The quickest reliable fix depends on the pattern: one game usually points to that game’s files, save, license, or storage location; several games, apps, or the whole console point to system software, storage, ventilation, power, or hardware. Close the game, restart safely, install updates, and then follow the branch below that matches what your PS5 is doing.
Identify what is actually failing
- One game crashes: update, restore its license, test a new save, reinstall it, and move it to internal console storage if necessary.
- Several games or apps crash, or the PS5 freezes at the system level: update the console, use Safe Mode, check storage and ventilation, then contact PlayStation Repairs if the problem persists.
- The PS5 powers off, loses power, or will not restart: treat it as a power or hardware problem rather than an ordinary game crash. Use Sony’s PS5 power-issues guide.
Start with a safe close and restart
If the game still responds, press the PS button, select the game in the control center, and choose Close Game. Then open Power and select Restart PS5.
For a complete shutdown, choose Power > Turn Off PS5. Wait until the power indicator is off before disconnecting the AC cable. Unplugging while the indicator is solid or blinking can cause data loss, corruption, or console damage, according to Sony’s PS5 support guidance.
If the console is completely unresponsive, hold the physical power button until it turns off. After an abnormal shutdown, let the PS5 start normally before trying other fixes.

Update the crashing game
From the PS5 home screen:
- Highlight the game or app.
- Press the controller’s Options button.
- Select Check for Update.
- Install any available update and test the game again.
Games normally check automatically when launched, but this manual check can catch an interrupted or missed update. Sony documents the process at Check for updates.
Update PS5 system software
Use the current menu path:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select System Software.
- Choose System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software if an update is offered.
To verify the installed version, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. If the console says Up to date, no newer version is available. Sony does not keep a permanently valid version number in its troubleshooting instructions, so check the console itself; this guidance reflects the menu available on August 8, 2026. See Sony’s PS5 system-software page.
If the update is stuck or fails
Press the PS button, open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the update, choose View Error Info, and select Try Again. If downloads repeatedly fail, use Sony’s USB method:
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create an uppercase folder named
PS5, then an uppercaseUPDATEfolder inside it. - Download Sony’s official update file and save it as
PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Turn off the PS5, connect the USB drive, and start Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
Sony says the update file needs approximately 1.1 GB of free space. Follow the current instructions at Update PS5 system software.

Repair a single game’s license, installation, or save
Restore the license
For a digital game that crashes, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, then select the relevant license. You can also highlight the game, press Options, and choose Restore License when that shortcut appears. Restoring licenses does not delete saved data or game files. Details are in Sony’s license instructions.
Test the save without deleting it
If the crash happens at the same point, start the game with a new game or profile where possible. For disc games, Sony recommends testing without the existing save to determine whether it is corrupted. Preserve the original save and do not overwrite or delete it during the test.
Reinstall the game
Delete the affected game through Settings > Storage, then reinstall a digital copy from Game Library or a disc copy from its disc. Verify your save-data situation before deleting anything; reinstalling the game is not the same as deleting saved data. Sony’s documented sequence for application-data errors is update, delete and reinstall, then Safe Mode database repair if needed: CE-108262-9 troubleshooting.
Clean and test a disc
Remove the disc and wipe it with a clean, soft cloth. Confirm that the game is updated, reinstall it if necessary, and test another game disc. A second disc that works normally helps isolate the original disc from the console.

Check where the game is installed
M.2 SSD storage
If the problematic game is on a compatible internal M.2 SSD, pause active downloads from PS button > Downloads/Uploads. For a disc game, wait for its full installation. Then move the game:
- Open Game Library.
- Highlight the game and press Options.
- Select Move Games and Apps.
- Select the game and choose Move to internal console storage.
Supported M.2 drives are PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe models from 250 GB to 8 TB, with a recommended sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster, and an effective heat-dissipation structure. M.2 SATA drives are not supported. See Sony’s M.2 SSD requirements.
USB extended storage
PS5 games cannot run directly from USB extended storage; copy them to internal console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before playing. PS4 games can run directly from compatible USB extended storage. Sony’s storage details are at Storage solutions and USB extended storage support.
Use Safe Mode for system-level freezes
To enter Safe Mode:
- Turn off the PS5 by holding the power button for three seconds.
- Wait until the indicator stops blinking and turns off.
- Press and hold the power button again.
- Release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.

| Safe Mode option | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Does not erase data. | Startup or storage-related problems. |
| Clear System Software Cache | Clears cached system data. | System-feature problems or performance drops. |
| Rebuild Database | Scans the drive and creates a new content database. | System-feature problems or a deleted game icon that remains on Home. |
| Restore Default Settings | Restores factory settings without deleting games, apps, captures, or saved data. | Settings corruption after less invasive steps. |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes all user data and restores the original state. | Last-resort software troubleshooting after a backup. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes all user data and removes the system software. | Final software recovery when a normal reset is insufficient. |
Rebuild Database is not a game-and-save wipe. Also, Restore Default Settings is different from Reset PS5, and Clear Cache and Rebuild Database are separate choices inside their menu. Sony lists the current options at PS5 Safe Mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check ventilation, dust, and controller input
- Keep every side and rear vent unobstructed and leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side.
- Do not place the console on a long-fiber carpet or in a narrow, cramped space.
- Disconnect the AC cable from the rear before cleaning.
- Use a low-powered vacuum cleaner around the vents and do not allow dust to accumulate.
A louder fan during a demanding game is not automatically a fault; Sony says the fan may temporarily run faster to cool the console. Do not treat internal cover removal or fan cleaning as a guaranteed fix. See Sony’s ventilation and console-noise guidance.
If the game is running but buttons appear ignored, update the controller at Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. Controller device software is also updated with PS5 system software.

When a factory reset is justified
Use Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Reset Your Console only after updates, game reinstallation, Safe Mode repairs, and storage checks fail. Back up data first if possible: resetting erases data stored on the console. Sony’s escalation for persistent application-data errors is update, reinstall, rebuild the database, and then reset if the problem continues.
When to stop troubleshooting and request repair
Contact PlayStation Support or PlayStation Repairs when:
- Multiple unrelated games and apps still crash after updates, reinstallations, Safe Mode work, and storage checks.
- The console repeatedly powers off or loses power during play.
- The PS5 will not start normally or repeatedly enters Safe Mode.
- Storage is repeatedly reported as damaged or unrecognized.
- Crashes continue after a reset and clean reinstall.
- The problem includes unusual overheating, persistent abnormal noise, or failure to remain powered on.
Sony notes that problems affecting more than one game may indicate a console fault; continuing power and hardware problems should be handled through its repair service.
