Measure your interpupillary distance (IPD)—the distance between the centers of your pupils—in millimeters, then use it to position your VR headset’s optics. The easiest reliable method is to ask someone to measure pupil center to pupil center while you look straight ahead at a distant target. You can also measure it yourself with a mirror and ruler. The right adjustment depends on the headset: some models use a continuous control, some have only a few lens positions, and others align automatically.
What IPD means—and why it matters in VR
Your IPD is the distance between the centers of your pupils. In a VR headset, the lens or display optical centers should sit as close as possible to your pupil centers. A good alignment helps produce a clear, comfortable image; a mismatch can contribute to blur, double vision, eye strain, dry or watery eyes, light sensitivity, or general visual discomfort. Matt’s Digital’s IPD guidance explains the measurement and its purpose, while Apple’s Vision Pro support guidance lists potential symptoms and advises stopping use until they resolve.
Your measured IPD is a personal physical measurement; a headset’s IPD control is the range or set of lens positions it offers. A displayed number or adjustment control does not mean the headset can match every wearer exactly. VRAR Wiki’s overview of interpupillary distance discusses this distinction.
How to measure your IPD
Ask another person to measure it
- Look straight ahead at a distant target and keep your eyes relaxed.
- Have the other person measure in millimeters from the center of one pupil to the center of the other.
- Repeat the measurement a few times. If the readings differ, compare them and use a consistent reading rather than relying on one potentially misaligned attempt.
This is generally easier than trying to read a ruler in a mirror. HTC’s VIVE Focus Vision IPD instructions recommend having someone help with the measurement.

Measure it yourself with a mirror and ruler
- Stand in front of a mirror and hold a millimeter ruler horizontally against your brow or the bridge of your nose.
- Close one eye. Align the ruler’s zero mark with the center of the open pupil.
- Open the other eye and read the distance to its pupil center in millimeters.
- Repeat several times and average the readings to reduce alignment error.
The ruler-and-mirror method is described in Matt’s Digital’s Quest 3 IPD guide. Keep the ruler steady and take your time: small alignment errors can change the result.

Meta Quest 3
Turn the physical wheel on the bottom of the headset until the on-screen IPD indicator is close to your measured value and the image looks clear and comfortable. Quest 3 has continuous lens-spacing adjustment, unlike Quest 2’s three-position mechanism. Road to VR’s Quest settings guide describes the adjustment.

Meta Quest 2
Quest 2 has three normal physical lens positions, not six. The commonly documented matching guidance is:
| Measured IPD | Quest 2 lens position |
|---|---|
| 61 mm or smaller | Position 1, narrowest |
| 61–66 mm | Position 2, middle |
| 66 mm or larger | Position 3, widest |
These ranges meet at 61 mm and 66 mm, so treat the boundaries as approximate guidance and choose the position that gives you the clearest, most comfortable view. If your IPD falls between positions, compare the adjacent detents while looking at distant text or high-contrast detail; the mathematically nearest setting is not automatically the best-feeling one. Do not force the lenses between detents: reports of extra “settings” refer to positions outside the normal adjustment method and may leave the lenses misaligned. Road to VR documents the three positions and their approximate ranges.

PlayStation VR2
During setup, adjust lens distance so your eyes sit in the middle of the lenses, then press the headset’s Function button. To revisit alignment, use Home screen → Settings → Accessories → PlayStation VR2 → VR headset → Adjust Lens Distance and VR Headset Position. This control addresses both lens spacing and headset placement: moving the lenses alone may not center your eyes if the headset sits too high, low, or off to one side.
Sony’s current setup instructions do not ask you to enter a measured IPD number. While wearing the headset, the quick-settings route is PS button → PlayStation VR2 Quick Settings; its options include Adjust visibility, but Sony does not list a numeric IPD-entry control there. The separate eye-tracking calibration path is Home screen → Settings → Accessories → PlayStation VR2 → Eye Tracking → Enable Eye Tracking; select Adjust Eye Tracking in that section if tracking is inaccurate. Eye-tracking calibration does not replace physically centering your eyes in the lenses. See Sony’s PS VR2 setup instructions.

From the VIVE menu, choose Settings → Adjust IPD Image. HTC’s support instructions also list Lobby → Settings → General → IPD for the headset’s IPD controls. Use the on-screen image and headset controls to adjust until the view is clear and comfortable. See HTC’s VIVE Focus Vision instructions.
Apple Vision Pro
Vision Pro does not ask you to enter an IPD number or follow a conventional manual lens-spacing procedure. When prompted during setup or alignment, press and hold the Digital Crown until the displays align; Apple says this adjusts the device automatically to your IPD. Apple also notes that Vision Pro accommodates a range of IPDs and that users outside that range may experience visual discomfort. Read Apple’s Vision Pro setup and comfort guidance.

If the image is still uncomfortable or unclear
Recheck alignment and headset fit
Even a correct IPD measurement cannot compensate for a headset that is positioned poorly. Recenter the lenses in front of your pupils and adjust the headset’s position and fit. For Vision Pro, Apple identifies eye-to-display distance, excess pressure, side light leakage, and eyelashes touching the device as possible fit problems. If the device reports that your eyes are too close to or too far from the displays, Apple recommends changing the Light Seal Cushion.
Stop if you develop visual symptoms
Blurred or doubled vision, eye strain, dry or watery eyes, light sensitivity, or visual discomfort can indicate that the viewing setup is not working for you. If using Vision Pro produces these symptoms, Apple says to stop until they resolve. Apple also recommends a break at least every 20–30 minutes when first using Vision Pro, since discomfort may build gradually or appear immediately.
Separate lens alignment from eye-tracking calibration
Eye tracking and IPD alignment solve different problems. For PS VR2, use Adjust Lens Distance and VR Headset Position to position your eyes in the optical area; use Adjust Eye Tracking only to recalibrate tracking when it is inaccurate. Sony lists both procedures in its PS VR2 setup guidance.
