For better Windows 11 gaming performance, start with the reversible basics: set the display to its intended refresh rate, choose the discrete GPU for demanding games on hybrid systems, enable Game Mode, stop unused background recording, and use Best performance power mode while plugged in. Then test graphics features such as windowed-game optimizations and hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) one at a time. No Windows switch guarantees more FPS: keep a change only if it improves repeatable results in the game you play.

Measure performance before changing settings

A useful comparison needs the same game, scene, resolution, and in-game settings before and after a change. Average FPS is only part of the picture: frame-time consistency, 1% lows, input latency, temperatures, and sustained clocks can matter more to how a game feels.

  • Record average FPS, 1% lows or another frame-time percentile, and a frame-time graph if available.
  • Note GPU and CPU utilization, temperatures and clocks, plus VRAM and system RAM use.
  • Describe the symptom: low FPS, intermittent stutter, shader-compilation pauses, display judder, or network lag. These have different causes.

Restart before your first run, repeat the same benchmark, replay, or save-point test at least twice, and ignore an initial run if the game is compiling shaders or loading assets. Change one major setting at a time. Test long enough to expose laptop heat or power limits; a brief FPS reading can miss throttling. NVIDIA FrameView is a free option for measuring frame rates, frame times, power, and performance-per-watt: NVIDIA FrameView. Any overlay used to measure performance can itself affect behavior, so keep the measurement setup consistent.

A higher average FPS is not automatically smoother if frame-time spikes get worse. Conversely, a modest FPS change may be worthwhile if frame pacing or 1% lows improve.

Apply the low-risk Windows settings first

Turn on Game Mode

Go to Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and set Game Mode to On. Microsoft describes Game Mode as a way to prioritize supported games and reduce the impact of competing activity, but its benefit depends on the workload; it does not promise a fixed FPS increase. It is more likely to matter when background activity or a low-power system is competing for resources. Microsoft’s developer information is at Game Mode.

If a specific title behaves worse, compare it with Game Mode off using the same test, then keep the better repeatable result. Check overlays and capture settings as well; do not assume Game Mode is the cause based on one run.

Turn off background capture if you do not use it

Open Settings → Gaming → Captures and disable continuous or background recording options you do not need. Capturing clips is useful, but it consumes resources and may complicate troubleshooting. You can keep Xbox Game Bar for screenshots or controller access while turning off recording. Game Bar, Game Mode, and capture functions are separate Windows controls; see Microsoft’s Windows 11 settings reference.

Use Best performance while plugged in

On supported devices, go to Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode and choose Best performance for plugged-in gaming. This can favor performance, but it cannot override cooling, adapter, battery, or OEM limits. Expect more heat, fan noise, and power use; on a laptop, check sustained temperatures rather than judging a brief burst. Microsoft notes that OEMs can tie power-slider behavior to their own thermal and power policies: Customize the Windows performance power slider.

Configure Windows Graphics for each game

Select the high-performance GPU on hybrid systems

On a laptop or PC with integrated and discrete graphics, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics. Under Custom options for apps, add the game if needed, select it, choose Options, then select High performance for a demanding game. Windows also offers Let Windows decide and Power saving. This preference is most useful when Windows was choosing the wrong GPU; it raises power use and heat. Microsoft documents the path and choices on its Windows graphics settings support page.

  • 【Silent Fan Size】 Model: TL-C12C-S X3, Size: 120*120*25mm, Speed: 1550RPM±10%, Noise ≤ 25.6dBA Connector: 4pin pwm, Current: 0.20A, Air Pressure: 1.53mm H2O, Air Flow: 66.17CFM, Higher air flow for improved cooling performance.

Add the actual game executable, not merely its launcher, if the game starts as a separate process. Verify GPU activity after launching rather than assuming the preference took effect. Some laptops also need an OEM graphics mode, MUX switch, or discrete-GPU setting in manufacturer software. If the GPU option is missing, install the correct driver and check the laptop’s graphics mode; do not force it with an unofficial registry tweak.

Test Optimizations for windowed games

On the same Settings → System → Display → Graphics page, enable Optimizations for windowed games under Default settings to try it. Microsoft says it applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless-windowed modes, moving them toward the flip presentation model and potentially enabling features such as VRR and Auto HDR. It is not a universal performance fix.

For a per-game comparison, select the game under Custom options for apps → Options, toggle the optimization for that title, save, and restart the game. Compare frame pacing, latency, VRR behavior, and image output. If you see flicker, incorrect HDR, a black screen, or compatibility trouble, revert the toggle and retest. Details and the restart requirement are on Microsoft’s support page.

Treat HAGS as an experiment

If available, find Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling under Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings. The option only appears when the GPU and driver support it. Microsoft describes HAGS as shifting much of GPU scheduling from the CPU to dedicated GPU hardware; that description does not establish a gaming benefit for every system. See the DirectX graphics settings overview.

  1. Record a baseline with HAGS in its current state.
  2. Toggle it, restart Windows if prompted, and repeat the same game test.
  3. Compare frame pacing, latency, capture or streaming behavior, and stability as well as average FPS.
  4. Revert it if the result is worse or causes crashes or stutter.

GPU architecture, driver, game, overlays, frame generation, and multi-monitor or VRR configurations can all affect the outcome. Do not enable or disable HAGS solely because a generic tweak list says to.

Use Auto HDR for image quality, not FPS

Auto HDR is optional and is primarily a presentation feature: on supported hardware and an HDR display, it can convert supported SDR game output to HDR. Judge it by image quality and compatibility, not as a frame-rate boost. If brightness or colors look wrong, turn it off for that game. Microsoft covers the graphics controls in its graphics settings overview.

