The original MechCommander Gold installer may fail on Windows 7 64-bit with an “Unsupported 16-bit Application” message. That does not necessarily mean the game itself cannot run: Windows x64 can run many 32-bit programs, but it cannot execute 16-bit Windows programs or installer components. The most practical first fix is to copy the complete contents of your original CD or legally obtained ISO to a writable folder and launch MCX.EXE directly.
Why the installer fails
Windows 7 64-bit runs ordinary 32-bit applications through WOW64, but it does not include the 16-bit Windows support required by some older installers. Microsoft documents this limitation in its 64-bit compatibility guidance and its NTVDM and 16-bit application documentation.
In practice, the error is usually produced by SETUP.EXE or one of its components, not necessarily by every executable in the game directory. Typical messages include “Unsupported 16-bit Application” and “This program or feature cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit Windows.”
Windows compatibility settings can change how an application runs, but they cannot add the missing 16-bit subsystem. Repeatedly setting SETUP.EXE to Windows 98 or Windows XP compatibility therefore usually does not solve this particular failure.

Before you begin
- Use your original MechCommander Gold CD or a legally obtained ISO.
- Have a writable destination outside
C:Program Files;C:GamesMechCommander Goldis a suitable example. - Keep an untouched copy of the disc or ISO. Unofficial patches and wrappers should be tested only after a clean copy works.
- Remember that Windows 7 support ended on January 14, 2020; the steps below address legacy-game behavior on that operating system, not current Microsoft support.
Recommended method: copy the game files and bypass Setup
Community reports describe playing MechCommander Gold by copying the disc contents and starting MCX.EXE without running the obsolete installer. This is a community workaround, not an official Microsoft or publisher-supported installation method. Use the following sequence:
- Insert the original CD or mount your legally created ISO.
- Open the disc in Windows Explorer instead of double-clicking its installer.
- Create
C:GamesMechCommander Gold. - Select every file and folder on the disc and copy them to that destination. Include all data, map, campaign, video, and subdirectory files; copying only
MCX.EXEis insufficient. - Open the copied folder, locate
MCX.EXE, and right-click it. - Choose Properties, open Compatibility, and test Windows XP (Service Pack 2).
- If that does not help, test Windows XP Service Pack 3. If colors or menus are corrupted, also test Reduced color mode.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if the game cannot save configuration or games. Do not make elevation the default unless it is necessary.
- Launch
MCX.EXE.
The compatibility options shown can vary by Windows 7 edition and installed components. No single setting is guaranteed for every release or graphics adapter. Community installation guides also describe prepared game folders and legacy compatibility settings at ModDB’s MechCommander Gold guide and its beginner installation guide.
If the game asks for the CD
A copied folder does not necessarily remove the original disc check. If the game displays “Insert Disk,” keep the original CD in the drive or mount your legally created ISO before launching it.

Another option is a reputable community no-CD patch, but its legal treatment varies by jurisdiction and its executable may be specific to a particular release. Do not download a random “full version” ISO or replacement executable. If you use a community file, verify its source, version, included assets, and licensing. Fix crashes, colors, resolution, and saves
Crashes or failure to start
- Run the copied game from outside protected folders such as
C:Program Files. - Try Windows XP SP2 and then SP3 compatibility on
MCX.EXE. - Disable unnecessary overlays and screen-recording software while testing.
- Test the unmodified game before adding a high-resolution patch, wrapper, or mod.
Rainbow colors, palette corruption, or unreadable menus
Older DirectDraw-era games can display corrupted palettes on Vista and Windows 7 systems. Try Reduced color mode and an older Windows compatibility setting first. Start at the game’s original or a modest resolution, then test higher-resolution modifications only after the clean copy works. These are community-reported remedies and depend on the release and hardware.
Save files or configuration will not write
Move the game to a normal writable folder such as C:GamesMechCommander Gold. Check the folder’s permissions. Use administrator mode as a targeted test rather than a permanent first choice.

Using a graphics wrapper or patch
Make a backup of the untouched game directory, launch it once, and add only one unofficial DLL, patch, or wrapper at a time. Test after each change and record which files were replaced so you can roll back a failing modification.

Install in a 32-bit Windows environment
Microsoft’s guidance for software requiring 16-bit components is to use 32-bit Windows, as explained in its x64 support article. Use a separate 32-bit Windows XP or Windows 7 installation, install from the original media, and then copy the completed game directory to Windows 7 64-bit. This may not transfer registry entries, codecs, disc checks, or editor components cleanly, so it is a fallback rather than a guarantee.

A 32-bit guest operating system can recreate the environment needed by the installer and can be kept separate from the host. Expect possible problems with 3D acceleration, fullscreen display, audio, mouse capture, CD mounting, and video playback. For most players, copying the files is simpler.

Consider a community-prepared portable release
Some community projects distribute configured or patched folders. Before using one, check whether it contains the original game, an expansion, or a mod; whether it requires a mounted ISO; which missions, graphics, or campaign files it changes; and whether you are legally entitled to use the included game assets. ModDB is a community host, not the original publisher.
Mission editor and modding tools
The campaign executable and the mission editor are separate compatibility cases. A copied folder may be enough to play missions while the editor still fails because it expects registry entries, the original installation structure, or additional 32-bit components. Do not treat an editor crash as proof that MCX.EXE cannot run. If editing is essential, use a 32-bit Windows installation or virtual machine and keep the game-play setup separate from experimental tools.
Quick Recap
Quick decision tree
SETUP.EXEreports a 16-bit or x64 incompatibility: bypass Setup and copy the complete disc contents.MCX.EXElaunches: test XP compatibility, reduced colors, resolution, and writable-folder settings.- The game requests the CD: insert the original disc or mount the owned ISO; investigate only reputable, legally appropriate community patches.
MCX.EXEwill not launch: try a clean copy, then a 32-bit Windows installation or virtual machine.- Only the editor fails: treat editor support separately and consider a 32-bit environment.
Final checklist
- Original CD or legally obtained ISO available.
- Every disc file and folder copied, not just
MCX.EXE. - Game stored outside
Program Files. MCX.EXEtested with XP SP2 and SP3 compatibility.- Reduced color mode tested only when display corruption occurs.
- Original media or ISO mounted if a disc check appears.
- Unofficial patches added one at a time with a backup.
- 32-bit Windows reserved for installer, editor, or persistent compatibility failures.
