Start with a Windows restart, then repair Alienware Command Center Package Manager instead of immediately reinstalling AWCC. If it still fails, enable Microsoft Store updates, install the BIOS and drivers listed for your exact Dell Service Tag, and use Dell’s clean uninstall/reinstall procedure. AWCC 5.x and 6.x packages are model-specific, so do not use a generic installer.
Identify what “not loading” means
| Symptom | Likely path |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens after clicking AWCC | Restart Windows, check for a stuck process, then repair Package Manager. |
| Splash screen never finishes or the app closes | Repair first; update BIOS and drivers, then clean-reinstall if necessary. |
| Blank window or missing lighting, fan, thermal, or performance controls | Check components, firmware, drivers, and model feature support. |
| “Additional components are required” | Enable Microsoft Store app updates and allow the component download to finish. |
| Installer stops at “Preparing to install” or shows error 1603 | Use the clean-boot and software-conflict procedure below. |
| AWCC opens but cannot see a computer or accessory | Treat this as detection or compatibility failure, not a launch failure. |
Try the low-risk fixes first
- Restart Windows and launch AWCC from the Start menu.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If an Alienware Command Center process or clearly identified AWCC installer is frozen, select only that process and choose End task. Do not disable arbitrary Dell services.
- Sign in with an administrator account before repairing or reinstalling.
- Install pending Windows updates, then retry AWCC.
Repair AWCC Package Manager without uninstalling
Dell’s supported repair route can restore individual features while avoiding a full removal.
- Open Windows Search and search for Apps & features. On some Windows 11 builds this is called Installed apps.
- Search for Alienware Command Center Package Manager.
- Select it, choose Modify, and select Repair.
- Choose the features the wizard offers to reinstall and complete it.
- Restart Windows if prompted, then launch AWCC.
See Dell’s AWCC 6.x repair instructions at Dell Support. The AWCC 5.x interface is documented here.
Install AWCC’s Microsoft Store components
The main package can be present while Store-delivered AWCC components are missing.

On a work or school computer where Store updates are blocked by policy, contact the administrator rather than bypassing that policy. Dell describes this component workflow in its Microsoft Store guidance.
Update the BIOS, drivers, and model-specific AWCC package
- Open Dell Support and identify the computer by Service Tag, Express Service Code, serial number, or model.
- Open Drivers & Downloads, select the installed Windows version, and set the category to Application.
- Download the AWCC package offered for that exact system. Also check BIOS, chipset, graphics, and relevant device-driver updates.
- Install the BIOS only when the package is intended for your model and keep the computer connected to reliable power.
Dell’s AWCC 6.x prerequisites and download steps are documented in its installation guide and package-download guide. Do not assume the newest number is universal: Dell support material contains version- and model-specific notices, including AWCC 6.1.11.0 and 6.6.14.0 issues.
Perform a clean AWCC uninstall and reinstall
Profile warning: Dell’s cleanup removes folders that can contain AlienFX, TactX, lighting, macro, fan, thermal, and performance settings. Photograph or export settings you need to recreate before continuing.

C:Program FilesAlienwareand, on older installations,C:Program Files (x86)Alienware. Delete only the relevant Command Center folder. - In Documents, remove the documented AlienFX and Alienware TactX folders if present.
- Restart Windows again.
Reinstall
- Return to the computer’s Dell Support page, select Windows, choose Application, and download the model-specific AWCC installer.
- Run the downloaded
.exe; use Run as administrator if required. - Allow every additional-component step to complete, restart Windows, and wait for AWCC’s first-run check.
Use Dell’s complete procedure at How to remove and reinstall AWCC.
If installation stops at “Preparing to install” or error 1603
Error 1603 is a generic installation failure, not a single diagnosis. Dell’s conflict-isolation sequence is:
- Perform a Windows clean boot.
- Update the BIOS from the exact Dell Support page.
- Remove AWCC and retry the clean installation.
- Create or use a separate administrator account.
- Temporarily close or uninstall conflicting software such as Corsair iCUE.
- Temporarily disable security software such as McAfee, Norton Utilities, or Kaspersky only for the test; disconnect from unnecessary networks and restore protection immediately afterward.
- Disconnect external or secondary drives.
- For applicable Alienware keyboards and mice, install the Intel HID Event Filter driver.
- Restart and retry the Dell installer.
Follow Dell’s Preparing to install troubleshooting. Do not leave antivirus disabled or assume a named application is permanently incompatible.

An incorrect registry deletion can damage unrelated software or Windows configuration. Dell’s reinstall video shows the advanced cleanup at this support page.

AWCC 5.x, AWCC 6.x, and older systems
Use the version Dell offers for your model. For the Alienware x16 R1, m16 R1, and m18 R1, Dell documents specific AWCC 5.0-to-6.0 upgrade routes through Task Scheduler, Alienware Update, Microsoft Store, or manual installation. That installer removes the older 5.0 version on the affected upgrade path, so do not perform manual cleanup first unless the normal upgrade fails. Dell notes that this particular upgrade can take at least 10–17 minutes; that timing is not a universal installation estimate. See Dell’s upgrade article.
When to contact Dell
Escalate with the exact model, AWCC version, Windows build, start date, installer error, and whether Dell Support or SupportAssist detects the computer when:
- Repair and a clean reinstall both fail.
- Error 1603 persists.
- The BIOS or hardware controls remain missing after updates.
- The problem began immediately after a firmware update.
- The computer is managed by an organization and Store policy cannot be changed.
- A Windows reset appears necessary.
Windows reset or reinstallation is a last resort after repair, current BIOS and drivers, clean reinstall, and conflict isolation have failed. Back up personal data first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is AWCC stuck on loading after a Windows update?
A changed driver, BIOS dependency, or incomplete Store component can cause it. Repair Package Manager, enable Store updates, then install the BIOS and drivers offered for the exact Dell model.
Will a clean reinstall delete my AWCC profiles?
It can. Removing Alienware, AlienFX, or Alienware TactX folders may remove saved lighting, macro, fan, thermal, and performance settings.
Can I install AWCC on a Dell G-series computer?
Some Dell G-series systems are supported, but features vary by model and hardware. Use that computer’s Dell Support page and feature documentation.
Should I delete AWCC registry entries first?
No. Registry removal is an advanced, optional escalation after the documented uninstall fails, with a registry backup made first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
Repair Package Manager before reinstalling. If that fails, use Microsoft Store updates and the BIOS, drivers, and AWCC package Dell lists for your Service Tag; reserve clean-folder and registry removal for a controlled escalation.
