Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The right fix depends on where the corruption begins: in one game, across native Quest apps, or in the PC VR rendering and streaming path. First check whether the issue appears in a native Quest game or only through PC VR, then compare games, connection methods, and the PC mirror before changing settings or buying hardware.
Identify what the artifact looks like
“Graphics glitches” can describe several different problems. Their appearance is a clue, not a diagnosis: ordinary compression, low render resolution, dynamic resolution, and reprojection can soften or distort an image without indicating a defective display.
| What you see | Areas to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Blocky or mosaic-like breakup that changes during movement | For PC VR, investigate video compression, bitrate stability, encoder load, and the connection. Low resolution or dynamic resolution can also look blocky. |
| Horizontal lines, tearing, or corrupted bands | Consider the GPU, driver, encoder, compositor, or Link transport; the symptom alone does not identify which. |
| Shimmering or crawling edges | Check render resolution, supersampling, anti-aliasing, sharpening, reprojection, and the game’s rendering behavior. |
| Texture flicker or surfaces that appear to overlap in one scene | Look first at that game’s assets or rendering, especially if other titles are clean. |
| Black patches, missing geometry, or a black screen | Check the game, graphics driver, OpenXR or SteamVR path, and PC rendering. Compare another title and the PC mirror. |
| Blur that follows head movement or comes and goes | For streamed PC VR, investigate bandwidth, dropped frames, dynamic resolution, or reprojection before assuming panel damage. |
| Similar corruption in the headset home environment and multiple apps | Check headset software and thermal conditions; persistent cross-app corruption merits documentation and Meta support. |
A normal-looking PC mirror does not rule out a PC VR problem. The headset may receive a corrupted or differently composited stream even while the monitor view looks fine; that observation narrows the possibilities but does not prove the headset is faulty. A Meta community report illustrates the mirror-versus-headset distinction.
Start by separating native Quest from PC VR
A native Quest game renders on the headset. PC VR is rendered by a computer and sent to the headset through a particular path: wired Meta Quest Link, Air Link, Steam Link, or Virtual Desktop. Those paths use different connection, streaming, and runtime components, so results from one do not automatically diagnose another.

- If the problem is PC VR, identify the path: note whether you use Meta Quest Link by cable, Air Link, Steam Link, or Virtual Desktop, and whether SteamVR is involved.
- Compare one other game: use a second title through the same path. Then, if practical, compare the affected title through another supported path.
- Check the PC mirror: observe whether the same corruption appears on the monitor while it is visible inside the headset.
If a dashboard is already corrupted before a game launches, that makes the game a less likely sole cause. Meta support responses also ask whether the issue is limited to one game, whether another PC works, whether drivers are current, and whether wired Link and Air Link behave differently. See the Meta support discussion.
Capture a useful reproduction before changing settings
A short, specific record helps distinguish a game fault from a headset, PC, or streaming problem. Note:
- Headset model and headset software version.
- Game name, store or platform, and whether it is native Quest or PC VR.
- For PC VR, the connection method and whether SteamVR is part of the launch path.
- Whether one eye or both eyes are affected, and whether the corruption follows a scene or stays in one physical display region.
- Whether the PC mirror shows it.
- Whether it starts immediately or after extended play, and whether a restart clears it.
- For PC VR: GPU model, graphics-driver version, Windows version, and Meta Quest Link app version.
- Whether another native app or PC VR game reproduces the issue.
Capture a photo or video if possible. Describe the actual symptom—such as “blocky breakup after 30 minutes” or “a fixed black rectangle in both eyes”—rather than only saying the graphics look bad.

Run low-risk checks first
- Restart the headset and PC. This can clear a temporary software or streaming state, though a temporary improvement does not establish the underlying cause.
- Check the dashboard before launching a game. If it is already affected, record that fact.
- Return graphics and streaming changes to conservative defaults. Temporarily lower Quest Link render resolution and refresh rate, SteamVR per-application resolution, and in-game supersampling. Turn off experimental sharpening, image enhancement, bitrate overrides, and Oculus Debug Tool or third-party tuning overrides.
- Change one setting at a time and retest. High resolution and refresh rate raise the work required of the GPU and streaming pipeline; reducing them is a diagnostic test, not proof that the problem is solved. Community guidance cautions that maximizing resolution at high refresh rates can produce dropped or missing frames. See the discussion of resolution and refresh-rate trade-offs.
- Compare connection methods where available. If wired Link is affected, try Air Link; if Air Link is affected, try wired Link or another streaming path. Keep the same game and broadly similar render settings for a useful comparison.
If one native Quest game is affected
When other native apps and the headset interface look normal, concentrate on the affected game before changing PC settings.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Restart the headset and check for pending headset and game updates.
- Remove unofficial mods, patches, or other recent changes to the game.
- Reset the game’s graphics options and use its repair or verify function if the platform provides one.
- If needed, reinstall the game, then test the same scene again.
- If the issue remains limited to that title, send the developer a recording, game version, headset model, and steps that reliably reproduce it.
If multiple native Quest apps are affected
Corruption across the home environment and several native apps points away from a single PC streaming path. Restart the headset, install pending software updates, and document whether the issue is present in the system menus as well as games. If it persists across apps, contact Meta support with the headset model, software version, video, and reproduction steps rather than repeatedly adjusting PC graphics settings.
If PC VR games are affected
Check the GPU driver and PC load
Update the GPU driver when it is old or when the GPU vendor has issued a relevant compatibility fix. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, rolling back can be a useful diagnostic comparison; it does not establish a general driver bug. A clean driver installation can help if a routine update leaves damaged components, but may remove custom GPU settings. Do not assume one particular NVIDIA or AMD version is universally responsible based on anecdotal reports.

