Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Smoother gaming is about consistent frame times, low input latency and stable performance—not just a larger average-FPS number. The safest Windows 11 process is to measure a repeatable baseline, update drivers, configure power and graphics settings, reduce competing workloads, then test one change at a time. No single Windows switch guarantees a universal FPS increase.
What “smooth” gaming actually means
Average FPS tells you how many frames are rendered over time, but it can hide pauses between frames. Check frame-time graphs and 1% lows as well as average FPS. Also distinguish input latency, display latency, shader-compilation stutter, loading time and network latency. A high counter cannot fix a game that has shader spikes, thermal throttling, insufficient VRAM, a CPU limit, storage problems, a driver regression or network lag.
Measure before changing anything
Use the same benchmark, replay, route or game scene for every comparison. Record:
- Resolution, graphics preset, upscaling, ray tracing and frame generation
- Display refresh rate and fullscreen, borderless or windowed mode
- Average FPS, 1% lows and a frame-time graph
- GPU utilization, clock, temperature and VRAM use
- CPU utilization by core, clock and temperature
- System RAM use, background recording and overlays
Run each test at least twice because shader caching and background activity can affect the first run. Change one setting at a time, restart after Windows graphics or driver changes, and keep a simple before-and-after log.

Update Windows and every relevant driver
- Open Start → Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.
- Open Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates and review driver updates. Do not install an optional package blindly if your laptop or handheld maker supplies a validated version.
- Install GPU drivers from the official vendor: NVIDIA GeForce drivers, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition or Intel Driver & Support Assistant.
- Also check chipset, storage, Wi-Fi, platform and OEM power-management drivers.
NVIDIA calls its Game Ready packages game-focused, WHQL-certified drivers; that is NVIDIA’s description, not a promise that every update improves every game (NVIDIA Game Ready Drivers). A newer driver can regress a particular title. If stutter starts immediately after an update, test the previous known-good package. Avoid third-party driver boosters, and do not update BIOS solely for FPS unless its release notes identify a relevant fix.
Choose an appropriate power mode
Go to Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode. Best performance is reasonable on a desktop or a laptop or handheld connected to AC power when heat, noise and battery life are secondary. Microsoft warns that it uses more power and can make a laptop warmer and drain faster (Microsoft performance guidance).
It is not a guaranteed FPS setting. If the GPU is already limiting performance, CPU power changes may do little. On a poorly cooled laptop, higher limits can cause thermal throttling and reduce sustained performance. Use the manufacturer’s performance, wattage, fan and MUX/graphics-switching controls where provided.
Turn on Game Mode
Open Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and leave it On by default. Game Mode prioritizes gaming activity and limits some competing background work; it does not add a fixed percentage of FPS. Microsoft documents it as separate from the Windows power slider (Game Mode reference; power slider behavior).

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
If one game becomes unstable or stutter worsens after an update, test Game Mode off for that title or session. Do not casually disable Windows Security, Windows Update, anti-cheat, audio, networking, controller, GPU-driver, Xbox or OEM thermal services.
Make each game use the right GPU
This is often more important than cosmetic “debloat” tweaks on hybrid laptops, handhelds and systems with multiple adapters.
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Select Add an app and choose the actual game executable, not only its launcher.
- Select the game, choose Options → High performance → Save.
- Restart the game.
A launcher may start a separate executable, and OEM utilities can override or supplement Windows’ choice. A discrete GPU can render the game while the integrated GPU remains physically connected to the laptop display. High-performance selection also increases heat and power use.
Configure Windows Graphics settings deliberately
Optimizations for windowed games
Microsoft’s feature targets compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless modes. It can reduce presentation latency through a newer presentation path, but it is not a universal FPS boost or a replacement for exclusive fullscreen. Find it under Settings → System → Display → Graphics and test it per game (Microsoft: Optimizations for windowed games; DirectX Graphics settings explanation). Restart the game after changing it. Disable it for a specific title if flicker, crashes, stutter, HDR changes or overlay problems appear.

Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
HAGS moves much of GPU scheduling to dedicated scheduling hardware and may reduce CPU scheduling overhead (Microsoft DirectX explanation). Availability depends on Windows, the driver and the GPU. Test it on and off with the same benchmark, restart Windows after changing it, and keep the result with better frame-time consistency and stability. GPU generation, API, frame generation, capture software and multi-monitor setups can all change the outcome.
Auto HDR and Auto SR
Auto HDR can improve image quality in supported older games, but it does not increase FPS and may cause washed-out colors or flicker on some displays. Auto SR is a separate, hardware-, processor-, driver- and game-dependent feature; it is not a universal Windows upscaler (Microsoft Auto SR requirements).
Set the display refresh rate and VRR correctly
Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display → Choose a refresh rate and select the monitor’s intended rate. A 144Hz panel left at 60Hz feels less responsive even when the game renders many frames.
Enable the monitor’s FreeSync, G-SYNC or Adaptive-Sync mode, then enable the corresponding driver or Windows option. Microsoft describes variable refresh rate as allowing a compatible display to follow the game’s frame rate (DirectX Graphics settings explanation). Confirm the cable and port support the feature. A frame cap slightly below the panel’s maximum can help VRR behavior, but test V-Sync, frame caps and frame generation together rather than assuming one universal recipe. Mixed refresh rates, HDR displays, video playback and hardware-accelerated browsers on a second monitor can introduce problems.

