Yes—if “without a graphics card” means without a dedicated card. Legacy Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) can run on some Intel, AMD, and other integrated GPUs, provided the driver and graphics features are supported. A computer with no graphics processor or usable graphics driver is not a practical CS:GO gaming system. Also, Steam’s current Counter-Strike product is Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), a substantially more demanding game, so an old CS:GO result does not prove that the same PC can run CS2.

What “without a graphics card” actually means

A dedicated graphics card is a separate PCIe expansion board such as a GeForce or Radeon. An integrated GPU is built into a processor or motherboard platform and uses system RAM. Both are graphics processors, so a PC can have no dedicated card while still having graphics hardware.

  • No dedicated card, integrated GPU present: Legacy CS:GO may be playable, depending on the exact chip, drivers, memory and cooling.
  • No GPU capability at all: The CPU alone is not a realistic substitute for the supported real-time graphics pipeline a shooter needs.
  • Desktop CPU without integrated graphics: Its motherboard video ports may produce no image unless a dedicated GPU is installed. A port on the motherboard does not guarantee that the processor contains a GPU.

If Windows shows only a generic display driver, that can indicate a missing or incorrect hardware driver—not a useful “GPU-free” gaming mode. Do not rely on software-rendering hacks, random DLLs or modified executables.

Can legacy CS:GO run on integrated graphics?

Often, yes. Archived Steam material for CS:GO lists a DirectX 9-compatible graphics device with at least 256 MB of video memory and Pixel Shader 3.0 support: Valve’s archived CS:GO page. Those specifications belong to the older executable and should not be treated as current CS2 requirements.

“Launches” and “plays well” are different outcomes. An integrated GPU may handle menus, bots and a low-resolution practice session but suffer frame-time spikes during smoke, fire, explosions or crowded fights. Competitive play is especially sensitive to stutter and responsiveness, not just the highest FPS number.

What changes performance on an iGPU?

  • Shared memory: Integrated graphics borrow system RAM rather than using dedicated VRAM. The amount labelled “shared GPU memory” is not equivalent to the same amount of high-speed VRAM on a discrete card.
  • Dual-channel RAM: Integrated GPUs often benefit from two matched memory channels, although the gain varies by platform and workload.
  • Laptop power and cooling: A laptop may reduce CPU/GPU clocks on battery or when hot. A desktop with a similarly named integrated GPU can perform differently because it has more power and cooling headroom.
  • Drivers and game build: A correct, current driver and the exact legacy or current game version matter.

CS:GO versus CS2: why the answer changed

Valve replaced CS:GO as the main Steam product with Counter-Strike 2 on September 27, 2023. The current page describes CS2 as a free upgrade and identifies reviews posted before that date as belonging to “CS:GO, the legacy version”: Counter-Strike 2 on Steam.

That means a search for “CS:GO requirements” can return specifications for an executable that is no longer the primary Steam release. Legacy access, branches and online functionality can change; inspect your Steam installation’s Properties → Betas section rather than trusting an old screenshot or third-party download. Do not assume legacy matchmaking, anti-cheat behaviour or every original mode remains identical to the current service.

Valve’s current CS2 minimum requirements

For Windows, Valve currently lists Windows 10, a CPU with four hardware threads, 8 GB of RAM, a video card with at least 1 GB of memory that supports DirectX 11 and Shader Model 5.0, and 85 GB of storage on the CS2 Steam page: Valve’s CS2 requirements.

The “1 GB” line is not merely a request for a reported memory amount. Feature support matters too: a device can show sufficient shared memory and still lack the required DirectX feature level. Some modern integrated GPUs may launch CS2, but Valve’s specification and the specific iGPU must be checked together; an old CS:GO benchmark is not a CS2 compatibility test.

How to check for integrated graphics in Windows

  1. Task Manager: Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, choose Performance, and look for entries such as Intel UHD, Intel Iris Xe or AMD Radeon Graphics. Watch utilization while the game runs.
  2. Device Manager: Right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters and record the exact adapter name. A warning icon means the driver needs attention.
  3. DirectX Diagnostic Tool: Press Windows + R, enter dxdiag, then inspect the Display or Render tab for the adapter, driver model, feature levels and dedicated/shared memory.

dxdiag identifies hardware and feature information; it does not guarantee a target frame rate.

A responsible low-end performance test

  1. Install the correct Intel, AMD or computer-manufacturer graphics driver.
  2. Plug a laptop into AC power and select its performance power mode.
  3. Close browsers, recording software, launchers and overlays.
  4. Start at fullscreen 1280×720, or a lower 4:3 resolution if necessary.
  5. Set texture, shader, shadow, particle and effect options to Low; disable unnecessary visual effects.
  6. If the PC has both GPUs, assign the game to the intended adapter in Windows Graphics settings.
  7. Test a local practice session and then a real multiplayer match. Observe stutter, frame-time spikes and drops during smoke or combat—not only maximum FPS in an empty area.

For a simple readout, CS:GO may support cl_showfps 1; Steam’s in-game FPS counter is another option. These are measurement aids, not performance fixes, and command or menu availability can differ between legacy CS:GO and CS2.

If the game will not launch

  1. Confirm that a real adapter appears under Display adapters.
  2. Install the correct graphics driver and restart Windows.
  3. In Steam, verify the game files.
  4. Remove unofficial launch options and custom configurations.
  5. Reset video settings using the game’s reset option or Steam’s file-verification process.
  6. Check that the hardware supports the DirectX feature level required by the version you are launching.
  7. If a dedicated card has failed, connect the monitor to the motherboard output only when the CPU provides integrated graphics and that path is enabled in firmware.
  8. If Steam is launching CS2, compare the PC with Valve’s current CS2 requirements rather than archived CS:GO specifications.

When a dedicated GPU or new system makes sense

  • The computer has no usable integrated GPU.
  • The iGPU cannot maintain stable frame times even at low settings.
  • You want CS2, 1080p resolution, a high-refresh display or consistent competitive performance.
  • The laptop is thermally throttling, or single-channel memory cannot be upgraded.
  • The system fails CS2’s DirectX 11 and Shader Model 5.0 graphics requirement.

For a desktop, compare current entry-level products on the official NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon pages. If replacing the whole machine, review integrated-graphics platforms from AMD Ryzen and Intel. Pricing varies by model, region, stock and promotions, so diagnose the actual limitation before buying.

A RAM upgrade can help an integrated GPU when the system is short of memory or limited to one channel. Check compatibility through vendors such as Crucial or Kingston, but RAM cannot add missing graphics features, cure severe thermal limits or turn an unsupported system into a CS2 machine.

Valve’s Steam page displayed a US $14.99 Prime Status Upgrade signal when captured, but that is a region- and date-specific storefront price. Prime status does not improve GPU performance or fix launch failures.

Bottom line

Legacy CS:GO can run without a dedicated graphics card when a supported integrated GPU, proper driver, adequate memory and reasonable cooling are present. It cannot realistically run with no graphics hardware at all. Because Steam now centres on CS2, identify the exact game first: CS2 has a Windows minimum of 8 GB RAM and a DirectX 11/Shader Model 5.0 video card with at least 1 GB listed memory. Test your integrated graphics at low settings, judge stability rather than a peak FPS number, and upgrade only when the hardware—not a missing tweak—is the real bottleneck.
