Soul Speed is a boot enchantment that makes you move faster across soul sand and soul soil. Those blocks are common in the Nether and normally slow you down, so Soul Speed is especially valuable for Nether roads, bastion runs and other routes built from soul blocks. It has three levels (I–III), but it also makes boots lose durability occasionally, so Unbreaking and Mending are useful companions.
What Soul Speed does
Soul Speed only affects walking on soul sand and soul soil. It does not speed you up on ordinary blocks, and a block is not affected merely because its name contains “soul.” The enchantment is documented for both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Microsoft’s enchantment documentation describes the movement effect, while the current Bedrock command reference lists soul_speed as a valid enchantment.
Levels and equipment
| Level | Can be used? | Normal survival item |
|---|---|---|
| Soul Speed I | Yes | Boots |
| Soul Speed II | Yes | Boots |
| Soul Speed III | Yes; maximum level | Boots |
In survival, Soul Speed is a boot enchantment. A Soul Speed book cannot normally be applied to a helmet, chestplate, leggings, weapon, tool or other non-boot item.
Why it matters in the Nether
Soul sand and soul soil generate throughout Nether terrain and are also used in player-built paths. Without Soul Speed, soul sand slows movement; Soul Speed turns those stretches into practical travel routes. The benefit is most noticeable when crossing large soul-sand valleys, building highways from soul soil, or moving through bastion areas where every slowed step increases exposure to hazards.

The enchantment does not provide a general speed boost. Once you leave soul sand or soul soil, your movement returns to normal.
How to get Soul Speed
Soul Speed is a treasure enchantment, so an enchanting table does not normally offer it. In vanilla survival, use special loot or bartering instead.
Piglin bartering
Give a piglin a gold ingot. Bartering can return a Soul Speed enchanted book or Soul Speed iron boots, but the result is random and is not guaranteed for any individual ingot. See the Soul Speed reference for the listed bartering outcome.

Bastion remnants
Soul Speed books and boots can also appear in bastion remnant chests. Bastions are dangerous Nether structures, so prepare fire resistance, blocks and a way to escape before searching them.

Why librarian advice is misleading
Repeatedly breaking and replacing a librarian’s lectern is not the normal vanilla source for Soul Speed. Guides recommending that method are outdated or incorrect for current vanilla gameplay; use piglin bartering or bastion loot instead.
How to put it on boots
Survival method: an anvil
- Obtain a Soul Speed enchanted book through bartering or bastion loot.
- Craft or place an anvil.
- Put an eligible pair of boots in the first anvil slot and the Soul Speed book in the second.
- Take the resulting boots from the output slot, paying the displayed experience cost.
The anvil is the normal way to combine an enchanted book with an item, as described in Microsoft’s enchantment guide.

Java Edition command
With commands enabled, hold the eligible boots and run:
/enchant <targets> minecraft:soul_speed <level>
For yourself at the maximum level:
/enchant @s minecraft:soul_speed 3
The target must be holding an eligible item; Soul Speed is intended for boots.

The durability cost—and how to manage it
Each compatible block stepped on while wearing Soul Speed boots gives the boots a 4% chance to lose one durability point. This check occurs on soul sand and soul soil, making durability the enchantment’s principal drawback. Long Nether crossings can therefore wear out otherwise good boots faster than ordinary travel.
Unbreaking
Unbreaking reduces how often durability is consumed, so it is the first defensive enchantment to pair with Soul Speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10

Mending
Mending uses collected experience to repair the boots. A durable long-term pair commonly combines Soul Speed with Unbreaking and Mending, provided the other enchantments on the boots are compatible with your setup. The relevant enchantment behavior is summarized in the Soul Speed reference and Microsoft’s enchantment documentation.
Common misconceptions and edition notes
- “It works everywhere”: No. The speed effect is limited to soul sand and soul soil.
- “Any soul-themed block qualifies”: No. Block names do not expand the enchantment’s targets.
- “An enchanting table can roll it”: Not normally; Soul Speed is treasure-only in survival.
- “It is Java-only”: That claim is outdated. A Minecraft Help page still contains the conflicting statement that Soul Speed is available only in Java Edition, but the current Bedrock command reference and Bedrock enchantment documentation explicitly support
soul_speedand levels 1–3: Minecraft Help, Bedrock commands and Bedrock enchantments.
Is Soul Speed worth using?
For players who travel or build extensively in the Nether, yes: it directly removes the slowest terrain penalty you encounter there. Keep a spare pair of boots or a repair plan if you make long trips, because the 4% per-block durability check is specific to Soul Speed’s useful terrain. If your world rarely involves soul sand or soul soil, the enchantment offers little outside those areas.