Reduce background load without breaking Windows
Startup and active processes
Open Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Startup apps and disable launchers, updaters, cloud-sync clients, RGB tools or chat apps you do not need at boot. Keep security, cooling, GPU switching, audio, networking, controllers, anti-cheat and OEM power utilities.
In Task Manager → Processes, sort by CPU, Memory, Disk, GPU and GPU engine while the game is running. This identifies the actual offender better than disabling services at random (Microsoft performance guidance).
Background app permissions
For supported Store and Windows apps, use Settings → Apps → Installed apps → More (…) → Advanced options → Background app permissions. Choose Power optimized or Never only when you accept losing notifications or background updates (Microsoft background activity guidance).
Captures and overlays
Game Bar, Steam, Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, browser and third-party overlays can provide monitoring and chat but can also cause latency, frame-time spikes, HDR conflicts or anti-cheat issues. Keep the tools you use; when diagnosing stutter, disable recording and test overlays individually rather than removing every gaming service (Windows gaming settings reference).

Optimize the game before using aggressive Windows tweaks
| Observed limit | Settings to test first |
|---|---|
| GPU utilization near full | Resolution/render scale, ray tracing, shadows, volumetrics, reflections and upscaling |
| CPU or one core near full | Crowd density, simulation detail, view distance and background workloads |
| VRAM nearly full | Texture quality and GPU-accelerated applications running alongside the game |
| Shader-compilation spikes | Let the game finish compiling shaders; avoid repeatedly clearing shader caches without a reason |
| Thermal limit | Improve airflow or reduce power and temperature rather than forcing a higher profile |
Frame generation can raise displayed FPS while adding latency or exposing poor base-frame pacing. Do not use it to mask a severely CPU-limited or stutter-prone game. DirectStorage primarily improves loading in supported games and does not automatically raise rendering FPS (Microsoft gaming-PC guidance).
Diagnose the type of stutter
Shader compilation
Spikes concentrated during a game’s first visit to an area often indicate shader work. Allow the game’s compilation process to finish and keep adequate free space on the game drive.
Thermal throttling
If clocks and FPS fall after several minutes, check temperatures and fan behavior during the actual game. Elevate a laptop, use a suitable cooling surface and return unstable overclocks or undervolts to stock.
VRAM, RAM and storage pressure
Lower textures when VRAM is exhausted. Close GPU-accelerated browser tabs, virtual machines and recording software when system memory is pressured. Keep the Windows and game SSD from becoming nearly full; use Storage Sense and Windows’ built-in drive optimization, not third-party SSD defragmenters (Microsoft performance guidance).
Recommended Free Tools
Driver, game or network problems
Compare behavior after a game patch, Windows update, driver update, BIOS change or display-firmware update. Network lag can look like stutter but will not appear as a local frame-time spike.
Optional diagnostic commands
These commands report system state; they are not magic optimizers:
powercfg /getactiveschemedisplays the active power scheme.powercfg /listlists available schemes.powercfg /batteryreportcreates a battery report on supported systems.powercfg /energycreates an energy diagnostic report and should be run while the PC is idle, not gaming.
Settings not to change blindly
- Registry “FPS tweaks,” timer-resolution tools and hidden power-plan commands
- Windows Security, core services, scheduled tasks or pagefile removal
- Permanent process-priority changes and memory cleaners
- Unverified debloat scripts, driver boosters and SSD optimization utilities
These can break updates, networking, audio, recovery, anti-cheat or Microsoft Store games while offering no established benefit.
Quick Recap
A safe troubleshooting order
- Reboot and reproduce the problem using the same test scene.
- Check temperatures, clocks, utilization and VRAM or RAM use.
- Verify the game’s executable is assigned to the correct GPU.
- Update or roll back the GPU driver.
- Disable recording and overlays one at a time.
- Test Game Mode, HAGS and windowed-game optimizations individually.
- Check refresh rate, VRR, V-Sync and the frame cap.
- Lower the game setting that matches the measured bottleneck.
- Repair or reinstall the game only after these checks.
