Why Is Artis Impact Crashing on Steam Deck? Try These 7 Fixes

Artis Impact is listed as Playable on Steam Deck, but that is not a crash-free guarantee. Use these seven checks to isolate crashes at launch, in a save, after sleep or across the whole system.

Artis Impact is listed as Playable on Steam Deck, not Verified. If it crashes, start with a full restart and file verification, then test updates and Proton one change at a time. A crash can come from the game files, compatibility setup, a particular save, accessories or software running alongside the game—or, if the whole Deck reboots, a wider system problem.

First note what happens: does the game quit to the Library, freeze after waking from sleep, fail at one particular scene, or reboot the Deck? That distinction helps you choose the right fix instead of changing several settings at once.

Identify what kind of crash you have

What happens Start by checking
It returns to the Library immediately after you press Play. Game files, Proton selection and per-game compatibility data.
The first launch fails or appears stuck while setting up. Allow setup to finish, then restart the Deck and try again.
It crashes at the same scene or only with one save. Try an earlier save or a new game to isolate a save or game-state problem.
It crashes after the Deck wakes from sleep. Restart and test without suspending the game.
It happens only with a dock, monitor, Bluetooth controller or other accessory. Disconnect the accessories and launch using the Deck’s built-in controls.
The entire Deck freezes, goes black or reboots. Check whether other games or SteamOS are also unstable; this may not be an Artis Impact-only crash.

If the game simply exits to the Library, that is different from a system reboot. Keep track of which one occurs as you try the fixes below.

Is Artis Impact supported on Steam Deck?

Steam’s compatibility category for Artis Impact is Playable, rather than Verified. Playable means the game works on Deck but may require adjustments; it is not a promise that every game update, SteamOS release, Proton version or save will be crash-free. SteamDB’s compatibility record reports a successful SteamOS test, legible text, a functional default controller configuration and good performance with default graphics settings. It also notes that controller glyphs may not match the Deck and that external controllers can require manual selection.

  • 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32

That record reflects a test performed on August 6, 2025, against game build 19460998, with Proton 9.0-4RC listed as the recommended runtime. It is a useful baseline, not a guarantee for a later build or every Deck. The game launched on Steam on August 7, 2025; its store page lists Windows minimum requirements of 4 GB RAM and a DirectX 9/OpenGL 4.1-capable GPU, with 8 GB RAM recommended. Those modest requirements make a lack of raw performance an unlikely first explanation on a healthy, unmodified Deck, but they do not rule out compatibility or system problems.

Fix 1: Restart the Deck and Steam

A restart is the quickest low-risk way to clear a stuck game process or temporary session problem, including one that appeared after sleep.

  1. Exit Artis Impact if it still responds.
  2. Press the Steam button, choose Power, then Restart.
  3. After the Deck starts, launch the game before opening plugins, overlays or other utilities.

If the Deck is completely frozen, holding the physical power button for about 10 seconds can force it off. Use that only to recover from a hard freeze: unsaved progress may be lost.

Fix 2: Verify the game files

Missing or damaged installation files can cause crashes. Steam’s file-verification instructions recommend checking the installation before reinstalling.

  1. Open Library and select Artis Impact.
  2. Open the gear menu or the Menu/three-dot button, then choose Properties.
  3. Choose Installed Files, then Verify integrity of game files.
  4. Wait for Steam to finish, restart the Deck, and test the game again.

Steam may report that one or more files failed validation because local configuration files are not meant to be replaced. That message alone does not mean the repair failed; let Steam finish and check whether it reacquires files.

Fix 3: Update the game and SteamOS

Install any pending Artis Impact download in Steam, then check for a SteamOS update under Steam → Settings → System, in the current Software Updates section. Labels can change between SteamOS releases, so use the update section shown on your Deck. Restart after updates complete. Steam’s Steam Deck troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking for system updates.

If the crash started immediately after an update, do not assume that update is definitively the cause. First test the default Proton selection, then one alternative as described below. SteamOS rollback is a recovery option for suspected system-level regressions, not a routine way to undo a game update.

