A $499.99 bundle added a digital download code for Mario Kart World. The base console came with its controllers, dock and cables, but no game.
Launch date and U.S. prices
The Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, in Japan, North America, Europe, Australia and parts of Asia. Nintendo’s U.S. launch MSRPs were $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for the console bundled with a digital copy of Mario Kart World. Those are launch MSRPs, not a promise of today’s retail price; tax, shipping, retailer offers and later price changes can affect checkout totals. Nintendo’s U.S. launch announcement and its April 2025 release give the launch details.

Prices varied by region. For Japan, Nintendo listed a Japanese-language system at ¥49,980 and a Mario Kart World set at ¥53,980; a separate multi-language system was ¥69,980. The U.S. dollar prices should not be treated as global pricing.
What came in the $449.99 box?
Nintendo listed these items in the standard package:
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Nintendo Switch 2 console
- Left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers
- Joy-Con 2 Grip and Joy-Con 2 straps
- Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
- Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable
- Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter
- USB-C charging cable
The base system did not include Mario Kart World or another game. That game was included as a digital download code only in the separate $499.99 bundle.
What changed from the original Switch?
Display and design
Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920×1080 handheld resolution, HDR10 support and variable refresh rates up to 120Hz. It is larger than the original Switch, with an adjustable rear stand and a USB-C port on the top of the console in addition to the lower port.
Performance and TV output
A custom NVIDIA processor provides faster CPU and GPU performance than the original Switch, enabling improved loading and more visually advanced games. In docked mode, Nintendo lists output up to 4K at 60fps, or up to 120fps at 1080p or 1440p when both the game and display support those modes. These are supported output ceilings, not a guarantee that every game renders at 4K or reaches 120fps. Nintendo’s technical specifications describe the display and output modes.
Storage
The system has 256GB of internal storage, with some capacity reserved for system use. That is eight times the original Switch’s stated storage. For ordinary game-storage expansion, Switch 2 requires microSD Express cards. Conventional microSD cards from an original Switch can be used only to view or transfer compatible screenshots and videos, not as game-storage expansion. Check Nintendo’s compatibility guidance before reusing a card.

- The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
- Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***
Joy-Con 2 and GameChat
Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically and can act as mouse controls in compatible games. The console has a built-in microphone, and the controllers add a C Button for opening GameChat. GameChat supports voice chat for up to 12 people, with screen sharing for up to four participants; a compatible USB-C camera is needed for video chat. Users under 16 need parental or guardian approval through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app.
Nintendo’s launch announcement made GameChat available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership through March 31, 2026. That free-access period has ended; a Nintendo Switch Online membership is now required for GameChat. A camera is sold separately, but voice chat does not require one.
Battery and portability
Nintendo estimates battery life at approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the software and usage. This is an estimate rather than a standardized runtime guarantee; game demands, screen brightness and wireless use can change actual play time. The larger system is also heavier than the original Switch. Nintendo’s published specifications provide the estimate.
What games were available at launch?
Nintendo said more than 20 titles were available on launch day. That count covered different kinds of releases, not just new Switch 2 exclusives.

A Switch 2 Edition is an enhanced release, while some older games receive free updates and others remain playable through compatibility without an upgrade. Enhanced features may require a paid upgrade; there is no universal free-upgrade policy. Nintendo’s launch announcement and launch-day games announcement distinguish the titles highlighted at release.

Switch 2 plays many physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is not universal. Some titles are unsupported or only partially compatible, and some receive updates or paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades. Check Nintendo’s game and accessory compatibility information for a specific title or device before relying on it.
| Original Switch item | What to expect on Switch 2 |
|---|---|
| Joy-Con and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller | Can connect wirelessly, but original Joy-Con cannot attach physically to Switch 2. |
| Original Switch dock and HDMI cable | Not the Switch 2 dock and cable; do not assume they can provide Switch 2 TV-mode setup. |
| Original AC adapter | Can charge the console directly, but does not support Switch 2 TV mode. |
| Conventional microSD card | Not for ordinary Switch 2 game storage; compatible screenshots and videos can be viewed or transferred. |
| Original Joy-Con grip, charging grip and straps | Not interchangeable with Joy-Con 2. |
| Classic controllers and GameCube Controller Adapter | Some are usable; the GameCube Controller Adapter can connect through the Switch 2 dock. Check accessory-specific compatibility. |
Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to an original Switch, and some motion accessories require the original Joy-Con. Owning an original console therefore does not guarantee that its dock, storage card or controller accessories will transfer to the new setup.
Which Switch 2 package makes sense?
| Option | Launch U.S. MSRP | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 base system | $449.99 | Buyers who do not want Mario Kart World or already own it separately. |
| Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle | $499.99 | Buyers who want the game; it includes a digital download code. |
The bundle’s launch premium over the base system was $50. It is the more natural choice if you wanted Mario Kart World anyway; otherwise, the base system avoids paying for a game you may not use. These launch figures do not establish current retail prices.

Costs and policies to factor in
- Storage: Digital libraries may call for a microSD Express card; do not buy a conventional microSD card expecting it to store Switch 2 games.
- GameChat: A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required after the free-access period ended March 31, 2026. The console microphone supports voice chat; video requires a compatible USB-C camera sold separately.
- Upgrades: Some Switch 2 Edition enhancements cost extra, while some games receive free updates. Check the terms for each game rather than assuming either outcome.
- Digital game prices: Nintendo says that, beginning with preorders for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book in May 2026, certain new Nintendo-published Switch 2 digital exclusives can have a different MSRP from their physical editions. Prices vary by title; see Nintendo’s pricing explanation and check each product page.
Who should upgrade—and who can keep an original Switch?
Switch 2 is a stronger fit if
- You want Switch 2-exclusive games or better performance and a larger handheld display.
- You have a digital or physical Switch library and want to keep using compatible titles.
- You want the hybrid handheld-and-TV format but found the original hardware limiting.
- You are interested in features such as GameShare or GameChat and are prepared for any subscription or camera costs that apply.
Keeping the original Switch is reasonable if
- You are satisfied with its library and do not need Switch 2-exclusive software.
- You mainly play games that receive no meaningful Switch 2 enhancement.
- You want to avoid replacing accessories or buying microSD Express storage.
- The launch MSRP is too high for a console without a game, or Nintendo’s battery estimate is a concern for handheld play.
Nintendo later reported more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold worldwide in the first four days, calling it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system ever. That is Nintendo’s own sales claim, announced June 10, 2025—not an independently audited figure. Nintendo’s announcement provides its wording and timeframe.
