It does not add a new performance tier or a separate game library. With Switch 2 now available, the OLED makes the most sense for someone who wants the existing Switch library and expects to play away from a TV often; it is a harder sell for a mostly docked player or someone choosing between generations.
What changes on the Switch OLED?
Nintendo announced the OLED Model in 2021 as another way to play the Switch library, not as a new generation of games. The screen is the central change, with several practical refinements around it.

- 7-inch OLED display: The larger screen uses OLED rather than the standard Switch’s 6.2-inch LCD. OLED’s contrast can make colors and dark scenes look more vivid, but handheld resolution remains 720p.
- Wide adjustable stand: The redesigned stand spans the back of the console and adjusts to different viewing angles, making tabletop play more convenient than relying on the standard model’s small stand.
- 64GB internal storage: The OLED Model doubles the standard Switch’s 32GB internal storage. Download sizes and available space vary by game; a microSD card can still be useful for a large digital library.
- Enhanced audio: Nintendo describes improved audio for handheld and tabletop play. This is a built-in speaker improvement, not a performance upgrade to the game itself.
- Dock with wired LAN: The included dock has a wired LAN port; the LAN cable is sold separately. This is useful for a wired network connection when the console is docked.
Nintendo introduced the model at a U.S. suggested retail price of $349.99, with a release date of October 8, 2021. That is its launch MSRP, not a current price recommendation.
Does the OLED Switch run games better?
No performance increase is established by Nintendo’s OLED-model specifications. Nintendo’s launch materials focus on the screen, stand, storage, audio and dock, rather than presenting a faster processor or graphics class. The same Switch game can look more striking on the OLED screen, especially in handheld play, without running at a higher resolution or frame rate because of the screen change.
#1 Best Overall
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
Think of it as a refinement to how you see and use the original Switch, not a way to make demanding games run better. If a game’s performance is the reason you are considering an upgrade, the OLED Model is not the answer on the evidence Nintendo provides.
Is the OLED Model better for handheld gaming?
That is where the difference is most visible. You look directly at the larger OLED display during handheld play, and tabletop players benefit from both the wider stand and the improved built-in audio. The 7-inch panel also gives the original Switch experience more screen area without changing its handheld resolution.
Rank #2
- Vivid 7” OLED screen
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- 64 GB internal storage (a portion of which is reserved for use by the system)
- Enhanced audio in handheld and tabletop modes
- Wide adjustable stand
The advantage is less significant if the console spends most of its time in its dock. In TV mode, the game is shown on the television rather than the console’s OLED panel, so the screen upgrade does not improve the image on your TV. Storage and the wired-LAN dock may still matter to you, but they are narrower reasons to choose this model.
Switch OLED or Switch 2: which should you buy?
These are different choices, not two versions of the same performance tier. The OLED Model is a more polished way to play the Switch generation’s library. Switch 2 is the successor platform, released June 5, 2025. Nintendo announced a U.S. suggested retail price of $449.99 for Switch 2 and reported more than 3.5 million systems sold globally in its first four days.

Nintendo’s Switch-family compatibility guidance includes the OLED Model, while noting game-specific exceptions. Check a particular game’s compatibility if it matters to your purchase. The OLED Model should not be treated as a substitute for Switch 2 hardware or as a way to access Switch 2-exclusive software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Switch OLED worth it?
It is most compelling when you will regularly use the console’s built-in screen. The larger OLED display is a direct, everyday benefit in handheld mode; the stand and audio also improve tabletop use. If the price difference from a standard Switch is small where you shop, those refinements can make the OLED Model the more comfortable choice for a new Switch-family purchase.
For a mostly docked setup, the screen contributes little to your experience. The OLED Model’s other changes may not justify paying much more if you already own a working Switch. And if you are deciding whether to buy into the original Switch generation or its successor, compare current local prices and the games you want before treating an older model’s launch MSRP as a bargain.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Glossy white dock with Hylian illustrations
- Hardware with designs from the game
- 7-inch OLED screen. Enjoy vivid colors and crisp contrast with a screen that makes colors pop
- Freely angle the system’s wide, adjustable stand for comfortable viewing in Tabletop mode
- Use the dock’s LAN port when playing in TV mode for a wired internet connection (LAN cable sold separately)
How to make the buying decision
- Start with where you play. Frequent handheld or tabletop use points toward OLED; mostly TV play weakens its main advantage.
- Choose the platform before the screen. If you want the Switch library, OLED is a refined Switch option. If you want the successor platform, compare Switch 2 instead.
- Check the game you care about. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance covers the Switch family but has game-specific exceptions; verify any important title.
- Compare current local prices. Retail prices vary by region and date. Nintendo’s May 2026 Japan notice lists a revised OLED Model MSRP of ¥47,980; that Japanese price does not establish pricing elsewhere.
- Only pay for the upgrade you will use. The OLED screen is most valuable away from a TV; storage, audio, stand and wired LAN are secondary conveniences.
