A Halo Infinite black screen can mean several different failures: Windows may have lost its display output, Halo may be rendering without showing video, a Steam sign-in panel may be blank, or a specific multiplayer session may have a documented bug. Identify the symptom first, then use the matching fix below. Do not reinstall the game until platform repair, authentication, and driver checks have failed.
Quick diagnosis:
- Entire Windows display or “No signal”: use the Windows graphics reset and check the monitor, cable, GPU, and driver.
- Only Halo is black but the desktop works: fully close the game, update it, then verify or repair its files.
- Black login rectangle, especially on Steam: clear Steam browser data or remove the matching Xbox credential.
- Black screen only in Custom Game Browser: restart and test another mode; Halo Support lists this as a known issue.
- Black screen followed by a crash: prioritize file repair, driver checks, and compatibility troubleshooting.
First, determine what is actually black
The distinction changes the fix. If Windows itself is blank, Halo is only one possible cause. If the desktop remains usable while Halo is black, focus on the game, launcher, authentication, rendering, and overlays. Continued music does not prove that video rendering or the sign-in interface is working.
When the entire Windows display is blank
- Press
Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Microsoft says this resets the graphics driver; the display may flicker or beep. See Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance. - If the desktop returns, save your work, close Halo, restart Windows, and install the current driver from your GPU manufacturer.
- Test another game and check the monitor input and cable if the display reports “No signal.” A system-wide failure is not normally fixed by reinstalling Halo.
When Halo is black but Windows works
Continue with the game and launcher steps below. Note whether you still hear audio, whether the black image is a sign-in panel or loading screen, and whether the problem began after a patch, driver update, Alt+Tab, or monitor change.
Use the low-risk fixes first
Fully quit and relaunch
Do not rely on minimizing Halo, suspending it, or Xbox Quick Resume.

- PC: press
Ctrl + Shift + Esc, end the Halo Infinite process in Task Manager, and close an unresponsive Steam or Xbox app. Restart Windows before testing again. - Xbox: highlight Halo Infinite, press the Menu button, choose Quit, then relaunch. Restart the console if the screen remains black.
Halo Support recommends a full close and relaunch for blank sign-in and profile-error conditions (Fall Update 2025 notes). A full restart also refreshes suspended account and purchase state (support guidance).
Update Halo and its launcher
- Microsoft Store: open Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates.
- Xbox app: open Library → Manage installs, then update Halo Infinite.
- Steam: open Library, right-click Halo Infinite, and install any available update.
- Xbox console: open My games & apps → Manage updates → Updates.
These paths are documented by Halo Support (update instructions). Restart Windows or the console after a major game, operating-system, launcher, or driver update.
Repair Halo’s files before reinstalling
Repair is the most useful next step when the black screen comes with freezing, startup crashes, or file-corruption symptoms. It will not fix an account problem, unsupported hardware, a driver regression, or a server-side rendering defect.

Steam: verify local files
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Halo Infinite → Properties.
- Open Installed Files (older Steam versions may say Local Files).
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for completion.
- Restart Windows and launch Halo from the Steam library.

Xbox app on PC: Verify and Repair
- Open the Xbox app and select Halo Infinite.
- Choose More actions for Halo Infinite → Manage.
- Open Files and select Verify and Repair.
- Relaunch after the process finishes.
Microsoft Store: repair the app
- Search Windows for Installed apps or Apps & Features.
- Select Halo Infinite, open Advanced options, and choose Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
If Store repair fails, Halo Support’s documented next step is uninstalling and reinstalling that version (official procedure).

A black rectangle or blank Microsoft/Xbox login panel with Halo visible behind it is a Steam-specific failure documented by Halo Support. The Xbox app and Microsoft Store versions are not affected by this particular sign-in-window issue.
Clear Steam’s embedded browser data
- Open Steam and select Steam → Settings.
- Open Web Browser, if that section exists in your Steam build.
- Choose Delete Web Browser Cache, confirm, then choose Delete All Browser Cookies and confirm.
- Relaunch Halo Infinite and sign in again.
Steam’s labels can change; the important action is clearing its embedded browser cache and cookies.

Remove the matching Xbox credential
- Search Windows for Credential Manager and open Windows Credentials.
- Expand Generic Credentials.
- Remove only entries containing
Xbl|2043073184. - Relaunch Halo and sign in when prompted.
This can sign you out of most or all Xbox-network services on that PC. Do not delete unrelated credentials. Source: Halo Support’s Steam sign-in troubleshooting.
Update and test the graphics driver
Driver troubleshooting is especially relevant when the issue started after a Windows or driver update, appears during resolution changes or shader loading, affects other DirectX 12 games, or recovers after Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B.

