Spoiler warning: This guide reveals Act Three events involving Gortash, Orin, Yenna, the Bhaal Temple and a kidnapped companion.

The apparent camp imposter is Orin the Red, a shapeshifter disguised as one of the characters she can kidnap. Baldur’s Gate 3 does not offer a general interrogation puzzle that lets you identify her by questioning every companion. The reliable reveal comes from a scripted camp or sewer scene tied to the Rescue Orin’s Victim objective.

How to trigger the imposter scene

  1. Reach the Lower City in Act Three. Gortash’s warning establishes that a shapeshifter is operating near the party, but it is a story signal rather than a clue you can solve through companion dialogue.
  2. Make a save before resting. After arriving in the Lower City, take a long rest. The kidnapping scene commonly starts then if you have not already entered the relevant sewer sequence.
  3. Check the sewers if nothing happens. Entering the Lower City sewer route can trigger Orin’s confrontation directly. In that version she is already wearing the kidnapped character’s form.
  4. Follow the disguise-specific dialogue. Orin eventually drops the disguise, identifies the real hostage and points the story toward her stronghold. The scene, not an inventory check or random accusation, is the dependable identification method.

Why questioning companions does not work

Reports that you can expose the imposter by catching a companion in a false statement or inspecting their belongings are not a dependable solution. The game does not provide a universal pre-reveal test. Treat suspicious conversations as atmosphere, keep the investigation moving and follow the hostage objective instead of accusing companions at random.

Who Orin can kidnap

Orin selects a living character who is not currently in the active party and who is otherwise eligible for the event. Romance and other availability conditions can change the result; approval alone does not determine the victim. Keeping a companion in the active party, or having that character dead or unavailable, generally protects them from selection.

Selection order Possible victim What to know
1 Lae’zel Eligible when alive, available to the event and outside the active party.
2 Halsin Chosen when higher-priority eligible targets are absent.
3 Gale Can be selected if the earlier targets are unavailable.
4 Minthara Only possible when she is alive and meets the event’s availability rules.
Fallback Yenna Used when no eligible companion remains. Orin then appears in Yenna’s form.

If Yenna is taken, the scene includes her cat, Grub, and is deliberately designed to make the deception unmistakable once Orin reveals herself.

What each disguise does

Lae’zel

Orin appears as Lae’zel and threatens Yenna. A difficult speech check may let you intervene. Failing to resolve the encounter can result in Yenna’s death; success leads to Orin’s reveal and the continuing kidnapping plot.

Gale

The disguised Gale invokes the danger of his Netherese orb and claims that sacrificing himself could avert a greater disaster. The apparent confession is a performance before Orin exposes the disguise.

Halsin

Orin impersonates Halsin in a loss-of-control scene involving his bear form and Scratch, or an equivalent sewer version. The crisis is staged to provoke an emotional reaction.

Minthara

The false Minthara behaves paranoically and tries to turn the party against itself. The scene reinforces the theme that anyone nearby could be a shapeshifter before the reveal.

Yenna

When Yenna is the hostage, Orin takes the child’s appearance and offers food made from Grub. This is the most disturbing variant and confirms the identity once the scene plays out.

Where the victim is held

The hostage is chained to the central altar in the Bhaal Temple, in the Undercity beneath Baldur’s Gate. You rescue the character during the confrontation with Orin. The temple can contain Gale, Halsin, Lae’zel, Minthara or Yenna, matching the event’s possible victim list.

  1. Begin or complete the Open Hand Temple murder investigation in Rivington.
  2. Follow the evidence and the killer’s trail into the Lower City.
  3. Pursue Dolor or obtain the severed-hand evidence needed for the next stage.
  4. Use that information to gain access to the Murder Tribunal.
  5. Resolve the tribunal encounter and continue toward the Temple of Bhaal.
  6. Confront Orin and free the abducted character from the altar.

This investigation is a route to Orin’s domain, not a separate method for identifying which companion was replaced at camp. Gortash- and Orin-related alternatives can also advance the wider Netherstone objective.

Do not confuse Orin’s kidnapping with other doppelgangers

Act Three contains several unrelated shapeshifter encounters. The circus performance involving Dribbles exposes an impostor and leads into the quest for Dribbles’s severed body parts; it is not the camp-imposter event. Dolor and other doppelgangers encountered during the murder investigation are connected to the Bhaalist plot, but they do not reveal which character Orin has abducted.

Patch and timing considerations

Official patches have corrected Orin’s kidnapping and disguise sequences, including Dark Urge duel flow, abducted-companion behavior and quest updates involving doppelgangers. Older walkthroughs may therefore describe timing or edge cases that no longer behave exactly the same way.

  • Save before the first Lower City long rest.
  • Keep Rescue Orin’s Victim active so the next objective is visible.
  • If the camp scene does not fire, explore the sewer route rather than repeatedly accusing companions.
  • Follow the scripted confrontation instead of trying to force an identity check through inventory inspection.
