The Internet Archive created the Console Living Room to make emulated console software accessible in a browser. When the collection’s expansion was announced in 2014, the Archive described it as covering games from the 1970s and 1980s, with more than 800 cartridges across five consoles. That is a historical snapshot, not a current inventory count. The Archive does not establish here how many items are available to play today or which individual titles still run in the browser.
Browse the collection page to see what is currently listed. Playability may differ from one item to another, so a listing should not be taken as a guarantee that its game will load in an emulator.
How to try a game in your browser
- Open the Internet Archive’s Console Living Room.
- Choose a game and open its item page.
- Look for the browser player and follow the controls displayed on that page. The player and its available controls may differ by item.
- If the player does not start, check that JavaScript is enabled, then consult any help or control information shown on the item page.
The Archive’s FAQ describes an older workflow in which a visitor opened an item page, selected a play or run control, and started the emulator in the player. It also describes JavaScript-based emulation without a plug-in. Those instructions document the system at the time; they do not confirm today’s interface, loading behavior or compatibility with every browser or device.

Keyboard, gamepads and device compatibility
The historical FAQ mentions gamepad controls, but it does not establish that a particular modern controller works with a given title or browser. Start with the controls shown in the player. A USB controller is optional, not a requirement established for the collection; if you try one, check whether the specific game’s player recognizes it. Current mobile behavior and per-title compatibility have not been confirmed, so a game that works on one device may not work the same way on another.
Playing a game does not grant reuse rights
A game appearing in an emulated browser player is not, by itself, permission to download, redistribute, stream or otherwise reuse it. The Archive FAQ reproduction says the Internet Archive cannot guarantee the copyright status or rights information of collection items. For any use beyond playing, check the specific item’s rights statement and the law that applies to your situation.