During a reproduction, check GPU and CPU temperatures, utilization, frame-time spikes, GPU clocks, and memory use. If artifacts begin only after 30–60 minutes, also note headset temperature and ventilation. Delayed onset can be associated with heat, memory pressure, encoder state, or a sustained connection problem; it is not by itself proof of display failure. Users have reported progressive corruption during Link sessions, but those accounts do not establish a single mechanism. See the reported Link-session pattern.
Temporarily remove software conflicts
For a controlled test, exit GPU overlays, recording overlays, performance-tuning utilities, Oculus Tray Tool or similar software, unofficial OpenXR layers, mods, and overclocking or undervolting profiles. If security software may be interfering, use a narrow temporary exclusion or clean-boot test where appropriate, then restore normal protection; uninstalling security software is not a first-line fix.
Check whether SteamVR is the common factor
If only SteamVR titles are affected, test a second SteamVR game, reset SteamVR per-application resolution to 100%, and temporarily disable overlays. SteamVR’s release history includes fixes involving rendering, streaming, OpenXR, AMD compatibility, and individual games, so update or compare the current and beta builds only when there is a specific reason. Review SteamVR release notes.

If wired Meta Quest Link is the only failing path
- Reseat the cable at both ends and try another USB 3.x port. For diagnosis, avoid an unpowered hub and a front-panel port.
- Try another known-good cable if available, and run the Meta Link USB connection test.
- Compare the same game over Air Link or on another compatible PC, if practical. A passing USB test is useful information, but it does not reproduce sustained gameplay, heat, connector movement, or every transfer condition.
- Reset Link resolution and refresh rate to conservative values, then retest without bitrate or encoder overrides.
- If Link remains affected, Meta support has suggested reinstalling its driver: close the Meta Quest Link app, press Windows key + R, enter
C:Program FilesOculusSupportoculus-drivers, openoculus-driver, then reopen the app, reconnect the headset, and retest. Meta support’s Link-driver procedure.
Do not buy a replacement cable solely because a single test fails or passes. A substitute cable is most informative when the problem changes with the cable while the PC, game, and settings remain the same.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Air Link is the only failing path
Air Link depends on the local network between PC and headset; a fast broadband plan does not repair weak or congested local Wi-Fi.
- Connect the gaming PC to the router with Ethernet.
- Test near the router and avoid mesh-node hops, extenders, and congested wireless conditions while isolating the problem.
- Temporarily reduce streaming bitrate and render resolution. Raise bitrate gradually only if the connection remains stable; a higher bitrate can improve compression quality but may increase instability or encoder pressure.
- Restart the router, PC, and headset, then repeat the same scene.
- Compare with wired Link or another streaming method if available.
If artifacts vary by room location, time, movement, or competing network activity, that is more consistent with a wireless streaming issue than with a damaged display panel, though it is not conclusive.

Check the OpenXR and SteamVR launch path
There is no universally correct runtime setting: the right choice depends on how the game is meant to launch. Meta Quest Link is the natural path for games launched through Meta Link; SteamVR is appropriate for games that require SteamVR or a SteamVR-specific path. Steam Link and Virtual Desktop use different streaming integrations and can change runtime behavior.
- Identify the game’s supported VR launch method and whether it requires SteamVR.
- Use that method consistently for the test instead of switching runtimes at random.
- If the game is intended to use SteamVR, check that SteamVR is selected as the OpenXR runtime for that path. A Steam guide also describes setting Meta Quest Link active under the Meta PC app’s General settings when Air Link does not launch SteamVR correctly. See the runtime setup guide.
- Change one runtime setting, restart the relevant apps, and retest the same game. Restore the prior setting if the result worsens.
Use the pattern to choose the next step
| Where the issue appears | Most useful next checks |
|---|---|
| One native Quest game | Game updates, settings, mods, file repair or reinstall, then the game developer. |
| Every native Quest app, including the home environment | Restart and update the headset, record the issue, then contact Meta support if it persists. |
| Only wired Link | Conservative Link settings, another USB port or cable, driver state, and comparison with Air Link. |
| Only Air Link | PC-to-router Ethernet, router proximity, local Wi-Fi conditions, and lower bitrate for testing. |
| Only SteamVR titles | OpenXR/runtime selection, SteamVR resolution, overlays, and a second SteamVR title. |
| Headset image corrupted but PC mirror clean | Investigate the stream, encoder, compositor, transport, and headset-side decode; do not infer a headset hardware fault from the mirror alone. |
| PC mirror and headset both corrupted | Investigate the game, GPU rendering, driver, and PC performance before focusing on wireless transport. |
| Problem appears after extended play | Record time to onset and check temperatures, clocks, memory use, frame times, and whether restarting Link clears it. |
Escalate with evidence, not a guess
Contact Meta support when corruption persists across native apps or across more than one PC VR connection path, especially when it is also visible in system menus. Provide the recording and reproduction notes, headset and software versions, PC specifications and driver version if relevant, and the results of the game, connection, and mirror comparisons. Meta support responses may request logs or further investigation. See an example of support guidance.
A factory reset erases local headset data and settings, so reserve it for persistent software problems after lower-impact checks or when Meta support recommends it. Likewise, consider a new cable, router, or GPU only when controlled comparisons implicate that component; a more powerful GPU cannot repair a game bug, unstable cable, runtime mismatch, or headset fault.
