Full answers for Connections #754
Warning: the complete groupings and explanations below spoil the puzzle.
| Color | Connection | Words | Why they fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | What “ID” might refer to | DRIVER LICENSE; FREUDIAN CONCEPT; IDAHO; RECOGNIZE | A driver license is an ID; the Freudian concept is the id; Idaho starts with “ID”; and “recognize” means to identify. |
| Green | What “IN” might refer to | INCH; INDIANA; INSIDE; TRENDY | The first three start with “IN,” while “trendy” can mean “in.” |
| Blue | What “LA” might refer to | LANTHANUM; LOS ANGELES; LOUISIANA; MUSICAL NOTE | Lanthanum has the chemical symbol La; Los Angeles and Louisiana are commonly abbreviated LA; and “la” is a solfège note. |
| Purple | What “OK” might refer to | BRITISH MAGAZINE; GREENLIGHT; MEDIOCRE; OKLAHOMA | OK! is a British magazine; to greenlight something is to approve it; “mediocre” can mean merely OK; and Oklahoma is abbreviated OK. |
How to solve the puzzle’s abbreviation theme
- Test conspicuous beginnings. IDAHO suggests ID, while INCH, INDIANA and INSIDE visibly suggest IN.
- Check whether a short string has several meanings. “LA” can be a chemical symbol, a place abbreviation or a musical note.
- Use semantics on the leftovers. TRENDY supplies the nonliteral “in,” GREENLIGHT supplies approval, and MEDIOCRE supplies “OK.”
- Confirm all four members before submitting. The intended categories mix literal letter starts, abbreviations, proper-name shorthand and synonyms, so a pair or trio alone is not enough.
Why #754 felt difficult
TechRadar’s dated guide characterized game #754 as unusually hard and reported that its writer failed to solve it, noting that every color group felt tough. The difficulty comes from the uniform two-letter mechanism: once you spot one abbreviation, several alternatives still look plausible, and the final entries rely on meanings rather than identical word forms.
