Yes, Hyper-V can affect gaming, but there is no universal FPS penalty. The setting called “Hyper-V” is often shorthand for several Windows components: the Windows hypervisor, Virtual Machine Platform, Virtualization-Based Security (VBS), and Memory Integrity (HVCI). A hypervisor can remain active even when no virtual machine is open.
The practical effect depends on your CPU, game, graphics settings, security configuration, background workloads, and whether the game is CPU- or GPU-limited. Older processors can see a larger VBS/Memory Integrity overhead; Microsoft says newer Intel processors with MBEC and AMD Zen 2 or newer processors with GMET handle Memory Integrity more efficiently. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish one FPS-loss percentage for every PC.
What “Hyper-V” means on a gaming PC
These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable:
| Component | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hardware virtualization | Intel VT-x or AMD SVM/AMD-V in firmware. It provides CPU support; enabling it does not by itself prove that Windows is running a hypervisor. |
| Windows hypervisor | The low-level virtualization layer used by Hyper-V and several Windows security and platform features. |
| Hyper-V | Microsoft’s virtualization platform, including virtual-machine services, management tools, and virtual networking. |
| VBS | Virtualization-Based Security, which uses the hypervisor to isolate security-sensitive operations. |
| Memory Integrity (HVCI) | A VBS feature that isolates kernel-mode code-integrity checks. Microsoft also calls it Hypervisor-protected Code Integrity. |
| Virtual Machine Platform | An optional Windows component used by WSL2 and other virtualization scenarios. |
Windows Sandbox, WSL2, Docker configurations, Credential Guard, Android emulators, and virtual machines can also depend on the hypervisor. The relationship is broadly:

Not every installation uses every layer. Disabling one visible checkbox therefore may not stop the hypervisor.
How Hyper-V can change game performance
Average FPS may barely move
GPU-bound games at high resolution often have little practical difference because the graphics card, rather than Windows virtualization overhead, limits frame rate. A virtual machine that is actually running is different: it consumes processor time, memory, storage bandwidth, and sometimes GPU resources directly.
Frame-time consistency can matter more than the average
A configuration can show similar average FPS while producing worse 1% lows, 0.1% lows, frame-time spikes, or input latency. This is most noticeable in high-refresh competitive games, CPU-bound titles, and systems with limited thermal or power headroom. Hyper-V does not always harm lows; the point is that averages alone can hide a reproducible stutter problem.

- CPU architecture, generation, firmware, and laptop power limits
- Whether VBS and Memory Integrity are enabled
- Virtual Machine Platform or another dependent feature
- Game engine, patch, resolution, graphics settings, and frame-rate target
- Background virtual machines or containers
- Anti-cheat and low-level driver behavior
- Thermal state and competing background applications
Microsoft specifically notes that older processors can incur more Memory Integrity overhead, while newer Intel CPUs with MBEC and AMD Zen 2-or-newer CPUs with GMET process it more efficiently. That means “Hyper-V costs X%” is not a reliable general claim.

How to check whether the Windows hypervisor is active
System Information
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
msinfo32.exeand press Enter. - In System Summary, inspect the details pane.
- Find A hypervisor has been detected. Features required for Hyper-V will not be displayed.
This is Microsoft’s documented indication that the hypervisor is running: Hyper-V and third-party virtualization troubleshooting.
Windows Security
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Device security.
- Open Core isolation details.
- Check the Memory integrity toggle.
Memory Integrity is HVCI, not the entire Hyper-V platform. The Windows Security path is documented by Microsoft Support.
PowerShell
Run PowerShell as administrator:
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_DeviceGuard -Namespace rootMicrosoftWindowsDeviceGuard
Review fields such as VirtualizationBasedSecurityStatus, SecurityServicesRunning, SecurityServicesConfigured, and AvailableSecurityProperties. Field availability and values vary by Windows edition, build, and policy. See Microsoft’s VBS documentation.

Do not change BIOS settings first. Establish a baseline, alter one layer, and measure the games you actually play.
- Record the current hypervisor, VBS, and Memory Integrity status.
- Use the same Windows build, GPU driver, game patch, resolution, refresh rate, graphics settings, power plan, overlays, save, and repeatable route.
- Run the same benchmark at least three times. Record average FPS, 1% lows, 0.1% lows when the run is long enough, frame-time graphs, CPU and GPU utilization, clocks, and measured input latency if available.
- Turn off Memory integrity only, restart, and repeat the runs.
- Turn Memory Integrity back on. If necessary, disable the Hyper-V hypervisor or a related optional feature, restart, and repeat.
- Compare the spread between repeated runs. A change smaller than normal run-to-run variation is not meaningful.
- Restore the setting that does not produce a consistent benefit.
A large FPS increase in a GPU-bound game deserves skepticism unless utilization and controlled conditions support it. Laptop power and temperature variation can be larger than the effect you are trying to measure.