Fix 4: Test Proton one version at a time

Proton lets Windows games run on SteamOS. Changing it is a controlled compatibility test, not a guaranteed fix. Steam’s Deck guidance describes forcing a compatibility tool and suggests trying a newer Proton version when troubleshooting.

  1. On the game’s Library page, open Properties → Compatibility.
  2. First leave Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool unchecked and test the default.
  3. If it still crashes, enable that option and try the newest stable Proton version available on the Deck.
  4. Fully exit the game, then test Proton Experimental as a separate trial if needed.
  5. Record which selection you used and whether the failure was at launch, loading or during play. Keep the setting that works best; if a change makes launching worse, uncheck the option to return to the default.

Test only one version at a time. Forcing a different compatibility tool can leave the game using a different Proton prefix, and Steam warns that forcing Proton may prompt a Windows-version download when a Linux version would otherwise be installed. Avoid starting with an unofficial community build: it adds another variable without establishing that it addresses this crash.

  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

Fix 5: Run a clean test without plugins or accessories

Third-party software, overlays and connected hardware can complicate troubleshooting. Steam’s Deck guidance recommends closing or disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode and restarting when Steam-launched apps are unstable.

  1. Restart the Deck.
  2. For the test, do not open Decky Loader plugins, recording tools, performance overlays, compatibility utilities or other nonessential background software.
  3. Disconnect the dock, external display, Bluetooth controller and other nonessential accessories.
  4. Launch Artis Impact directly from Gaming Mode and use the Deck’s built-in controls.
  5. If the game is stable, reconnect accessories or re-enable software one at a time until you identify whether one coincides with the crash.

A single successful run does not prove which component was responsible. Repeat the same activity that used to trigger the crash before drawing a conclusion.

Fix 6: Isolate a save or storage problem before reinstalling

Test whether the crash follows a save

If the game repeatedly fails at one scene or after loading one save, test an earlier save or start a new game. If the new game works while the original save fails at the same point, the issue may be tied to that save or game state; preserve the failing save and note the scene rather than deleting it.

Check where the game is installed

Make sure the internal drive or microSD card has free space, and avoid interrupting game downloads, updates or file verification. If the game is installed on microSD and you can do so conveniently, testing a fresh installation on the internal SSD can help isolate storage from the game itself. No game-specific free-space threshold is established, so there is no reliable minimum number to prescribe here.

Back up data before a reinstall or prefix reset

The Steam store lists Artis Impact as supporting Steam Cloud, but Cloud support does not guarantee that every local save or configuration is synced. Confirm synchronization and, if possible, make a separate save backup before reinstalling or clearing compatibility data. The exact local save path is not established here, so do not delete folders based on a guessed location.

Clearing the game’s Proton compatibility data is an advanced option only after file verification and Proton testing. It can remove per-game settings, installed runtime components and potentially local save data. If you cannot verify that your saves are backed up, contact the developer before clearing it. A clean reinstall should likewise come after lower-risk checks, not before them.

Fix 7: Check whether SteamOS or the Deck is the real problem

If several unrelated games crash, the Deck reboots or hard-locks, or problems occur outside games, stop treating this as only an Artis Impact issue. A full restart, system update and clean test without third-party applications can help narrow it down. Persistent instability may involve SteamOS, storage, thermals or hardware; the game’s compatibility status cannot diagnose those causes.

For suspected system-level regressions or serious SteamOS problems, consult Steam’s recovery guidance before taking action. It covers rollback, factory reset, erasing user data and re-imaging. These are not equivalent: some recovery choices erase data. Read the relevant instructions and back up important files before proceeding; do not factory-reset or re-image the Deck merely because one game crashed.

For a reproducible crash that remains limited to this game, use Steam’s Artis Impact technical-support route or report it to the developer. Include the Deck model (LCD or OLED), SteamOS version, game build if available, Proton selection, installation location, whether a new save also crashes, the exact trigger and whether the Deck quits to Library or reboots. Note whether the crash began after an update and attach relevant screenshots or logs if available. For broader Deck instability, use the Steam Deck support route.
