On either Xbox Series X or Series S, open Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → System → Language & location. Choose a new Language, optionally set Language region, select Restart now, and the dashboard will use the new language. Leave Location alone unless you genuinely need to change the console’s country or Microsoft Store region.
Change the Xbox Series X|S interface language
Microsoft uses the same Xbox operating-system settings path on both consoles. The current labels are documented in its Xbox and Microsoft Store region guidance.
- Turn on the console and sign in.
- Press the Xbox button on your controller.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Choose System.
- Open Language & location.
- Under Language, select the language you want for the dashboard, Guide, Settings, notifications and other Xbox system text.
- Use Language region if you need a regional variant, such as US or UK English, and one is offered.
- Keep Location unchanged unless you need to move the console to another country or region.
- Select Restart now. The language change is applied after the restart.
After the console starts again, open the dashboard and Settings to confirm that the interface is displayed in the selected language.
Language, language region and location are different settings

If you only want Spanish, French, German or another interface language, changing Location is normally unnecessary.

When changing Location is appropriate—and what it can affect
Microsoft recommends changing country or region when you move for a long period, rather than using it as a routine language switch. A location change requires a restart and can have account and content consequences.
- Store content and region-specific services may differ.
- Microsoft says account funds do not transfer between regions; spend your balance before changing regions.
- Your first purchase in the new locale may require updated billing information.
- Subscriptions, games, apps and movies can have region-specific availability or compatibility limits. Content obtained in one region may not work in another.
For the official warnings and current instructions, see Microsoft Support. Do not change Location simply to obtain a different menu language.

Change the language of a particular game
Xbox’s system language does not guarantee that every game will change its text or spoken audio. Localization is title-specific: a game may support only selected languages, separate subtitle and voice choices, or no translation at all.
- Open the game’s Settings, Options, Accessibility, Audio or Language menu.
- Check separately for display text, subtitles and voice/audio language.
- If the game has no language control, set the Xbox Language and, when relevant, Language region, then restart the console and relaunch the game.
- Confirm that the title and your edition or game package support the desired language. Digital and disc editions can differ.
- Only reinstall or download a language pack if the publisher’s documentation specifically requires it; consult the publisher when the setting is unavailable.
If the console is in a language you cannot read
You can still use the controller’s layout and familiar visual landmarks. Press the Xbox button to open the Guide, move to the profile/system area (the account avatar), select the gear-shaped Settings icon, then find the system settings entry corresponding to Language & location. Choose the target language and restart. If you know the target language, its equivalent labels may be easier to recognize than the current ones. The Xbox mobile setup or companion experience can provide secondary guidance, but it cannot always change the language of an already-configured console remotely.

When the change does not apply
- Return to System → Language & location and verify that you changed Language, not only Language region or Location.
- Select Restart now; merely returning to the dashboard is not enough.
- After the restart, relaunch the game or app.
- Check the title’s own language controls and confirm that it supports the chosen language.
- If the interface is only partly translated, check both Language and Language region. Some untranslated text may belong to an individual app or game.
- If Store content looks wrong after a Location change, restore the previous Location and restart.
- On a family-managed or organizational console, check whether restrictions prevent settings changes.
- Contact Xbox Support if the setting repeatedly reverts or the console cannot complete the restart or update process.
A factory reset is not an appropriate first fix for a language-setting problem because it creates unnecessary setup and data risk.