How to disable Memory Integrity for a test
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Device security → Core isolation details.
- Set Memory integrity to Off.
- Restart Windows.
- Recheck
msinfo32.exeand repeat the identical game test.
Turning it off reduces protection against malicious or vulnerable kernel-mode drivers. Windows may display a security warning; that warning is expected. If Memory Integrity will not enable again, Microsoft recommends updating or removing the incompatible driver or application. Managed systems may enforce the setting through Group Policy, Intune, or another organizational policy.
How to disable the Hyper-V hypervisor
Control Panel
- Open Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Hyper-V → Hyper-V Platform.
- Clear Hyper-V Hypervisor.
- Restart Windows.
PowerShell
Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Microsoft-Hyper-V-Hypervisor
Run the command in an elevated PowerShell window, then restart.
DISM
DISM /Online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:Microsoft-Hyper-V-Hypervisor
Run it from an elevated Command Prompt, then restart. These procedures are documented at Microsoft’s Hyper-V troubleshooting page.
If msinfo32 still reports a hypervisor, Memory Integrity, Credential Guard, Virtual Machine Platform, Windows Sandbox, WSL2, or an organizational policy may still be starting it. Turning off only the Hyper-V checkbox is not guaranteed to disable VBS.
Should you disable Intel VT-x or AMD SVM in BIOS?
Usually, no. BIOS virtualization is the hardware capability; disabling it is a much broader change than testing Memory Integrity or the Windows hypervisor. It can break or disable Hyper-V, WSL2, Docker, Windows Sandbox, Android emulators, virtual machines, and VBS-related protections.

When leaving Hyper-V and VBS enabled is the better choice
- You use WSL2, Docker, Windows Sandbox, Android emulators, or virtual machines.
- The PC handles work, school, remote access, sensitive accounts, or business data.
- The computer is managed by an organization.
- Your games are GPU-bound and testing shows no repeatable problem.
- You value kernel and credential protections more than a possible small performance change.
Consider a temporary Memory Integrity test when an older-CPU system has reproducible CPU-bound stutter, an incompatible driver is identified, or a controlled benchmark shows a meaningful frame-time improvement. Consider disabling the hypervisor for a gaming profile only when third-party virtualization software needs direct hardware access or a measured improvement justifies restarting between gaming and virtualization configurations.
Common problems after changing the settings
The hypervisor remains active
Check Memory Integrity, Credential Guard, Virtual Machine Platform, WSL2, Sandbox, policy settings, and whether you actually restarted. Microsoft identifies Memory Integrity and Credential Guard as technologies that depend on Hyper-V.
Memory Integrity will not turn on
An incompatible or outdated driver, utility, policy, UEFI lock, or unsupported hardware can block it. Use the Windows Security message to identify the driver, then update or remove the associated software or device.
VMware or VirtualBox becomes slower
Third-party virtualization software may fail to start or fall back to slower emulation when Hyper-V controls the virtualization hardware. That behavior does not prove that games will gain the same amount of performance when Hyper-V is disabled.

A game or anti-cheat reports a conflict
Kernel anti-cheat drivers, vulnerable-driver blocking, virtual-machine detection, emulators, and outdated low-level utilities can all be involved. Check the current game or anti-cheat vendor documentation before reducing Windows security. Do not assume that every game forbids or requires Hyper-V.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 scope
The same architecture and diagnostic concepts apply to supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations, but available features, policy defaults, drivers, and labels vary by edition and build. On work or school PCs, administrator policy may prevent permanent changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Hyper-V lower FPS when no virtual machine is open?
It can, because the Windows hypervisor may remain active for VBS, Memory Integrity, Credential Guard, or platform features. The effect is workload- and hardware-dependent, so measure average FPS and frame-time consistency rather than assuming a fixed loss.
Is VBS the same as Hyper-V?
No. Hyper-V is a virtualization platform; VBS is a security architecture that uses the hypervisor, and Memory Integrity/HVCI is one VBS feature.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will disabling Hyper-V break WSL2?
It can. WSL2 and other virtualization-dependent features may stop working or require reconfiguration when the hypervisor or Virtual Machine Platform is disabled.
How do I turn everything back on?
Re-enable Memory Integrity in Windows Security, restore the Hyper-V Hypervisor optional feature, restart, and confirm the result in msinfo32.exe. Restore Intel VT-x or AMD SVM in BIOS only if you previously disabled it.
