The ghostly game is Google’s Magic Cat Academy, the Halloween 2016 Doodle released on October 31, 2016. You play Momo, a first-year cat wizard, by drawing or swiping symbols above invading ghosts. Although contemporary coverage compared its wizard-school theme with Harry Potter, Google presents Magic Cat Academy as its own original setting—not an official Harry Potter game or licensed tie-in.
What is Google’s Magic Cat Academy game?
Google’s Doodle archive identifies the game as “Halloween 2016.” Its story follows Momo, a feline student whose school is overrun by ghosts. She must rescue her friends and restore order across the academy.
The character was inspired by Doodler Juliana Chen’s real black cat, also named Momo. Google says the team first considered a magic cat whose soup raised the dead, but moved to a wizard-school idea because the soup concept felt too abstract for Halloween.
How do you play the Halloween 2016 Google Doodle?
- Find a ghost approaching Momo.
- Look at the symbol displayed above that ghost’s head.
- Draw or swipe the same symbol on the game screen.
- Cast the spell quickly and accurately before the ghost reaches you.
Google’s official description calls for drawing the symbols, while contemporary BetaNews coverage notes that touchscreen swiping is convenient and that a mouse also works.

Is Magic Cat Academy officially connected to Harry Potter?
No official connection is established. The “Harry Potter-inspired” wording comes from the contemporary headline and reflects the familiar wizard-school comparison. Google’s Doodle archive and its October 31, 2016 post describe Magic Cat Academy as an original story with its own characters and setting. The wand joke in Google’s character voice is playful wording, not evidence of a Harry Potter license.
