Yes, but only when the PS5 player runs the PS4 version of GTA V/GTA Online. The native PS5 edition cannot join a player on PS4. This is cross-generation play through the older PS4 build, not true crossplay between separate PS4 and PS5 editions.
Which GTA V versions can play together?
The console matters less than the game version being launched. A PS5 can run the backward-compatible PS4 edition, placing both players in the same PS4 GTA Online environment. Rockstar’s native PS5 release is a separate version with its own online environment and features.
| Player 1 | Player 2 | Can they play together? |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 version on PS4 | PS4 version on PS4 | Yes |
| PS4 version on PS4 | PS4 version on PS5 | Yes |
| Native PS5 version on PS5 | PS4 version on PS4 | No |
| Native PS5 version on PS5 | PS4 version on PS5 | No |
| Native PS5 version on PS5 | Native PS5 version on PS5 | Yes |
| PlayStation version | Xbox or PC version | No |
Rockstar describes the PS5 release and its separate online environment in its PS5 and Xbox Series announcement. GTA Online does not offer general PlayStation-to-Xbox, PlayStation-to-PC, or native-PS4-to-native-PS5 crossplay.
How to play with a PS4 player from a PS5
- Open Games Home on the PS5.
- Go to Game Library.
- Select Grand Theft Auto V.
- Press the Options button.
- Open the game’s version selector.
- Choose the entry marked PS4 or PS4 Version.
- Install that version if necessary, then launch GTA Online and join or invite the PS4 player.
PlayStation’s current instructions use the path Game Library > select the game > … button > select the version of the game you want to download or play. Labels can vary slightly with the Store listing and installation state. See PlayStation Games Support.

Launching the separate PS5 entry from the library or GTA V landing page will put the PS5 player in the wrong version for a PS4 friend.
How to check which version is installed
On PS5, the library identifies the installed build as PS4 or PS5. Select the PS4-marked entry before starting GTA Online. The PlayStation Store lists Grand Theft Auto V (PS4™ & PS5™) as a bundle containing separate digital versions, while Grand Theft Auto Online (PlayStation®5) is a PS5-only product. Check the PlayStation Store listing.
What the PS5 player gives up by using the PS4 edition
The PS4 build does not include the generation-specific improvements in the native PS5 release. Rockstar lists the PS5/Xbox Series version’s upgrades in its generation announcement:
Rank #2
- Easy to use
- Excellent quality products
- Good product for use
- Up to 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second
- Improved textures and draw distance
- HDR options and ray tracing
- Faster loading and 3D audio
- Other PS5-specific features
- Hao’s Special Works content and vehicle upgrades
Those features are available only while running the native PS5 version, which cannot share a session with PS4 players.
What profile migration changes
Rockstar allows a GTA Online profile to migrate from PS4 to PS5, but progress made on different generations is not synchronized after migration. The original profile remains on PS4; money, levels, vehicles, purchases and other changes made separately on PS4 and PS5 should be treated as separate progress. Rockstar explains the limits in its profile-migration support article.
Migration does not delete the PS4 game or stop a PS5 from running the PS4 edition. However, the PS5-native character is not a continuously synchronized copy of the PS4 character. Rockstar lists possible migration ineligibility reasons—including a ban or suspension, a previous migration, detected illegitimate progress, or insufficient progress—in its migration-error support article.

Is the PS5 upgrade available to PS4 owners?
Yes. Rockstar’s support page, updated June 18, 2026, says owners of physical or digital PS4 GTAV can download the PS5 version. A physical-disc owner must keep the PS4 disc inserted for ownership verification, and a PS5 Digital Edition cannot use that disc. See Rockstar’s upgrade guidance.
Downloading the upgrade does not merge the two online environments. To play with a PS4 friend, the PS5 owner still has to launch the separately installed PS4 edition.

The PS5 player opened the PS5 version
This is the most common cause. Return to Game Library > Grand Theft Auto V > Options > version selector and launch the PS4 entry.
The PS4 build is not installed
Use the same version selector or the game’s Store/library page to download the PS4 edition. A PS5 can play compatible PS4 games; PlayStation documents version selection in its Games Support guidance.

Both players own the same bundle but installed different builds
The PS4-and-PS5 bundle contains two separate versions. Ownership of both does not place both players in the same session automatically. Confirm the version label on each console.
The migrated character or progress looks different
Migration does not synchronize later PS4 and PS5 progress. Check that the player is using the intended generation and character before assuming data has been lost. Rockstar’s migration rules are documented here.
A character appears missing on PS5
Rockstar has documented a PS5/Xbox Series issue when GTA Online starts directly in a Solo or Invite Only Session. Start in a Freemode Session, or load the character through the Character Wheel in Story Mode, then enter a Solo or Invite Only Session. See Rockstar’s character-loading support article.
Matching versions still produce connection errors
After confirming both builds match, check for Rockstar service outages and then investigate NAT conflicts, router configuration or an unstable connection. Rockstar recommends checking service status before changing network settings in its PS4 connection-troubleshooting guide.

A PS4 and PS5 can play GTA Online together only when the PS5 runs the PS4 edition of GTA V. The native PS5 edition cannot join PS4 sessions, and using the PS4 build means giving up the PS5 version’s visual, performance and Hao’s Special Works upgrades. Players who migrated profiles should also expect separate, unsynchronized progress between generations.
