FIFA 23 is currently listed as Unsupported on Steam Deck and SteamOS. If the game closes at launch, stops at the EA App, or fails at EA AntiCheat, changing resolution, reinstalling repeatedly, or buying a dock usually will not solve the underlying problem. For reliable local play, use Windows on the Deck; otherwise stream the game from a Windows PC with Steam Remote Play.
The real reason FIFA 23 crashes on Steam Deck
As of August 18, 2026, Steam metadata lists FIFA 23 as unsupported on Steam Deck because of an unsupported anti-cheat or multiplayer service. The configuration identifies EA AntiCheat and the EA App as part of the game’s setup. See the current listing at SteamDB.
SteamOS is Linux-based, so Steam runs Windows games through Proton. Proton can translate many game and graphics calls, but anti-cheat support also requires the game’s developer and publisher to enable and configure compatibility. Valve’s Proton documentation explains that requirement at Steamworks.
Valve’s FIFA 23 compatibility report attributes the launch problem to EA AntiCheat incompatibility. A workaround that reaches an offline menu does not establish supported online play, as documented in ValveSoftware/Proton issue #6388. This is a platform-compatibility barrier, not evidence that the Deck’s GPU, RAM, or resolution is too weak.

First, identify which failure you have
Note the last screen or exact error before changing settings. The symptom determines whether ordinary file checks are worth trying.

Confirm the operating system
Open the Deck’s system information and establish whether FIFA 23 is running under the default SteamOS or a Windows installation. Valve describes SteamOS and its software stack at the Steam Deck software page. Windows can be installed alongside SteamOS using the Deck’s multi-boot capability; Valve’s guidance is at the Steam Deck FAQ.
Also record the exact error, whether the EA App opens, whether an anti-cheat splash screen appears, whether the main menu loads, whether offline play differs from online play, the SteamOS and Proton versions, and whether the copy was installed through Steam.
Safe SteamOS checks worth trying
These checks can repair a damaged installation or a general launcher problem. They do not make EA AntiCheat supported on SteamOS.
- Restart the Deck.
- Install pending SteamOS and Steam client updates.
- Go to Library → FIFA 23 → gear icon → Properties → Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files, wait for it to finish, and reboot.
- Test once with mods, trainers, overlay tools, launch customizations, and external launcher tweaks removed.
Use Proton versions only as a diagnostic
For a nonstandard or partial setup, open FIFA 23 → Properties → Compatibility, enable Force the use of a specific compatibility tool, and test installed Proton versions one at a time. Record whether the symptom changes.

Proton Experimental, Proton GE, or an older build must not be treated as guaranteed fixes. A different version can alter the visible error without removing the EA AntiCheat restriction documented at ValveSoftware/Proton issue #6388.
What not to do
- Do not disable, replace, or evade EA AntiCheat.
- Do not download modified anti-cheat files or unknown scripts.
- Do not assume that reaching an offline menu means Ultimate Team or other online modes work.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall the game without first identifying the failure stage.
- Do not treat installing the EA App in Desktop Mode as a supported FIFA 23 environment; a launcher that opens does not prove that the game or anti-cheat will run.
- Do not expect docking to improve performance. Valve says docking is essentially like connecting a USB-C hub; see the FAQ.
The dependable ways to play FIFA 23 on a Deck
Install Windows for local play
Windows is the credible local route when FIFA 23 itself is the priority. Use this sequence:
- Back up important SteamOS data.
- Use Valve’s documented multi-boot approach or a properly prepared internal or external drive.
- Download Windows from Microsoft’s official page: Windows 11 download. Installation requires a valid Windows license; the page currently shows Windows 11 version 25H2.
- Install the necessary Steam Deck Windows drivers from Valve’s official Windows resources.
- Install Steam and the EA App, then install or locate FIFA 23.
- Run Windows Update and update drivers before diagnosing the game.
- Install or repair EA Javelin AntiCheat through EA’s official PC instructions at EA Help.
- Test without mods, overlays, or controller remappers.
Windows may make the game launchable, but it does not guarantee perfect performance, battery life, suspend/resume behavior, controller mapping, or long-term compatibility. It also requires more setup and provides less of the console-like SteamOS experience.
Stream from a Windows gaming PC
Install FIFA 23 on the Windows host, sign in to Steam on both devices, and start Steam Remote Play. The host PC runs the game; the Deck receives video and audio and sends input back. Valve describes the feature at Steam Remote Play and lists PC-to-Deck streaming at the Steam Deck software page.
- You need a running host PC.
- Experience depends on Wi-Fi, network latency, and host performance.
- Online responsiveness can be worse than local play.
- This is a streaming solution, not a native SteamOS fix.
Consider another platform or football game
If keeping SteamOS matters more than FIFA 23 specifically, use another supported football title or play FIFA 23 on a platform where its anti-cheat and online services are supported. NVIDIA provides a Steam Deck installation path for GeForce NOW at its official support page, but that page does not establish that FIFA 23 is currently in the service’s catalog. Check availability, EA-account requirements, and plan limits before relying on cloud gaming.

Common claims that need qualification
“It worked before”
Past launches may have depended on a particular EA App, game build, SteamOS release, or Proton version. Historical reports are version-specific and do not establish current support.
“ProtonDB says it works”
Check whether the report specifies the game build, SteamOS version, Proton version, date, and online or offline status. A report may describe an old workaround, a non-Steam installation, or an offline launch without working online modes.

“The crash started after changing resolution”
That can be a genuine configuration problem, but first establish whether the game passes the EA AntiCheat stage. If it does not, graphics tweaks are addressing the wrong layer.

Is FIFA 23 Steam Deck Verified?
No. It is currently listed as Unsupported on Steam Deck and SteamOS because of anti-cheat or multiplayer-service compatibility. The current metadata is at SteamDB.
Can Proton GE fix FIFA 23?
It may change symptoms in an unofficial setup, but no Proton build is an authoritative fix for the documented EA AntiCheat incompatibility. Do not promise online functionality.

Can I play FIFA 23 online on SteamOS?
There is no reliable official SteamOS path established for normal online play. Anti-cheat workarounds that launch part of the game should not be treated as support for online modes.
Does the EA App work on Steam Deck?
The launcher may open under some Proton configurations, but that does not make FIFA 23 or EA AntiCheat supported. Treat launcher success and game compatibility as separate questions.
Will reinstalling fix the crash?
It can repair corrupted files, so verify integrity first. Reinstalling cannot remove the platform-level anti-cheat limitation.
Is Windows better than SteamOS for FIFA 23?
For local FIFA 23 play, Windows is the more credible route because the game’s stated Steam requirements target Windows PCs. Windows still brings driver, storage, battery, suspend, and licensing trade-offs.
Can I stream FIFA 23 to the Deck?
Yes, from a capable Windows PC using Steam Remote Play. The PC runs FIFA 23 while the Deck acts as the streaming client.

Do not assume that another EA football game has the same Deck status. Check each title’s current Steam compatibility and anti-cheat requirements separately.
