A separate report citing anonymous sources offered a more contentious explanation: Sarah Bond was not chosen to replace him because some people inside Microsoft reportedly questioned whether the push to bring Xbox games to more devices was serving the console business. That account has not been confirmed by Microsoft, and the company’s financial results show a mixed picture—not a collapse of Xbox as a whole.
What changed at the top of Xbox
On February 20, 2026, Microsoft named Asha Sharma executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, reporting to CEO Satya Nadella. Matt Booty became executive vice president and chief content officer. Phil Spencer retired after 38 years at Microsoft and stayed on in an advisory role during the transition through the summer. Sarah Bond left the company; contemporaneous reporting described her as an adviser during the transition. Microsoft’s announcement did not describe an immediate restructuring of its studios organization.
That distinction matters: the announcement changed leadership, but did not announce mass studio closures or an immediate overhaul of the content division. Microsoft later said the organization became known as XBOX and Sharma’s title became CEO XBOX on April 23, 2026. Microsoft’s announcement
Why Sarah Bond reportedly did not get the job
Microsoft did not publicly say Bond was fired, that her strategy had failed, or that she was passed over for performance reasons. Those explanations come from a report by Tom Warren, summarized by Thurrott, that relied on sources familiar with the company. They should be read as reporting about internal views, not as an official finding or proof of a company-wide consensus.

The reported disagreement over “Xbox everywhere”
According to Warren’s sources, Bond was associated with expanding Xbox beyond its consoles, including through mobile, cloud gaming and releases on other platforms. Some employees reportedly felt that this approach emphasized potential new audiences at the expense of existing console players. The sources also said the strategy had not delivered the expected increase in Xbox mindshare and that it had been questioned internally.
The same account included anonymous criticism of Bond’s management style, while acknowledging strengths in partnerships and developer relationships. The available evidence does not establish how much of the broader strategy Bond controlled, whether those criticisms were widely shared, or that she personally caused Xbox’s hardware difficulties. Why the announcement came on a Friday
The report says Microsoft had planned to announce the leadership changes the following Monday but moved them forward after the news leaked and IGN was preparing to publish. That timing explanation is attributed to the report’s sources; it is not part of Microsoft’s public announcement. The account also says it is misleading to treat protecting Microsoft’s stock price as the established reason for the timing.
What Microsoft said—and did not say
Microsoft’s public message framed Spencer’s departure as a planned retirement and Bond’s exit as the start of a new chapter. It credited Bond with work across Game Pass, cloud gaming, platform strategy and hardware launches. Sharma’s appointment was presented in terms of her consumer-platform and operating experience, while Booty’s new role recognized his gaming and studio expertise.

Sharma set out three priorities: “great games,” “the return of Xbox,” and “the future of play.” Her message also backed continued expansion across devices, including PC, mobile and cloud, alongside renewed attention to console players. The official statement did not confirm that Bond had been dismissed, that her approach had formally been judged a failure, or that Microsoft was abandoning cross-platform publishing or cloud gaming. What Microsoft’s financial results show
The reported internal doubts came amid real pressure on Xbox hardware, but Microsoft’s results do not support reducing the story to “Xbox is failing.” The figures show a split between hardware and the broader content-and-services business.

| Period | Gaming revenue | Xbox content and services | Xbox hardware revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft fiscal year 2025 | Up 9% ($2 billion) | Up 16% | Down 25%, attributed to lower console volume |
| Microsoft fiscal 2026 first quarter | Down 2% | Up 1% | Down 29%, attributed to lower console volume |
Microsoft reported these year-over-year changes in its FY2025 fourth-quarter results and FY2026 first-quarter results. Hardware weakness is clear, while content and services grew in FY2025 and were slightly higher in FY2026 Q1. Growth in content and services does not by itself prove that cross-platform strategy succeeded: those results reflect the broader business, and the figures alone do not isolate the effect of any one strategy or product.

“Xbox everywhere” can work as a software-distribution strategy while creating a harder question for the hardware business. Selling games and services to people on more devices can expand the audience and reduce dependence on console sales. But if players can get the same experiences elsewhere, some may see less reason to buy an Xbox. The challenge for Microsoft is to grow the wider ecosystem without making its own console feel peripheral.
Best Value
A console-centered emphasis
- Potential upside: Renewed focus could reassure console owners, sharpen the reason to choose Xbox hardware and support the console storefront and accessories.
- Trade-off: A narrower audience could limit software sales and make costly game development more dependent on console adoption.
A broader, cross-platform approach
- Potential upside: Releasing games across platforms can reach more players and give Microsoft-owned titles a larger audience, including games from acquired publishers.
- Trade-off: It can weaken the incentive to buy Xbox hardware, frustrate customers who value exclusives and make the Xbox brand’s purpose less clear.
A subscription-led approach
- Potential upside: Subscriptions can create recurring revenue, lower the barrier to trying games and connect console, PC and cloud audiences.
- Trade-off: The model depends on a dependable stream of appealing releases, makes catalog and pricing decisions consequential, and may compete with full-price sales.
These approaches are not mutually exclusive. Sharma’s “return of Xbox” language and her support for access across devices point toward a possible rebalancing: restore the console’s importance within a wider gaming platform, rather than retreat to a console-only business. That is an interpretation of the stated priorities, not a confirmed change to Microsoft’s release policy.
What the reset could mean for consoles, Game Pass and cloud gaming
Consoles and future hardware
Sharma’s renewed emphasis on console players signals a change in tone and priority. It does not establish that Microsoft has canceled, redesigned or changed the roadmap for its next-generation hardware. The leadership announcement confirms a new emphasis, not a hardware plan.
Game Pass and cloud gaming
Microsoft credited Bond with expanding both Game Pass and cloud gaming, and its reported content-and-services growth is consistent with the continued importance of those businesses. Nothing in the announcement confirms a change to subscription pricing, tiers, day-one releases or cloud access. It would be premature to treat the leadership reset as a rejection of subscriptions or streaming.
The planned Xbox mobile store
Warren’s report says Bond was associated with a planned Xbox mobile gaming store that did not launch on its expected timetable. It also says Microsoft was no longer actively discussing that store, while the Xbox mobile app added support for purchases of Xbox games and Game Pass. The report does not establish why the store was delayed, so it is not evidence that Microsoft’s entire mobile strategy failed.
What remains unsettled
- Whether Game Pass pricing, tiers or day-one release policy will change.
- Whether Microsoft will publish games on rival consoles at the same pace.
- Whether next-generation Xbox hardware plans or internal reporting lines will change.
- Whether the mobile store will return, and what role cloud and mobile will play in reaching console customers.
The distinction to keep in view is between Microsoft’s confirmed leadership change and the anonymous-source account of why Bond did not succeed Spencer. The reported criticism helps explain the debate around Xbox’s direction, but the public evidence points to a strategic tension—not proof that one executive or one distribution choice caused the console’s decline.
