Gamma – PS 1 Game Emulator reached Apple’s App Store on May 13, 2024. It was widely reported as the first standalone original-PlayStation emulator distributed through the official iPhone and iPad storefront. That does not make it the first PS1 emulator ever usable on iOS: sideloaded and unofficial options existed earlier, and “PlayStation” here means the original PS1/PSX, not PS2, PS3 or PSP.
Gamma is made by ZODTTD LLC and remains available for iPhone and iPad running iOS 15 or later. The free download contains advertising and optional purchases, and it is not affiliated with Sony or PlayStation. Contemporary launch coverage and the current App Store listing establish the milestone and the app’s present feature set.
What “first” means
The defensible claim is: Gamma was the first widely reported standalone PS1 emulator on Apple’s official App Store for iPhone and iPad.
- It was not necessarily the first PS1 emulator technically capable of running on an iOS device.
- It was not the first emulator of any kind on iOS.
- It was not the first PlayStation emulator on Apple hardware; Mac emulation predates the iPhone release.
Apple’s 2024 policy change opened the App Store to emulator apps, making normal App Store installation possible instead of requiring developer certificates, sideloading tools or other unofficial routes.

What Gamma is—and is not
Gamma emulates the original Sony PlayStation, commonly called PS1 or PSX. It does not claim to emulate PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, modern PlayStation consoles or PSP. The listing identifies ZODTTD LLC as the developer, supports iPhone and iPad on iOS 15 or later, and lists Apple-silicon Mac compatibility. Gamma states that it is independent of Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation, PPSSPP, Delta, Folium and RetroArch.
Installation is free, but the app includes advertising and optional in-app purchases. Availability, ratings and purchase amounts can vary by country storefront; for example, regional listings expose different prices for the ad-removal purchase.
What it can run and how it works
Gamma does not include commercial games. You provide compatible disc images that you are legally entitled to use, then import them through iOS Files or Gamma’s import workflow.

Supported game-image formats
- CUE/BIN
- CHD
- ISO
- PBP
- MDS
- ZIP, 7z, RAR and ECM archives where supported by the current release
For a multi-track CUE/BIN dump, keep the CUE sheet and every referenced track in the same folder. Import the CUE file, not just one BIN track. Renaming a track without editing the CUE sheet can make the image fail to load.

A BIOS is neither universally required nor universally unnecessary. Gamma’s release notes say that more games can run without one and that some titles no longer require a BIOS, while other games may require or work better with a compatible file. Follow Gamma’s own compatibility guidance for the specific title and use only BIOS firmware you are legally entitled to possess.
Multi-disc games
Large games may appear as separate disc images. Keep every disc, use Gamma’s multi-disc function and follow the documented disc-swap controls for that title. The exact swap process can vary by game and app version.

Gamma’s main features

These are listing features, not a guarantee that every game behaves perfectly. Gamma’s updates have addressed individual import, graphics, audio, controller and compatibility problems, which indicates broad but not absolute compatibility.
Setting up a legally owned game
- Install Gamma from its official App Store listing.
- Create or obtain a lawful dump of a PS1 disc you own, or use another source that grants you the necessary rights.
- Keep the disc image in a supported format such as BIN/CUE, CHD, ISO, PBP or MDS. Preserve all files referenced by a CUE sheet.
- Open Gamma’s import workflow or the iOS Files picker and select the appropriate image file.
- Add a legally obtained BIOS only if the game or Gamma’s compatibility information calls for one.
- Pair a controller if the game depends on analog sticks, shoulder buttons or rapid combinations.
- Configure memory cards before starting a long game. Use save states for convenience, but retain ordinary memory-card saves for durable progress.
This process does not authorize downloading commercial ROM libraries, BIOS packages or copyrighted game files from unauthorized sites.
Are touch controls good enough?
They make Gamma usable without extra hardware, but the original PlayStation library frequently expects precise directional input, shoulder buttons or analog control. Touch is a reasonable fit for turn-based RPGs, menu-heavy adventures and slower sessions. Racing games, fighting games, platformers and titles with constant shoulder-button use are usually more comfortable with a physical controller.

A phone-mounted controller is convenient for iPhone play. A Bluetooth or wired pad is more flexible if you also use an iPad, Mac or Apple TV. Contemporary coverage specifically identified controllers as an important complement to Gamma’s touch interface.

A CUE/BIN game will not load
- Import the CUE file rather than a single BIN track.
- Keep the CUE and every track in one folder.
- Check that filenames inside the CUE sheet exactly match the track files.
- Verify that the dump is complete; if appropriate, try a CHD, ISO or PBP version.
A game has glitches, freezes or a black screen
Update Gamma, verify the disc dump, try legacy compatibility mode where available and consult the app’s title-specific compatibility information. Gamma’s release notes document fixes for clipped graphics, black-screen freezes, SBI handling and individual game problems.
A controller has missing buttons or bad diagonals
- Update Gamma.
- Disconnect and re-pair the controller.
- Test both portrait and landscape layouts.
- Try the on-screen controls to separate an emulator problem from a controller problem.
- Use a different profile or a wired/MFi connection if your hardware supports it.
Saves seem to have disappeared
A save state is an emulator snapshot and can be more sensitive to app versions or settings. A memory-card save follows the original console model and is the better long-term record. Gamma’s listing describes per-game cards and memory-card import/export, so export or back up cards before a major update or device migration.

Is Gamma still worth using?
Choose Gamma when
- You want a dedicated PS1-focused interface from the ordinary App Store.
- You value cover art, save states, memory-card tools and controller support.
- You already have legally obtained PS1 disc images.
- Your iPhone or iPad runs iOS 15 or newer.
Look elsewhere when
- You want multiple console generations in one library.
- You do not want advertising or optional purchases.
- You expect every title to work without configuration.
- You are looking for PS2, PS3, PSP or modern PlayStation emulation.
- You expect games to be supplied with the emulator.
Provenance for a broader library
Provenance lists original PlayStation support on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV alongside Atari, Nintendo, Sega, Sony and other systems. It is the more natural choice for a multi-system collection; Gamma is simpler when PS1 is the main objective.
Sideloaded emulators
Sideloading can offer additional software, but certificates, installation, updates, trust settings and support become part of the maintenance burden. App Store distribution is easier for ordinary users, even though preparing lawful game files still requires file management.
The bottom line on the 2024 milestone
Gamma did not invent PS1 emulation on Apple devices. Its significance was distribution: on May 13, 2024, a standalone PS1 emulator became available through Apple’s official iPhone and iPad storefront. Today it remains a practical dedicated option, provided you supply your own lawful game files and understand that compatibility, BIOS needs and touch-control quality vary by title.
