Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Microsoft began rolling out its Xbox system update on November 16, 2022, adding direct Discord voice-channel access, a redesigned Captures app, improved Series X|S capture bitrate, wish-list gifting and sale alerts, new power information, and more streaming options. These are features of that 2022 release; Xbox menus and service behavior may have changed since then.
What the November 2022 Xbox update added
The update combined several social, capture, commerce, power-management, and streaming changes in one console software release. Jonathan Hildebrandt, Principal Group Program Manager for Xbox Experiences, described it as providing “the ability to connect your Discord voice channels directly from your Xbox console, updates to wish list gifting and sale notifications, an improved captures experience for your game clips, and a lot more.”
- Join Discord servers and voice channels from the Xbox Guide after linking accounts.
- Use Discord noise suppression on Xbox Series X|S.
- Manage, edit, and copy screenshots and clips through a dedicated Captures app.
- Record 720p and 1080p Series X|S clips at a higher bitrate.
- Send wish-list gifts and receive notifications about wish-listed items on sale.
- Compare Shutdown (energy saving) and Sleep power behavior, with new Series X|S consoles defaulting to Shutdown.
- Stream directly to Twitch, Lightstream, or Streamlabs Studio.
How Discord voice chat worked on Xbox
Joining a server and channel
After linking a Discord account to Xbox, players could open the Guide, choose Parties & chats, select Discord, and pick an available server and voice channel. Xbox showed the channel’s participants before the user joined, making it possible to preview who was present.
- Link your Discord and Xbox accounts.
- Open the Xbox Guide.
- Go to Parties & chats.
- Select Discord.
- Choose a server, then an available voice channel.
- Review the participant preview and join.
The release built on Xbox’s earlier Discord integration, which had introduced account linking and a phone-assisted transfer flow through Xbox Insider testing in 2022. The November release moved the channel-browsing and joining step onto the console itself.

Noise suppression on Series X|S
Discord Voice on Xbox Series X|S included noise suppression. Users could turn it off from the call options. Microsoft’s announcement specifically described this feature for Series X|S; it did not extend the statement to Xbox One.
Captures became a separate management app
New locations and controls
The update added a dedicated Captures app, accessible from the Guide and from My games & apps. It provided improved ways to view, organize, and edit game clips and screenshots instead of treating captures only as individual items in the console interface.

Copying clips to an external drive
Captures could be copied to an external drive from the app. Microsoft’s announcement called the storage device an “external drive” but did not specify a required capacity, connector, performance level, or guaranteed-compatible model. The drive was optional; the update itself was console software and did not require new hardware.
Higher Series X|S capture bitrate
Xbox Insider Delta preview notes published October 27, 2022 reported up to a 30% increase in bitrate for 720p and 1080p captures on Xbox Series X|S. That percentage belongs to the preview notes, not an independent test. The final November announcement confirmed increased bitrate for those resolutions without repeating the 30% figure.

The update expanded the Microsoft Store wish list. A recipient could be notified when someone shared a wish list and sent a gift, while users could also receive notifications when items on their own wish list went on sale. The announcement did not provide additional regional, account, or promotional terms, so availability should be understood as tied to Microsoft’s store and account rules at the time.

| Sleep | Faster startup and wake behavior than Shutdown. | No numeric power-use figure. |
New Xbox Series X|S consoles defaulted to Shutdown mode in this release. Owners could change the setting in the console’s power options. Microsoft supplied the comparison but not laboratory measurements, so the update does not support a specific wattage or percentage-savings claim.

The update added direct console streaming destinations for Twitch, Lightstream, and Streamlabs Studio. At the same time, the Twitch Xbox app shifted to a viewing-only role, while broadcasting was handled through the console’s streaming flow. The announcement did not establish subscription prices, regional availability, or partner terms for any of these services.

Bottom line for the 2022 release
Microsoft’s November 16, 2022 update made Xbox a more self-contained social and content-creation platform: Discord voice channels could be joined from the Guide, captures had a dedicated management app with external-drive export, and Series X|S 720p and 1080p recording received a preview-documented bitrate increase of up to 30%. Wish-list alerts, power-mode information, and direct streaming destinations rounded out the release.
