How to Exit a Game on Oculus Quest 2 (Meta Quest 2): Step-by-Step Guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To exit a game on a Meta Quest 2, press the Meta/Oculus button once on the right controller. Select the current game or app card, then choose Quit, Close, or X—the wording depends on your Horizon OS interface. A quick press opens the system interface; holding the button can recenter your view instead.

Older Quest 2 software uses a Universal Menu with Quit or Exit to Home. Newer software uses the Navigator, where you may need to select the running game before its close control appears. Meta reported the redesigned Navigator rolling out to Quest users on August 16, 2026 (Meta community announcement).

Quickest method for a responsive game

  1. Pause or save the game if its own menu offers that option.
  2. Press the Meta/Oculus button once. It is the Meta-logo button on the right Touch controller; older guides call it the Oculus button.
  3. Select the game in the system card or recent-app view.
  4. Choose Quit, Close, or X, then confirm if prompted.

The Meta button normally opens Quest’s system interface; it does not necessarily terminate the game. Quest can display Home, Navigator, or a 2D app over an immersive title while leaving that title suspended (Meta’s multitasking explanation).

Quitting through the older Quest 2 menu

If your headset still shows the traditional Universal Menu, use this path:

  1. Pause the game when possible.
  2. Press the Meta/Oculus button briefly on the right controller.
  3. Find the current game’s system card.
  4. Select Quit. Some older documentation labels this Exit to Home (Meta developer discussion).
  5. Confirm, if Quest asks, and wait for Home or the app library to appear.

A Quest 2 user guide also describes pressing the Oculus button and selecting Quit (Quest 2 user guide).

Quitting with the newer Navigator interface

Current software may not display a large Quit button immediately. Navigator exposes recent and running apps differently, so the close command can appear only after you select the game.

  1. Press the Meta button once.
  2. If Navigator is collapsed, point at or select its navigation indicator to reveal it.
  3. Open the current or recent-app list.
  4. Select the game’s icon or app card.
  5. Choose the control shown for that app: Close, X, Quit, or an equivalent label.
  6. Verify that the game disappears from the active-app view or that Quest returns to Home.

Meta can change Navigator’s layout through Horizon OS updates, so do not rely on a fixed corner or position. The function is consistent: select the running game first, then use its displayed close command. Independent coverage describes the same Navigator flow (Android Central).

Use the game’s own exit menu when possible

Many games provide a safer route for saving, leaving multiplayer sessions, or returning to a lobby.

  1. Press the button assigned by that game to Pause, Menu, or Settings. It may be B, Y, a thumbstick click, or another control; there is no universal assignment.
  2. Select Quit, Exit, Leave Game, Return to Lobby, or Main Menu.
  3. Confirm any warning.
  4. If the game reaches only its title screen, press the Meta/Oculus button and close the app at system level.

For online games, use a game-provided Leave Match or Exit Session command first when available to reduce the chance of an abrupt disconnect.

Returning to Home versus fully closing the game

Goal Action
Open system controls Press the Meta/Oculus button once.
Temporarily view Home or Navigator Open the system interface; the game may remain suspended.
Resume the game Select its active or recent app card again.
Fully close an immersive game Select the game card and choose Quit, Close, or X.
Close Browser or another 2D app Use that window’s own X/Close control.

Seeing Home does not prove that the game has been terminated. If you need to free the app for another demanding VR title, select the game card and close it explicitly.

How to close Browser and other 2D apps

Browser, Settings, Store pages, video players, and other flat windows use window controls rather than an immersive game’s exit flow.

  1. Select the 2D window.
  2. Reveal its controls if the title bar or dock is hidden.
  3. Select X or Close on the window.
  4. Press the Meta button again if you only want to hide Navigator, not close the window.

Meta documents separate 2D-window controls in the Quest system experience (Meta system-experience announcement). Reports that double-pressing reveals or hides a 2D-app dock are version-dependent, not a universal Quest 2 exit command (user report).

If the Meta button does nothing

  1. Release the button completely and press it once quickly again. A community report documents a Quest 2 menu issue resolved by a quick press (Meta community discussion).
  2. Check that the right controller is tracking and connected. Try the other controller or hand tracking if enabled.
  3. Use the game’s Pause or Menu command.
  4. If the system interface appears, select the game from recent apps rather than searching only for the old Quit button.
  5. Restart the headset only if the game or Navigator remains frozen or unresponsive.

Holding the Meta/Oculus button can recenter the view on some software versions. If your viewpoint shifts, release it, reorient yourself, and tap briefly instead. Independent guidance also warns against using a long press as the normal exit action (Position Is Everything).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Holding the Meta button instead of tapping it.
  • Assuming the game closed just because Home appeared.
  • Looking for the old Quit button without selecting the app in Navigator.
  • Confusing a Browser or Settings window with the immersive game.
  • Restarting before trying the game’s own save and exit menu.
  • Assuming B, Y, or a thumbstick click has the same menu function in every title.

Frequently asked questions

Can I quit without losing progress?

Progress handling is game-specific. Use the game’s save, lobby, or exit command before closing through Navigator whenever possible.

Is the Oculus button now called the Meta button?

Yes. “Oculus button” is the older name for the Meta-logo system button on the relevant Quest controller.

Why is there no Quit button?

Your Quest 2 may be using Navigator. Select the current or recent game first; its Close, X, or Quit control is often revealed at that stage.

How do I exit a frozen game?

Try a brief Meta-button press, then the recent-app close control. If the system UI will not respond, restart the headset as a recovery step.