- Download the driver from Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA—not from a driver-updater site.
- Install it normally, restart Windows, and test Halo before re-enabling overlays or tuning utilities.
Halo’s October 7, 2025 Fall Update notes describe an incompatibility fix for some integrated Intel graphics systems and direct affected users to obtain the latest driver from Intel (patch notes). This does not mean every black screen is fixed by the newest driver. If symptoms began immediately after a driver update, a rollback is a system-specific fallback, not a universal Halo remedy.

Remove common PC conflicts
Disable overlays temporarily
For one diagnostic launch, turn off Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, Discord overlay, GPU recording and performance overlays, FPS counters, screen-capture tools, RGB or hardware-monitoring injectors, and overclocking or undervolting utilities. Re-enable them one at a time after the game works.
Test one monitor and avoid focus changes
- Disconnect secondary monitors temporarily.
- Start Halo on the primary display and avoid Alt+Tab while it loads.
- If the menu appears, test borderless or windowed mode before returning to exclusive fullscreen.
- Restart Halo after changing display settings.
Halo Support documents a multiple-monitor, Alt+Tab, and Xbox Game Bar focus issue; its workaround is to close and relaunch, then restart the PC if necessary (known issues).
Check antivirus without leaving protection disabled
Halo Support specifically documents Comodo Antivirus blocking Microsoft Store and Xbox app installations. Add Halo Infinite to Comodo’s excluded applications for a controlled test, then keep protection enabled and use the narrowest exclusion possible. Do not permanently disable antivirus software.

Consider AMD-specific symptoms
The known-issues page notes that older AMD drivers can cause poor performance and that Radeon Anti-Lag can produce hitches on some systems. If hitches accompany the black screen, test with Anti-Lag disabled and use a current or known-stable AMD driver.
Check hardware and display compatibility
- Install current Windows updates and confirm Halo is using the intended discrete GPU on a laptop.
- Remove overclocks while troubleshooting and check for overheating or unstable GPU power.
- If the monitor loses signal outside Halo, test another cable, input, monitor, and game.
- Use Halo Support’s current PC hardware and driver resources rather than relying on an old minimum-specification list: Halo Infinite support hub.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S steps
- Quit Halo instead of relying on Quick Resume.
- Restart the console.
- Check My games & apps → Manage updates → Updates and install available game and console updates.
- Test Halo without Quick Resume.
- If only one mode or custom session is black, record the mode, map, and reproduction steps.
- If the whole TV loses signal, test the HDMI cable, TV input, and another game before treating it as a Halo defect.
PC-only procedures such as Steam verification, Credential Manager cleanup, and the Windows graphics shortcut do not apply to Xbox consoles.
Recognize documented in-game issues
Custom Game Browser black screen
Halo Support lists sessions that load into a black screen or stationary map view with most of the HUD missing as a Custom Game Browser issue. Exit the session, fully restart Halo, test another mode or map, check the current Known Issues page, and report a reproducible case. Local file repair or a driver reinstall may not correct a server or session-rendering problem.
Easy Anti-Cheat is missing
If launch fails because Easy Anti-Cheat is absent, Steam users should verify files. Microsoft Store and Xbox app users may need to uninstall and reinstall Halo to retrigger EAC installation, according to the same known-issues guidance.

Reinstall only after verification or repair and sign-in troubleshooting. It is reasonable when repair repeatedly finds damaged files, EAC remains missing, Store repair fails, or installation was interrupted during an update. Reinstall through the same launcher first; switching platforms introduces separate account, entitlement, and installation variables.
- Confirm which account owns any campaign entitlement.
- Record your platform and installation location.
- Uninstall, restart Windows, and reinstall from the same launcher.
- Test before adding overlays, tuning tools, or custom security exclusions.
If the black screen remains
Submit a ticket through the Halo Support hub and include:
Quick Recap
- Platform: Steam, Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S.
- Windows version and build, GPU model, and driver version for PC.
- Whether audio continues and whether the desktop remains responsive.
- When it began and whether it followed a patch, Windows update, driver update, or launcher change.
- Whether repair or verification found damaged files.
- Affected mode: campaign, multiplayer, Forge, Custom Game Browser, or every mode.
- Whether multiple monitors, Alt+Tab, overlays, antivirus, or a sign-in prompt are involved.
- Screenshots, video, crash information, or a Windows problem report when available.
