected, test without it: some laptop designs change display routing or GPU behavior depending on the port and display.

Do not assume the highest performance mode is always best. If aggressive boost produces heat-related clock drops, a less aggressive profile may deliver steadier play. The laptop maker’s utility can also override a Windows setting.

Make sure the game uses the intended GPU

Many laptops combine an integrated GPU, designed for efficient everyday use, with a discrete GPU for demanding games. Hybrid-graphics systems choose between them, and the exact controls vary by laptop, Windows version, driver, and OEM utility. NVIDIA’s Optimus documentation explains how the driver can select integrated or high-performance NVIDIA graphics; its GPU Activity indicator can show which programs are using the discrete GPU.

In Windows 11, assign the game to High performance:

  1. Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
  2. Select the game, or browse to add its executable. The launcher may not be the game executable.
  3. Select Options → High performance → Save, then restart the game.

Microsoft documents per-app choices of “Let Windows decide,” “Power saving,” and “High performance” in its Windows 11 graphics and windowed-game settings. Assign demanding games rather than every application. Some laptops also have a MUX switch or a discrete-GPU-only mode; availability and behavior depend on the model. That mode can improve consistency but generally uses more power and may require a restart.

Drivers, Windows updates, and game patches

Note when the slowdown began. If it followed a graphics-driver update, test a previous known-good version rather than assuming newer is better. If the driver is old or appears damaged, install a suitable version from the laptop maker or GPU maker, then restart. Laptop-maker drivers may better support OEM power management, hotkeys, hybrid graphics, and firmware; GPU-maker drivers may offer newer game support.

  1. Close overlays and monitoring utilities before installing a driver. NVIDIA warns that open GPU-monitoring applications during driver updates can leave games with lower GPU performance or a lower power target: NVIDIA’s driver-update guidance.
  2. Install the relevant driver from the laptop maker or GPU maker and restart. If the problem began with that update, try the previous known-good driver.
  3. Update the affected game. If just one game is slow, verify or repair its files and reset its per-game graphics configuration before changing system-wide settings.
  4. Test without overlays or third-party tuning tools, then add them back one at a time if performance returns.

Intel recommends checking graphics drivers, game patches, background workloads, and game-file integrity when troubleshooting gaming performance; its guidance also supports trying a rollback when a newer driver causes problems: Intel graphics troubleshooting guidance.

Background apps, CPU limits, and memory pressure

During the slowdown, inspect Task Manager’s CPU, Memory, Disk, and GPU activity. Browsers with many tabs, video playback, antivirus scans, updates, cloud sync, launchers, recording or streaming, and overlays can compete with a game. Close optional apps and temporarily disable only the overlay or recording feature you are testing. Avoid disabling antivirus protection or Windows services indiscriminately, and avoid registry cleaners or “RAM booster” tools.

A CPU bottleneck is common in simulation-heavy games, crowded scenes, and high-refresh-rate play. Lowering resolution may not help if the processor cannot prepare frames quickly enough; try reducing crowds, traffic, simulation detail, or view distance instead.

Low available RAM can cause stutter when Windows has to move data to storage. Integrated graphics also shares system memory, so memory configuration can matter more. Intel notes that RAM type and stick configuration can affect performance, with dual-channel memory particularly relevant to integrated graphics: Intel’s memory and graphics guidance. More RAM helps only if capacity or bandwidth is the bottleneck; it will not fix a GPU-limited game. Many laptop models have soldered or partly upgradeable memory, so check the exact model’s specifications before buying.

Game settings, frame caps, and display behavior

Change settings according to the bottleneck rather than setting everything to Low. If GPU-limited, lower resolution or render scale first; disable ray tracing, then test shadows, reflections, volumetrics, and anti-aliasing. Reduce texture quality when video-memory limits or memory pressure are implicated. If CPU-limited, reduce crowd density, traffic, simulation, or view distance. The cost of each setting depends on the game.

Check for an in-game FPS limit, a driver-level limiter, V-Sync, a battery or quiet-mode cap, and the display’s refresh rate. A 30- or 60-FPS ceiling may be an intentional cap, not evidence of failing hardware. A cap just below the display’s refresh rate can improve frame pacing and reduce heat, at the cost of limiting peak FPS. V-Sync can reduce tearing but may add input latency or produce synchronized drops. Variable refresh rate (VRR) can smooth display output on supported hardware, but cannot create frames the GPU has not rendered. Change one synchronization setting at a time.

For compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games, Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations can affect windowed and borderless presentation and support features such as VRR on compatible displays; see Microsoft’s explanation. NVIDIA’s latency guidance notes that V-Sync behavior differs between fullscreen, windowed, and hybrid-laptop configurations: NVIDIA system-latency guidance.

Stutter from shaders, storage, or one game

Not every hitch is overheating. A game may compile shaders after an update, stream assets from storage, or stutter in particular scenes because of its engine. Mods, damaged configuration files, and overlays can also affect one title while other games run normally.

  • Compare a built-in benchmark with ordinary gameplay, or test another map or scene.
  • Notice whether a hitch occurs the first time a particular effect appears; shader compilation may be involved.
  • Check disk activity during the hitch and whether the drive is nearly full or busy with another task.
  • Temporarily remove mods, verify the game files, or reset the game’s graphics configuration.

An SSD can improve loading and may reduce some asset-streaming stutter, but it usually will not raise average FPS when the CPU or GPU is the rendering bottleneck.

Fix the problem in a low-risk order

  1. Determine whether the issue affects every game, one game, battery use, or only longer sessions; note any recent update.
  2. Connect the correct charger, check the power profiles, and repeat the same scene.
  3. Confirm the game executable uses High performance graphics if the laptop has a discrete GPU.
  4. Measure clocks, utilization, temperatures, RAM use, disk activity, and frame times during the drop.
  5. Close optional apps and test without overlays or recording tools.
  6. Update or roll back the driver according to when the issue began; update and repair the affected game if needed.
  7. Improve airflow and test a different fan profile if clocks fall with rising temperatures.
  8. Adjust only the graphics settings associated with the measured bottleneck, then retest.

Change one variable between tests so you can tell what helped. Avoid overclocking or undervolting as first-line fixes: firmware may restrict them, and unstable tuning adds another variable.

When the laptop needs service—or has reached its limits

Contact the laptop maker or a repair professional if the discrete GPU disappears from Device Manager or monitoring tools, the system crashes or shuts down, graphics artifacts appear, fans fail or sound abnormal, the charger or port becomes unusually hot or disconnects, or performance remains poor after a controlled test and appropriate driver installation. These signs can point beyond ordinary settings or game load.

If the GPU is consistently near full use and the game remains slow at settings you consider acceptable, the laptop may simply lack the sustained graphics capability that game requires. Mobile GPUs with the same model name can perform differently because laptop power limits and cooling designs differ. Consider a hardware change, repair, or cloud gaming only after identifying that local rendering capacity—not a wrong setting or fault—is the constraint. Cloud gaming avoids local rendering limits but depends on reliable, low-latency internet and game availability.