Check Automatic Super Resolution only if your device supports it

Automatic Super Resolution is a hardware-, Windows-, and game-dependent feature, not a standard option for every Windows 11 PC. Check Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution documentation for applicable device and compatibility requirements. If it is available, compare image quality, performance, and latency in the specific supported game; do not assume it will appear or help on other hardware.

Set up the display and frame delivery

Choose the intended refresh rate

Go to Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, select the correct monitor, and choose its intended refresh rate. Check this after connecting a high-refresh monitor or changing laptop power settings: a 144 Hz panel can be left at 60 Hz, and a multi-monitor setup can lead you to inspect the wrong display. A cable or adapter may also limit the modes available.

Refresh rate is not the same as rendered FPS. It determines how often the display can update; motion and latency benefit when the game can deliver frames effectively within the display’s capabilities. Check the game’s own refresh-rate or frame-rate cap too.

Enable VRR when the complete setup supports it

FreeSync, G-SYNC, and Adaptive-Sync allow a compatible display to vary its refresh behavior in response to game frame rate. Microsoft describes VRR and related graphics options in its DirectX graphics settings overview. To set it up:

  1. Enable Adaptive-Sync, FreeSync, or G-SYNC in the monitor’s on-screen menu, if offered.
  2. Enable the corresponding feature in the GPU driver software.
  3. Use a compatible display port and cable, and check any relevant Windows graphics option.
  4. Test the game’s V-Sync and frame-limiter settings rather than stacking several limiters blindly.

VRR operates within the display’s supported range; very low frame rates may fall outside it. Behavior can also differ by game, borderless versus fullscreen mode, and multi-monitor setup. Aim for consistent, tear-free delivery rather than the highest counter reading.

Update drivers carefully and keep settings per game

Use official GPU-vendor drivers rather than third-party aggregators. NVIDIA provides GeForce drivers and the NVIDIA App, which includes driver management, per-game controls, recording, and overlays. NVIDIA distinguishes Game Ready drivers, focused on current games and release support, from Studio drivers, aimed primarily at creative applications. AMD and Intel users should use the official support and driver tools for their exact GPU model.

A newer driver is not automatically better for every older game. If problems begin immediately after an update, consider returning to the prior driver or checking the laptop maker’s package. Reserve clean installation for a specific troubleshooting reason, and save custom profiles first. In NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel software, prefer per-game profiles and avoid forcing several frame caps, V-Sync modes, sharpening options, and latency features at once. NVIDIA’s current control and feature details are on its NVIDIA App release highlights page.

Make game-level adjustments when Windows is not the bottleneck

Windows settings cannot turn a GPU-limited system into a faster graphics card. In-game graphics changes often have a larger effect than operating-system tweaks. Tune in this order, then repeat your baseline test:

  1. Keep texture quality high if VRAM use leaves enough headroom; lower it if VRAM is full or streaming stutters occur.
  2. Reduce ray tracing and expensive lighting effects first if the GPU is saturated.
  3. Then test shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ambient occlusion, and crowd or view-distance settings.
  4. Try the game’s DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or other upscaling option before making a large sacrifice to output resolution.
  5. Use a stable frame cap if uncapped delivery causes inconsistent pacing. Check for conflicting game, driver, and overlay limiters.
  6. Treat frame generation as a latency and image-quality trade-off, not simply free FPS; consider the game’s Reflex or equivalent latency controls where available.

If GPU use stays near full, reduce GPU-heavy settings or resolution. If the CPU is the limit, reduce simulation, crowd, or view-distance demands and close competing workloads. Low CPU and GPU use alongside stutter can point to shader compilation, asset streaming, storage, overlays, or frame pacing instead. A decline after several minutes suggests checking temperatures, clocks, power limits, and cooling.

If FPS is low

Check whether the GPU is near full utilization. If so, reduce rendering resolution, ray tracing, or other GPU-heavy settings. If the CPU is limiting performance, adjust simulation-heavy settings and competing workloads. Confirm the game is using the intended GPU before changing Windows power or driver settings.

If frame pacing stutters

Compare the frame-time graph, test windowed-game optimizations on and off for a compatible title, and temporarily disable overlays or recording. Shader compilation and asset streaming can make an initial run unrepresentative. If stutter starts after changing a setting, revert that setting and repeat the same scenario.

If borderless mode feels worse

Compare borderless with exclusive fullscreen if the game offers it. Test windowed-game optimizations and VRR both ways, and avoid running multiple frame caps. Borderless is not always slower or always better.

If the game crashes or becomes unstable

  1. Undo the most recent graphics or driver setting change and restart the game.
  2. Reboot Windows if the change involved HAGS, display presentation, or a driver.
  3. Temporarily disable overlays and recording to isolate conflicts.
  4. Verify the game files in its launcher; if instability began immediately after a driver update, consider rolling that driver back.

If a laptop slows down during a session

Check whether temperatures or clocks change as performance falls. Confirm the laptop is on AC power, its OEM performance mode is active, and vents are unobstructed. Heat, adapter limits, quiet modes, and manufacturer power policies can restrict sustained performance even when Windows is set to Best performance.

Avoid unsupported optimizer shortcuts

Be wary of one-click tools that promise universal gains by cleaning the registry, disabling services or security features, changing process priority to Realtime, purging memory, or applying undocumented timer tweaks. Prefer built-in Windows controls, official drivers, measured comparisons, and an easy rollback. Disabling security protections or essential services is not a general gaming-performance recommendation.
