You can connect an Oculus Quest—now branded Meta Quest—to a Mac for file transfers, APK sideloading, development, and casting. A Mac is not normally a supported host for Quest Link or Air Link PC VR gaming, however. Choose the goal first, then use the matching method below.
Choose the right connection method
| Goal | Best Mac method | Cable? | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Copy photos or videos | SideQuest file manager or a Quest file-transfer utility | Usually | Authorize USB access in the headset |
| Install APKs or experimental apps | SideQuest desktop app | Usually | Developer mode and USB debugging are required |
| Run ADB commands | Android platform tools, SideQuest, or Meta developer tools | Usually | The Quest must appear as an authorized ADB device |
| See the Quest display on your Mac | Quest casting in a browser | No, normally Wi-Fi | This mirrors the display; it is not PC VR |
| Play PC VR games | A compatible Windows PC using Quest Link or Air Link | Often | macOS is not the normal supported host |
| Charge only | Any suitable USB-C power connection | No data needed | Charging does not prove data connectivity |
“Oculus Quest” is the former name for the Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest Pro and related headsets. Horizon OS updates can move settings or change their wording, so labels below may differ slightly on your version.
Connect Quest to a Mac for file transfer
SideQuest provides a Mac desktop installer and tools for managing Quest files and apps. Its setup page is https://side.quest/setup-howto. A direct USB connection is generally more dependable than a hub during initial setup.
What you need
- A Quest headset that is switched on and unlocked.
- A Mac running a version supported by the current SideQuest installer.
- A USB-C cable rated for data, not only charging.
- The SideQuest desktop application.
Steps
- Install SideQuest for Mac from SideQuest’s official setup page.
- Connect the headset directly to the Mac with the USB-C data cable.
- Put on the headset immediately. Accept the prompt allowing USB data access.
- If a separate USB debugging prompt appears, authorize it only if you need developer or ADB features.
- Open SideQuest and wait for its connection indicator to show the headset.
- Open the file-management view and browse the required folders.
- Use
DCIMfor screenshots and camera captures,Moviesfor videos, andPicturesfor images copied to the headset. - Copy files, wait for the transfer to finish, then disconnect.
The Quest may not mount as a normal Finder disk. That is expected for many Android-style MTP connections; SideQuest or another compatible utility can still access the files.

Finder-style alternative
FilePort for Meta Quest Sync advertises Finder integration, browsing, uploads, downloads and folder management. It is a third-party Mac utility, listed as Free with In-App Purchases in the U.S. Mac App Store; check the live listing for current purchase amounts.
Install APKs and use ADB from macOS
Ordinary file permission and USB debugging are separate. APK installation requires the current Meta developer enrollment workflow, developer mode enabled for the headset, and USB debugging authorization.
SideQuest procedure
- Install SideQuest for Mac.
- Enable developer access for the headset through Meta’s current developer process.
- Connect the Quest with a known-good USB data cable.
- Put on the headset and approve the USB debugging dialog.
- Confirm the headset is detected in SideQuest.
- Choose the APK-install option and select a compatible APK.
- When installation completes, look in the headset’s Unknown Sources or equivalent app-library category. The exact label can change with Horizon OS.
An APK must target the Quest’s Android/Horizon OS environment. Sideloading does not turn a Mac into a PC VR computer, and unofficial software can introduce security, privacy, stability or account risks.
Optional command-line ADB
Install Android platform tools separately; macOS does not include ADB by default. Then use:

adb devices
An authorized Quest appears in the list. unauthorized means you must approve the debugging prompt inside the headset.
adb install /path/to/app.apk
adb push /path/to/file.mp4 /sdcard/Movies/
adb pull /sdcard/DCIM/filename.jpg ~/Downloads/
These commands require an authorized ADB connection and a compatible APK or file path.
Cast the Quest display to your Mac
Casting is the right choice when you want someone else to watch the headset view or you want to record it on the Mac. It does not provide USB file access or PC VR rendering.
- Connect the Mac and Quest to the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open a supported browser and go to Meta’s current Quest casting page.
- Sign in with the Meta account linked to the headset if requested.
- Put on the headset and open its sharing or camera controls.
- Select Cast and follow the pairing instructions for the browser.
- Resize the browser window or record it with macOS screen-recording software.
Casting introduces delay, can have variable audio, and depends on network quality. The mirrored image may not exactly match both eyes’ view. The web address and menu names can change, so use Meta’s current casting destination rather than an outdated bookmark.

