The title is now Counter-Strike 2 (CS2): Valve describes it as a free upgrade to CS:GO on its official product page. The steps below are for the current CS2 client on Windows; older CS:GO menus and commands may differ.
1. Check the headset mute and connection
Before changing settings, check the headset’s inline mute switch, the boom mic’s mute position, any laptop mute key, and physical volume controls. Reseat the cable or USB connector.
- For a 3.5 mm headset, make sure its microphone plug is connected to the microphone input. Headphone audio working does not prove that the mic input, combo jack, or headset cable is working.
- For a USB mic or headset, connect it directly to the computer for testing rather than through a hub, adapter, or extension. Steam recommends trying another port and bypassing those devices in its microphone troubleshooting guidance.
2. Record a test in Windows
Open Start > Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, select the microphone you intend to use and open its properties. Microsoft’s instructions use Start test: speak normally, select Stop test, then play the recording. Adjust input volume if needed. See Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting steps.
- No voice in the recording: troubleshoot the connection, hardware, Windows permissions, or audio driver before changing CS2 settings. A game setting cannot fix a microphone that Windows cannot record from.
- Voice is clear: continue to the Windows device selection and Steam test.
- Voice is very quiet or distorted: check input volume, mic position, cable condition, and another port or device.
3. Allow microphone access in Windows
In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone as appropriate. Microsoft explains these controls in its microphone permission guide. Windows 10 uses different labels, but the key is to allow device, app, and desktop-app access.

If you changed permissions while another voice app was open, close and relaunch it so it can reopen the microphone with the updated access.
4. Select the intended Windows input
Go to Settings > System > Sound and check the device selected under Input. A webcam, monitor, controller, virtual audio device, or newly connected USB headset can become the selected or default microphone. Temporarily disconnect or disable unused inputs if Windows or Steam keeps choosing the wrong one.

Steam says its default-device option follows the recording and playback devices selected as default in Windows. Its voice settings guidance explains how device selection can affect Steam voice.
5. Test and adjust Steam Voice
In the Steam client, open Friends & Chat, select the gear icon, then choose the Voice tab. Run Steam’s microphone test before testing in CS2; Steam recommends this as a separate troubleshooting step in its official microphone guide.

- Input device: select the intended microphone rather than an unexpected device.
- Input volume or gain: raise it if your voice is too quiet; lower it if the recording clips or sounds excessively loud.
- Voice transmission threshold: lower or disable it if it cuts off your speech. Raise it if background noise is being transmitted. Steam describes this control in its advanced voice settings guidance.
- Audio processing: if automatic volume or gain, echo cancellation, or noise cancellation causes abnormal results, test with the relevant option disabled. These are troubleshooting options, not settings every player needs to change.
If the Steam test works but CS2 does not, compare the selected microphone before and after launching the game. Steam notes that a game starting can change microphone input.
6. Check CS2 voice mode and push to talk
In CS2’s audio or voice settings, confirm that voice transmission is enabled and set to the mode you intend to use. If you use push to talk, check the key shown beside its setting. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance specifically advises checking both the transmission type and the configured push-to-talk key.

- Open CS2’s settings and find the voice-transmission and push-to-talk options.
- Choose the intended transmission mode and bind push to talk to a simple, unused keyboard key.
- Apply the change, then test with teammates while speaking clearly and holding the newly bound key if required by the selected mode.
A working Windows microphone can still seem broken in-game if transmission is disabled, the key is no longer bound, the voice threshold is too high, or the game selected a different input. Avoid relying on a particular console command as a guaranteed fix: commands and behavior can change between CS2 updates.

If the microphone fails Windows or Steam testing, isolate the connection and device before considering a replacement. Steam recommends checking microphone and sound-device drivers, trying other ports, bypassing hubs and adapters, and testing other hardware or another computer in its official troubleshooting instructions.

- Try another USB port, directly on the computer if possible.
- For a 3.5 mm headset, inspect the plug and cable and try another compatible audio input.
- Temporarily remove adapters, extensions, and converters.
- Test the microphone in another application.
- Try a second microphone or headset on the same computer.
- If available, test the original microphone on another computer.
- Check the audio-device manufacturer’s driver page for the appropriate microphone or sound-device driver.
If another mic works on the same computer, the original device, cable, or headset is the likely fault. If no microphone records in Windows, investigate permissions, drivers, the sound device, or the operating system. If Windows and Steam both work but CS2 does not, return to the game’s selected input, voice mode, push-to-talk bind, and any application conflict.
When a replacement headset makes sense
If the current mic still fails Windows testing after connection and port checks, try a second device if you can. A USB gaming headset with microphone can be both a replacement and a useful isolation test because it bypasses a suspect analog jack or damaged headset cable. Check that it supports Windows PC use, has the connector you need, and offers controls that suit you, such as a physical mute. It is not a fix for blocked permissions or an incorrect in-game setting.
8. Restart the layer you changed
Restart CS2 after changing its voice or audio settings. Restart Steam after changing Steam Voice settings or if it has not refreshed the selected device. Restart Windows after installing a driver or addressing a device-recognition problem. A restart can reinitialize a device, but test after each relevant change so you can tell which layer resolved the problem.

Fixes that usually waste time
- Reinstalling CS2 first: this cannot unmute a headset, enable Windows microphone access, repair a damaged cable, or correct a push-to-talk bind.
- Buying a new mic before testing: first establish whether Windows can record from the current one. A replacement is relevant when testing or connection checks point to a hardware fault.
- Using a driver updater as a guaranteed fix: Steam supports checking device drivers, but whether a driver update helps depends on the hardware and system.
