There is no official level requirement for any Elden Ring location. The commonly cited Eldenpedia progression list is a community roadmap that ranks areas from early Limgrave through the Haligtree’s roots. Use it to judge relative difficulty, then adjust for your build, weapon upgrades, route and preferred challenge. For online play, character level and weapon-upgrade level matter together, so PvP ranges should be read separately from PvE exploration guidance.
How to read recommended levels in Elden Ring
FromSoftware does not publish a mandatory level gate for each region. Elden Ring is designed around multiple approaches: melee, magic, stealth, spirit or player allies, mounted exploration and optional detours. A location can therefore be reachable before its suggested tier, while a later area may still feel manageable for a highly optimized character.

- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.

What level is enough to finish the game?
The Eldenpedia guide gives two broad community estimates:
- About level 120, plus or minus 10: the guide describes this as an average level at which finishing the game is possible. It also notes that some players remain near this level for multiplayer activity.
- Levels 150–170: the guide says many casual players finish in this range.
These figures are estimates from an undated community page, not a FromSoftware recommendation, survey or matchmaking guarantee. Your vigor, damage stats, defensive options, weapon upgrade, talismans, summon use and familiarity with boss patterns can make the same character level feel dramatically easier or harder.

PvP and co-op: character level is only half the picture
Matchmaking-oriented advice uses both character level and weapon upgrade level. The following examples come from a separate Windows Central PvP guide and are intended for online matchmaking, not as PvE requirements.
| Location | Character level | Standard weapon | Somber weapon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limgrave West | 1–15 | +0–1 | +0 |
| Academy of Raya Lucaria | 50–60 | +4–6 | +2–3 |
| Leyndell | 90–110 | +15–20 | +6–8 |
| Leyndell, Ashen Capital | 120–150 | +25 | +10 |
Those brackets describe where an online character may find more appropriate opponents or partners under the guide’s assumptions. They do not promise an exact queue, because matchmaking also depends on the game’s level and upgrade matching rules, platform activity and the players available at that time.

For a first PvE playthrough
- Use the location tiers as a warning when ordinary enemies begin killing you in a few hits or your damage stops making progress.
- Prioritize upgrading your main weapon and maintaining enough vigor before grinding many character levels.
- Explore nearby caves, mines and side regions when a legacy dungeon feels too difficult; they provide runes, upgrade materials and useful equipment.
For a challenge run
Enter areas below the community tier, restrict summons or stop leveling when your build reaches the challenge you want. The tier list is a reference point, not a minimum you must obey.
For PvP or planned co-op
Choose a target character level and weapon-upgrade bracket together. Upgrading a weapon far beyond the range associated with your intended area can change which players you match with even if your character level remains unchanged.

Why the same location can feel over- or under-leveled
- Build efficiency: a focused damage stat and a fully upgraded weapon usually outperform a character spreading points across several attributes.
- Survivability: vigor, armor, damage negation and defensive talismans determine whether mistakes are recoverable.
- Equipment and status effects: weapon moveset, range, poise damage, bleed, frost, stance breaks and spell selection can matter more than a small level difference.
- Player support: spirit ashes, NPCs and summoned players can change encounter difficulty substantially.
- Route and optional content: a player who clears side dungeons may arrive with more upgrades than someone following only the main path.
Practical rule of thumb
Use the Eldenpedia sequence to identify whether a region is broadly early-, mid- or late-game; use your weapon level and build performance to decide whether you are ready; and use the separate PvP table only when your goal is online matchmaking. Treat the listed numbers as starting points rather than universal requirements.
