| Color | Category | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | EMBLEM | LABEL, MARK, SEAL, STAMP |
| Green | SUBJECTS OF ACCLAIMED MUSICAL BIOPICS | BROWN, CASH, DYLAN, MERCURY |
| Blue | U.S. CITIES | BUFFALO, HELENA, IRVING, PHOENIX |
| Purple | FRUITS WITH THEIR SECOND LETTERS CHANGED | AMPLE (APPLE), DOTE (DATE), LUMON (LEMON), POACH (PEACH) |
How the purple category works
Each purple entry is one letter away from a fruit name, with the changed character specifically in position two:
- AMPLE changes M to P to make APPLE.
- DOTE changes O to A to make DATE.
- LUMON changes U to E to make LEMON.
- POACH changes O to E to make PEACH.
This construction makes familiar-looking words such as AMPLE and POACH act as deliberate decoys until the letter-position rule becomes clear.

Tom’s Guide reported a 4.3-out-of-5 difficulty rating and a 67% solve rate for this puzzle, attributing both figures to Connections Companion archive data (2025). Those are secondary statistics, not figures published by The New York Times.
