You cannot install RetroArch on a stock retail PS4. The console must already run a compatible exploit and homebrew enabler such as GoldHEN, then you install an unofficial PS4 .pkg through GoldHEN’s Package Installer. Sony’s normal system-update menu and the official RetroArch download page are not installation routes for PS4.
What you need before installing
- A PS4 running a firmware and exploit combination supported by the GoldHEN release you use. GoldHEN release notes document support for the PS4 11.00 exploit (PPPwn), while support for other firmware versions varies; do not treat “9.00 or lower” as a universal requirement. Check the compatibility information for your exact exploit and GoldHEN build at GoldHEN’s releases page.
- GoldHEN successfully activated. It provides Debug Settings and package installation; neither is present on an unmodified retail PS4.
- An unofficial PS4 RetroArch package that matches your homebrew environment. RetroArch’s official platform page currently labels PS4 support “Coming soon” and says available PS4 versions are unofficial: retroarch.com/?page=platforms. The official site’s current stable version, 1.22.2, is not identified as a PS4 package, so do not download a Windows, Linux, Android or other-platform build expecting it to work on PS4.
- A USB drive formatted as exFAT or FAT32. The current GoldHEN package guide recommends exFAT.
Use homebrew packages you are legally entitled to use. GoldHEN distinguishes ordinary licensed packages from homebrew/fake packages; a RetroArch installer must be compatible with the active jailbreak and HEN environment.
Install RetroArch from a USB drive
1. Put the package on the USB drive
- Back up anything on the USB drive, then format it as exFAT (FAT32 is also supported).
- Copy the RetroArch PS4
.pkgfile to the drive’s root. The root means the top level you see when opening the drive, not aPS4/UPDATEsystem-update folder. GoldHEN can also search supported subdirectories when that feature is available in your release. - Safely eject the drive and connect it to the PS4.

2. Activate GoldHEN and choose the USB package source
- Activate your exploit and load GoldHEN.
- From the PS4 home screen, open the GoldHEN menu in the top-left corner.
- Choose Debug Settings.
- Open the package-installer settings and set Package Source to
usb [ usb:/ ]. - Open Package Installer.
GoldHEN documents three package-source modes: USB (usb:/), internal HDD (hdd:/data/pkg/) and All. If the source is set only to HDD, a package on USB will not appear.

3. Install the package
- In Package Installer, select the RetroArch
.pkgfile. - Confirm installation and wait for the progress indicator to finish. Do not disconnect the USB drive or power off the console during installation.
- Return to the PS4 home screen and launch RetroArch from the newly installed application tile.
No command-line command is required for this USB method. It is a GUI process through GoldHEN’s Debug Settings.
Alternative installation methods
Install from the PS4’s internal storage
GoldHEN can install packages placed at the exact internal path /data/pkg/. Transfer the package there using a method supported by your setup, set Package Source to hdd [ hdd:/data/pkg/ ], then open Package Installer. GoldHEN also documents subdirectory search support (introduced in 2.4b13), so a compatible release may find packages below the root of the selected source.

Use the Homebrew Store
The Homebrew Store is an alternative catalog, not an official RetroArch distribution channel. Its documentation says it can provide emulators including RetroArch and requires GoldHEN, HEN-VTX or Mira. The browser installer is https://pkg-zone.com/install; see the installation notes at ConsoleMods’ Homebrew Store guide. If direct installation is incompatible with your firmware, that guide says to download the store package to a PC and install it with the USB procedure above.

Troubleshooting
Debug Settings is missing
Debug Settings is a GoldHEN feature, not a normal retail-PS4 menu. Reactivate the exploit and confirm that GoldHEN loaded successfully. If the payload failed, the standard PS4 menus will not gain Debug Settings.

Package Installer shows no RetroArch file
- Confirm the PS4 recognizes the USB drive and that it is exFAT or FAT32.
- Verify the
.pkgis on the drive root or in a subdirectory supported by your GoldHEN release. - Check Package Source; choose
usb [ usb:/ ]for a USB package, or All while diagnosing. - Make sure the file is actually a PS4 package and has not been renamed with a second extension such as
.pkg.zip.
The package is visible but will not install
The package may target another platform, be damaged, or be incompatible with the active firmware/HEN environment. Obtain a PS4-specific build from a trustworthy homebrew source and verify its compatibility rather than trying a Windows, Linux or Android RetroArch download.
Use GoldHEN’s diagnostic information
In releases that provide these features, Package Info (introduced in GoldHEN 2.4b14) displays the package name, title ID, patch version and content type. Show Package Path (introduced in 2.4b13) displays the full path, helping identify whether GoldHEN is reading the USB or internal-storage copy. These features are documented at ConsoleMods’ GoldHEN reference.

After installation
Launch RetroArch from the PS4 home screen. RetroArch itself is only the emulator frontend; you must supply legally obtained game files and configure cores and controller settings inside the application. If the app disappears after a reboot, remember that many jailbreak setups require GoldHEN to be reactivated after restarting the console.
GoldHEN also exposes network services such as FTP on port 2121, BinLoader on 9090 and Klog on 3232. Those are service ports, not commands needed for the USB installation method.
