Yes—DSLinux was a historical project to port Linux to Nintendo DS hardware. Its project materials describe the original Nintendo DS and DS Lite as targets, loaded through homebrew and flashcard hardware. They do not establish that DSLinux is currently maintained, easy to obtain, or compatible with every DS-family system.
What is DSLinux?
The historical DSLinux project overview describes it as “a project that aims to port Linux to the Nintendo DS gaming console.” It was an experimental homebrew project for running Linux software on the handheld, not a modern, general-purpose distribution. The available project mirror identifies the Nintendo DS and DS Lite as targets.

The project’s historical home page also said that the page was hosted on a Nintendo DS using DSLinux and a ported web server. That is a claim made by the project about its own page, not independent confirmation that the setup or page remains operational today.
What could DSLinux do?
Project materials advertised text-focused uses, including web access, email, RSS, and simple text games, along with applications ported from desktop Linux. A historical feature directory also lists a shell, text browser, IRC, telnet, SSH, and MP3/WAV playback.
#1 Best Overall
- The DS Lite system is a region free device, it can plays all Nintendo DS Lite games and Gameboy Advance Games
These are historical advertised features, not guarantees that a particular build includes them or that online services and network connections still work. The sources characterize the package selection as small; they do not establish a current package catalog.
What do you need to run DSLinux?
Historical setup material describes a homebrew-capable console and flashcard loading. A third-party guide identifies Slot 1 or Slot 2 flashcards as loading options and describes Slot 2 RAM expansion as useful for graphics and some programs. These categories do not establish compatibility with any specific card or accessory available today.

- Confirm the console and boot path. The strongest documented targets are the original Nintendo DS and DS Lite. Verify the exact console, flashcard, and DSLinux build combination before attempting installation.
- Check whether additional memory is relevant. The historical project overview reports 4 MB of standard memory and up to 36 MB with expansion hardware. These are figures stated by the old overview; its publication year is not given in the retrieved page, and the figures are not new measurements.
- Use build instructions cautiously. The project mirror preserves an old build process involving source retrieval, toolchain requirements, configuration, compilation, and installation files. Its toolchain notes are historical and should not be treated as current Linux build guidance.
Current flashcard, RAM-expansion, firmware, and installation compatibility is not established by the available documentation. The mirror mentions emulator use, but emulator compatibility has not been independently verified.
Does DSLinux work on a DS Lite?
The fan-maintained project mirror lists the Nintendo DS and DS Lite as DSLinux targets. That is historical target information, not a current device-by-device compatibility chart or a guarantee that a particular flashcard and build will work together.

Does DSLinux work on a DSi or 3DS?
Compatibility is uncertain. The fan-maintained mirror says newer systems such as DSi and 3DS might work in DS-compatibility mode. A report dated December 25, 2023 describes a kernel panic on one DSi XL configuration using nds-bootstrap and Unlaunch. That single failure does not establish whether all newer-model setups work or fail.

The available material does not establish current active maintenance, a reliable official download channel, or a present-day release schedule. Historical pages and mirrors preserve project information, but they are not evidence that downloads, services, or hardware support are currently maintained. Treat any surviving files and instructions as archival, and do not assume an old build is safe or compatible with your setup.
