If Genshin Impact is missing, black, or blank in OBS Studio on Windows, work through these four fixes in order: run OBS as administrator, rebuild Game Capture for the active game window, switch to windowed or borderless mode and use Window Capture, then assign OBS and Genshin to the same high-performance GPU. Also close overlay and monitoring tools that can conflict with OBS’s capture hook.
Before you start: identify the failure
These fixes apply to Genshin Impact on Windows and current OBS Studio releases. OBS’s official download page lists version 32.2.1, released July 24, 2026, for Windows 10 and Windows 11: OBS Studio download.
- Black source: the Game Capture box exists, but it contains no picture.
- Genshin is absent from the Window list: the game is not fully running, or the source needs to be recreated.
- Preview disappears only when you Alt+Tab: exclusive fullscreen may stop rendering while Genshin is unfocused; make a short recording before diagnosing a failed capture.
Fix 1: run OBS Studio as administrator
OBS’s Game Capture troubleshooting guide specifically lists Genshin Impact among games for which administrator mode may be needed. Elevation can let OBS hook the game process when normal capture produces a black or empty source. It is a troubleshooting step, not a universal OBS requirement (OBS Game Capture troubleshooting).
- Close OBS Studio.
- Right-click the OBS Studio shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
- Launch Genshin Impact after OBS has opened.
- Test the Game Capture source again.
Make administrator mode permanent
- Right-click the OBS Studio shortcut and select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Fix 2: recreate Game Capture for the running game
Game Capture is the preferred first choice for DirectX or OpenGL games because it captures the game directly rather than the desktop (OBS Game Capture source).

- Open the scene where Genshin should appear.
- In Sources, select +, choose Game Capture, select Create New, and choose OK.
- Set Mode to Capture specific window.
- With Genshin fully running at the game screen, select its game window from Window.
- Leave Use anti-cheat compatibility hook enabled.
- Select OK and check the preview.
The game must already be open before it appears in the Window drop-down (OBS Game Capture setup guide). Select the running game, not the HoYoPlay or Genshin launcher. If it is missing, reach the game screen, reopen the source properties, or delete the old source and create it again. Confirm the source’s eye icon is enabled and that no full-screen source sits above it in the Sources list.
Choose the right Game Capture mode
| Mode | When to use it |

| Capture any fullscreen application | When you want OBS to detect a fullscreen game automatically. |
| Capture specific window | Recommended when you want to select Genshin explicitly. |
| Capture foreground window with hotkey | When you need to switch the captured foreground application with a shortcut. |
A blank preview after Alt+Tab does not by itself prove that capture failed. An exclusive-fullscreen game can stop rendering when it loses focus. Record a short clip, or view OBS on a second monitor while Genshin remains active (OBS Game Capture troubleshooting).
Fix 3: use Window Capture in windowed or borderless mode
If Game Capture remains black, change Genshin from exclusive fullscreen to a windowed or borderless-style mode when that option is available in your installed client. Window Capture selects the game window without relying on OBS’s game hook.

- In Genshin’s display settings, choose windowed or borderless-style display.
- In OBS, select Sources → + → Window Capture.
- Choose Create New, then OK.
- Select the active Genshin game window in Window.
- Leave Capture Method on Automatic initially.
- If the source is blank, change Capture Method to BitBlt.
- Keep Client Area enabled unless you need the window border.
- Select OK.
Automatic is the normal starting point. OBS notes that BitBlt is less efficient, but it can work with programs that do not capture correctly through the automatic method (OBS Window Capture sources). Windowed or borderless mode plus Window Capture is also OBS’s fallback recommendation for games that do not work correctly with Game Capture (OBS Game Capture troubleshooting).
Fix 4: put OBS and Genshin on the same high-performance GPU
On laptops and systems with integrated and discrete graphics, capture can fail when OBS renders on one GPU while Genshin renders on another. Assign both applications to the same high-performance GPU (OBS GPU selection guide).
- Close OBS Studio.
- Open Windows Settings and go to System → Display → Graphics.
- Under the app list, choose Desktop app or Classic App, depending on the Windows label.
- Select Browse and add
C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe. - Select OBS Studio in the list, choose Options, select High performance, and choose Save.
- If Genshin is listed on the same Graphics page, assign it to that same high-performance GPU.
- Restart both OBS Studio and Genshin Impact.
The path above is OBS’s documented executable location for a standard 64-bit installation. Matching the GPUs prevents cross-GPU rendering from breaking Game Capture or Window Capture.

If all four fixes fail: remove hook conflicts
Overlays, FPS counters, hardware monitors, and other recorders can hook the same graphics functions as OBS. Close or disable these before testing again:
- MSI Afterburner
- RivaTuner Statistics Server
- EVGA Precision
- Discord overlay
- Overwolf
- FRAPS
- Medal.tv
- Other game-recording software
- Some antivirus or firewall products
OBS lists these as known conflict sources (OBS known conflicts). Closing them is the simplest test. If you use RivaTuner Statistics Server, OBS says RTSS 7.3.2 or newer can use Use Microsoft Detours API hooking in RTSS’s Setup settings for compatibility (OBS Game Capture troubleshooting).

“OBS must always run as administrator”
Not generally. OBS identifies Genshin Impact as a game that may require administrator mode, but ordinary OBS operation does not universally require elevation.

“Disable Use anti-cheat compatibility hook”
OBS presents this Game Capture property enabled by default and does not currently recommend disabling it as a standard Genshin fix.
“Capture the Genshin launcher”
The launcher and the running game are separate windows. Select the active Genshin game after it has launched.
“Switch from DirectX 12 to DirectX 11”
Current HoYoverse PC requirements specify DirectX 11 for Genshin Impact (HoYoverse system requirements). OBS’s DirectX 12 advice targets games that offer a DX12 mode, such as Fortnite, and is not a verified Genshin-specific fix.

“A blank preview while Alt+Tabbed proves capture is broken”
Exclusive fullscreen can stop drawing while unfocused. Test a recording or keep Genshin active on another monitor before replacing the source.
The Bottom Line
For a black or missing Genshin source, start with administrator mode and a newly created Capture specific window source. If the hook still fails, use windowed or borderless mode with Window Capture, then make sure OBS and Genshin use the same high-performance GPU and that competing overlays are closed.
