An exit code such as 1 or -1 only tells you Minecraft crashed; it does not identify why. Start by saving the crash report and log, then test a clean profile and check the Java runtime and mods against your exact Minecraft and Forge versions. The right fix depends on what those checks show.
Record your setup and preserve the crash details
Before changing files or settings, write down the Minecraft Java Edition version, Forge version or build, launcher, operating system, instance directory, and Java runtime shown for the profile. Note whether the profile has mods and what the crash screen says. Keep the crash report and relevant logs, especially logs/latest.log and, when available, debug.log. Back up worlds before changing settings or moving files.
If you later share a log for help, remove account tokens and other private information first. Do not post secrets contained in a log.
Use the report or log to narrow down the cause
Forge’s support FAQ explains that error codes 1 and -1 mean the game crashed; neither code is a diagnosis. Check the crash report and logs for the earliest useful exception, or a specific message about a missing mod or incompatible version. Read the surrounding lines for context: a generic launcher message at the end may only report that the launch stopped. Forge’s support FAQ asks users seeking help to include diagnostic files.

- DELUXE COLLECTION — Includes the base game, three add-ons (Celebration Food, Rescue Dogs, and Plenty O’ Blocks), three exclusive Character Creator items, and 700 Minecoins.
- CREATE — Build whatever you can imagine in your own infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, and craft your way through a world filled with surprises in the ultimate sandbox game.
- SURVIVE — Experience unforgettable adventures as you face mysterious foes, traverse exciting landscapes, and travel to perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Have a blast with friends, whether you’re sitting on the same couch in split screen or miles apart in cross-platform play for console, mobile, and PC.
Do not choose a fix based only on the exit code. A Java exception, a missing required dependency, and a graphics error point to different troubleshooting paths.
Test a clean installation of the same game version
Create a new Minecraft Java Edition installation and select the same game version as the profile that crashes. Minecraft’s launcher crash troubleshooting guide recommends this isolation test. Keep the original instance and worlds intact while testing.

- Create a separate installation in the launcher and choose the same Minecraft version.
- Launch it without adding the old profile’s mods or custom settings.
- If it starts, investigate the old installation’s mods and advanced settings. Minecraft’s guide also suggests testing default settings, including resolution and JVM arguments.
- If the clean installation also crashes, use its report or log to guide the next checks rather than assuming an old mod is responsible.
A successful clean launch narrows the problem to something in the original setup; it does not, by itself, identify which mod or setting caused it.
Match the Java runtime to your Minecraft and Forge version
Check which Java runtime the launcher profile actually uses and compare it with the requirement for that specific Minecraft and Forge generation. Do not assume that installing the newest Java fixes every crash, or that every player must manually replace a launcher’s bundled runtime.

The current Forge getting-started documentation lists Java 21 and a 64-bit JVM as prerequisites for its development environment. That is not a universal player instruction. By contrast, the archived Forge 1.19.2 documentation says that Minecraft and Forge for that version compile against Java 17. These are version-specific contexts; consult the requirements for your exact release and launcher before changing runtimes.
Check Forge mods and their required dependencies
If a Forge profile launches without mods, add the original mods back in small batches—or one at a time—and launch after each addition. Check that each file is meant for the same Minecraft version and Forge loader as the profile. If the log names a required dependency, install a compatible version of that dependency; if it reports an incompatible version, check the mod’s stated version range.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10

Forge’s mod-file documentation describes how mods can declare mandatory dependencies and accepted version ranges. Treat loader matching as a basic compatibility check: mod files for a different loader are not interchangeable by assumption.

Memory allocation can contribute to crashes or performance problems when it does not suit the system or the game’s requirements, but changing it blindly is not a reliable fix. Minecraft’s memory allocation guidance gives conditional examples: systems with 4 GB of RAM or less may need a lower allocation, while systems with 8 GB or more may be able to allocate more. The appropriate value still depends on the game version and available system memory; leave memory for the operating system and other applications rather than assigning nearly all of it to Minecraft.

- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
The same guidance notes that the default allocation changed after snapshot 26.1-snapshot-2. Do not treat one -Xmx value as correct for every version or modpack. Follow the current instructions for your launcher and game version, and back up worlds before changing settings.
Investigate graphics issues when the evidence points there
If the crash report mentions a pixel-format or accelerated-graphics problem, or the failure involves rendering, use Minecraft’s video and graphics troubleshooting guidance. It identifies outdated software or drivers as possible causes and recommends installing system updates and restarting for relevant symptoms. This is a targeted check, not a reason to update drivers as a blanket fix for an unrelated mod or Java error.
Ask for help with the information needed to diagnose it
If the profile still crashes, provide the Minecraft and Forge versions, launcher and operating system, whether an empty Forge profile launches, the full crash report, the relevant debug log, and the exact action that triggers the failure. Forge’s support FAQ requests logs and crash reports for support requests. Remove private data from files before sharing them.