Can you use Quest Link or Air Link with a Mac?
Not as the normal supported consumer workflow. Quest Link and Air Link are designed to connect the headset to a compatible Windows PC running the PC VR host software. SideQuest’s official setup page explicitly labels its desktop streaming feature “Windows Only”: https://side.quest/setup-howto.
An Apple-silicon Mac’s raw performance does not change the software situation. Graphics APIs, drivers, anti-cheat systems and application compatibility are separate from hardware speed. Do not assume that an M-series Mac can run SteamVR or Quest PC VR simply because it is powerful.
If PC VR is the actual goal, use a compatible Windows gaming PC. Your Mac can still prepare files, manage development content, cast the headset, or remotely control a Windows machine; the Windows computer must perform the VR rendering.
Fix a Quest that only charges
A charging-only cable, failed adapter, unreliable hub or denied accessory permission can provide power without data.

- Unlock the Mac and approve the accessory if macOS asks. Apple documents that Apple-silicon Mac laptops may require approval for new or unknown USB accessories; denying it can still allow charging without normal data access: https://support.apple.com/en-mide/102282.
- Disconnect both ends and reconnect directly to the Mac and headset.
- Put on the headset and accept its USB data-access prompt.
- Try another known-good USB-C data cable and another Mac port.
- Bypass hubs, battery straps and accessory ports during testing.
- Close SideQuest, Android Studio, Android File Transfer and other ADB tools, then reopen only the tool you need.
- Restart both devices if no prompt appears.
Meta community guidance notes that some bundled or third-party cables are intended mainly for charging and may not carry data. It also discusses a USB/MTP notification setting, but menu wording can change. See this Meta community reply and additional troubleshooting guidance.

SideQuest does not see the headset
- Confirm you installed the Mac desktop application, not only a browser interface.
- Wake and unlock the headset, then reconnect while wearing it.
- Accept USB data access and USB debugging separately.
- Confirm developer mode remains enabled if you use ADB features.
- Revoke and reauthorize USB debugging if authorization is stuck, where that option exists in your current software.
- Close competing ADB applications, restart SideQuest, and test another cable and port.
No Finder volume appears
Finder visibility is not a universal success test. MTP and ADB devices often need a specialized application rather than mounting as a disk. Use SideQuest or a compatible file-transfer utility instead.
Transfers stop midway
- Keep the headset awake and transfer smaller batches.
- Do not transfer while recording, updating or nearly out of storage.
- Use a direct connection and verify the destination is writable.
- Copy first, verify the files, and delete the originals only afterward.
- Never disconnect during an active transfer.
Best method for each use case
- Photos and videos: SideQuest or a dedicated file-transfer utility with a data-rated USB-C cable.
- APK sideloading and development: SideQuest plus developer mode and USB debugging; use ADB when you need scripting.
- Demonstrations and recording: Casting over the same Wi-Fi network.
- PC VR gaming: A compatible Windows PC with Quest Link or Air Link, not a Mac-only setup.
- Occasional drag-and-drop: A Finder-oriented third-party utility may be simpler, but it is not an official Meta component.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect Quest 2 to a MacBook?
Yes. Use a USB-C data cable with SideQuest or another compatible utility for files and developer tasks, or use casting over Wi-Fi. A MacBook is not normally the Quest Link PC VR host.
Do I need Meta’s official Link cable?
No for ordinary file transfer or ADB. You do need a reliable USB-C cable that supports data; a charging-only cable will not work for those tasks.
